Circle Mining District
Alaska gold mining had many Rushes, but one of the biggest and best was Circle Mining District and Butte, Bananza & Miller Creeks were among the best. You can pan, sluice, highbank or dredge @ an actual gold rush site. You can dredge virgin ground or dredge breakup deposited gold. You can still see the dugout log cabins from the first prospectors built in 1898. You can take trips to Central Mining Museum & to Arctic Hot Springs. Butte Creek Alaska Gold offers a unique experience hosted by Ken & Gene Bunkley. We are dedicated to keeping the tradition and history of gold mining alive. Anyone who wants to pan, dredge or prospect for gold is encouraged to call. We enjoy talking but not teaching prospecting, if you are coming you should know how to work the equipment you bring. We will be glad to help and make suggestions on equipment all winter, our summers are dedicated to harvesting gold or providing for the one's that fly up.
The Birch Creek Wild and Scenic Rivers Canoe trail (120 mile float) is located just to the west of Butte Creek and flows to north of Central past our claims on two sides.
Our Gold season starts as soon @ breakup occurs (May through June) and we try to keep dredging as long as the weather allows 'til freeze usually around mid September. You will find that more gold is found later in the season than @ beginning, maybe it is that we know more, or hunt longer.
