Stuff featured from my personal collection

Newbies

I normally describe the gloves below in chronological order, but the two Stall and Dean newbies are absolutely huge pickups in terms of what I really like. In the early days I sort of latched onto Stall & Deans as a sub-collection because I liked the name, not too many people focused on them, and the ones I ran across always seemed to be of top quality. I also liked the Speed slogan though have no idea what it has to do with catching a ball. Anyway, I thought I was pretty much done building that subset because I had several nice examples and was hesitant to spend a ton for the top names, and then -- wham -- I lucked into winning the Woodie English. Its pictures looked nice, but I was floored how much nicer and larger it was in person, and then it cleaned to this great color. Stunner!

The English alone was enough to motivate me to update this page but then out of the blue was an offer of a Stall & Dean Speed Lutzke-style 3-finger. I had always joked around that this was sort of my holy grail glove because it combined so many of my favorite elements into one glove but didn't really think any were out there. It's a fluke that it also has a smooth lining and cloth label ... Stunner!

I know, another crescent catchers mitt. I want from them being a strong need to pretty much filling the need entirely (does anyone ever really knock an item completely off the list?). This one is one of my favorites because of its zany look. Now if I could only pick up a crescent basemitt that I liked as much. Anyone want to tempt me with one I can't live without? I'm a trading machine when properly motivated.

I've always really liked the D&M G41 1" web Ruth as one of the all-time classics, but the Reach Homerun Special full web has a certain class as well. It wasn't really intentional at first, but I've slowly but steadily picked up some pretty unique Ruth models. Dang collecting bug.

Here's a Rawlings 1" web to go along with last time's full web. Check out the cloth label and stamping.

I think Ken-Wel threw out all the stops on this Terry Moore ... Vance-style lacing, corset type wrist lacing, cloth label, contrasting black piping and webs, brown lining, etc. I can't decide if all the features on one glove are beautiful or ugly.

The Wilson 563XST basemitt is just a great model. This one has hardly been used and is a WWII navy issue "USN" model. Speaking of basemitts, check out the trapper web on the Nokona trapper. It's sort of a cross between a trapper and a trapeze. Nokona called it a semi-trap ... I call it cool.

Speaking of Woodies, I actually found the Sonnett Woodie at an antique flea market (and I just don't find much anymore). It needed a little lace work and a little cleaning but it sure is a great quality model. The V in the model number stands for V-Break, whatever that is. Check out how large the endorsment is ... I'm surprised it's not a John Hancock model. Trade talks Brett?

Yes, they pulled me back in. Check out Rawlings Stargell and Spalding Bando gloves closely before reading on. Really. OK, Mr. Lazy, I'll just tell you that they are uniquely identical except for the brand and stamping. Of course, they call the identical webs different marketing names ("Split Trap" versus "Split Action ") as with the pockets ("Deep Well Pocket" versus "Form Pocket") but only Spalding chose tp play up the "e-z-flex." At least they put the endorsements in different places. If I told you I liked the Rawlings better you'd think I was a little biased.
