The 550 Magnum
The .550 Magnum was designed to fill the gap between the 470 Capstick and the 600 OK (Overkill). The intended purpose of the design was to produce one of the finest stopping rifle cartridges available for professional guides and hunters. In order to accomplish this a good supply of bolt actions and cartridge cases was the first area to overcome. As a result a CZ 550 magnum action or simular action was chosen. The cartridge case for this cartridge is a 3.000" 378 Weatherby cylindrical which Dieter Horneber is producing. The 378 Weatherby cylindrical was picked to avoid supply and feeding problems common to other large big bore cartridges. Next the bullet diameter of .550" was chosen to fill the gap between the .510" cartridges which has good penetration and the .585" cartridges which has tremendous muzzle energy. It was also designed to match .600 Nitro Express energy with the penetration common to .510 cartridges. The desired load is a 700gr bullet at 2300 fps with 8222 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. Comparing load data from the 500 A-square loads of 2,400-2,500 fps with a 700gr bullet maybe possible.
The end result is a very simple and powerful cartridge with the potential for good penetration and bone crushing energy while being able to feed through several bolt actions to base a rifle on.
I have completed the paperwork with the ATF and the 550 Magnum that I designed and submitted is classified as a sporting ammunition. A copy of the letter can be obtained by contacting me through email. goldcoins1@aol.com
The 550 Magnum protype rifle was completed after receiving ATF approval. I am now beginning load development for the 550 Magnum cartridge. Test loads have been worked up to a 700 grain bullet at 2375 FPS which gives 8750 FT/LBS of muzzle energy.
Custombrassandbullets.com has all available reloading components for the 550 Magnum and will be up and running soon.
Thanks,
Neal Shirley

*Bullets*
I am currently working with Alaska bullets to produce bullets.
John Bridger at Bridger Bullets is producing a 600gr and a 700gr solid bronze bullet and is working on a 800gr solid copper semi-expanding bullet. Bridger is also looking into producing gas checks for cast bullets.
600gr $41.20 (25)
700gr $49.75 (25)
Dave Davidson from C&H Tool and Die will produce 700gr solids for the 550.
Approx $75.00 (50)
At the shot show I talked to the makers of the GPA bullets and they are considering making bullets for the 550. This is the response.
Hello Neal,
As promised, I contact you again. I met the GPA manufacturer yesterday.
He is able to create a new caliber. He needs more information about the diagram of the bullet, cartridge design for the crimping groove and the application (hunting or shooting). He wants the "american data" like CIP Datas in europe.
To begin the work on the caliber, they need about US 800$ for tools. He advices to choose an average weight to reduce the costs. After tests, you will decide to increase or decrease the weight.
Best regards,

Quality Cartridge
I have exchanged emails with Bruce Bertram about producing properly headstamped brass and it will only require a case drawing and the headstamp.
I have also talked to Jamison International about producing brass and they can produce brass once they have a case drawing and the headstamp.
Jim Bell of Mast/Bell brass has also agreed to produce the cases.
*Loaded Ammunition*
Pete Cardona from Quality Cartridge will be offering loaded ammunition for the 550 Magnum along with a large selection of other wildcat loaded ammunition.
*Reloading Dies*
Dave Davison at C&H Tool and Die will be offering reloading dies for the 550 Magnum. The standard 3 die set will need a .510" and a .550" tapered expander to complete the reloading die set to expand 460 Weatherby brass and reload various lengths of available brass from 2.850" through 3.000"
The .550 Magnum was designed to use a 3" Weatherby cylindrical case and a 700 gr bullet from Hawk which gives us a 3.810" and an 800 gr bullet which gives us a 3.830" OAL cartridge. Using Bell Weatherby cylindrical which is 2.920" long and a 700 gr bullet gives us a 3.730" and a 800 gr bullet gives us a 3.750" OAL cartridge.
Resizing .460 Weatherby gives 2.870" long case which should only be used if 3" Weatherby cylindrical or 2.920" Bell Weatherby cylindrical is not available.
Which means that the reamer should cut the chamber to 3.050. The reloading dies are designed to be able to seat a bullet in the shortest case 2.850" and when using the longer cases the seating die will have to be backed out to accommodate the added length.
The 55-100 Maynard is the parent bore combined with the 460 Weatherby case to produce the 550 Magnum.
56-56 Spencer approx .550" (not in production)
55-100 Maynard (not in production)
550 Ivory Express designed in 1995 (no information)
550 magnum designed in 2003 (current)
550 Hubel Express designed in 2003 (single shot)
538/600 nitro designed in 2003 (German wildcat which uses a .552" diameter bullet)
*Reamers*
Dave Manson of Manson reamers has the original print for the 550 Magnum reamer and has provided the print to Dave Davidson of C&H Tool and die to produce the reloading dies.
*Ballistic Programs*
Ed Reynolds of Aement has included the 550 Magnum case in Acuload III data base. This will allow development of loads for the 550 Magnum
*Cast Bullets*
Wayne Doudna at Custom Cast bullets has contacted NEI Tools for a mould so he can produce a 715gr plain base bullet for the 550 Magnum. These bullets are capable of 2000 fps.
500 bullets for $100.00 ($0.20 ea)
*Cast Bullet moulds* (Pat)
Lee precision will produce single cavity mould for $120.00 and will modify the 50-70 design for a .550" 700gr and the sizing die will cost $25.00. These are a custom order.
*Case Trimmers*
Dave Davidson from C&H Tool and Die will produce file trim dies.
