Gibson Linkes

Descendants of Gibson Meredith Linkes

Generation No. 1

1. Gibson Meredith2 Linkes (John Barnett (Barney)1 Linkus) was born October 1851 in Grainger Co, Tennessee, and died March 21, 1925 in Elizabethton, Tennessee, buried at Stanbury Cemetery. He married Julia Ann Hicks June 25, 1874 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, daughter of Hiram Hicks and Jennie Tester/Teaster.

Notes for Gibson Meredith Linkes:

Sometime after Gibson's Mom died, his Dad took him out to a piece of land and told him to clear the trees off of it. He gave him an ax and Gibson watched his dad walk away over a hill, as soon as his dad`s big hat disappeared behind the hill, Gibson struck the ax into a stump and headed off in the opposite direction (most likely toward Rogersville), he was only 12 years old. He had two first cousins living in Rogersville. Their names were Daniel and Henry Housewright. Gibson lived in the same area as they did, District # 7. (This according to the Hawkins Co., Tennessee Minute Book 5, page 140: Gibson owed back taxes on land in District 7 for $1.50. On October 8, 1878, these taxes were paid in full.) Gibson worked as a foreman over slaves for a wealthy family named Phelps or Phelephs.

In the 1910 Census Gibson is living in Johnson County, Tenn, with Minnie and Julia. He lists himself as a Farmer and he lists that he can read and write. Julia and Minnie are both listed in the household and as being able to read and write.

Notes for Emily Linkes:

This information is from "Carter County and Its People" article by Ireland Johnson, granddaughter of John Hiram and Sarah Jane Linkes. I have not been able to verify this. In 1999 Mary Linkes Hendricks recalled that Emily married a Cordell and did not believe that Emily ever had children. This was also confirmed by John Spencer Linkes who in 1993 interviewed Vada Hicks Paralee, daughter of Virgie and Adam Hicks.

She is known as Virginia Links in the book "The Hicks Family of Western North Carolina." Virgie was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church. She is buried at Knoll Kreg Memorial Cemetery in Abingdon, Virginia.
