We are the second dock south of the Hempstead Harbor breakwater. At the end of the remaining floats there is 0' at low water, 7'+ at high. aprox. 20' in mooring area. Watch for rocks south and north of our dock. They are not visible at mid to high tide.

Via Horse and Buggy or Bicycle:
Exit 49 North (Glen Cove Road) from Long Island Expressway (Please obey all road signs). Follow signs to Morgan Park or Garvies Point Nature Preserve. We are located at the foot of McLaughlin St. On the waterfront in the gray wood building.

"Get off the information highway and follow the dirt road through the woods to the dock by the natural spring" The spring was rebuilt recently by the Pioneers.

Club History

Formed in 1966 when the county took over all the local waterfront property of the old Appleby and I. Patrick estates and grounds. In 2003 the last remaining Appleby visited the club.

The Garvies Point Boating Association Inc. is a not for profit organization to preserve the right of boat owners to use the Federal Mooring area South of the Glen Cove Breakwater.

Some folks say that Captain Kidd burried his treasure in the area before the Queen's Royal Navy caught up with him. The bootie has not been found as of this date.

One chapter from the book "The Gold Coast" by N. DeMille took place on the beach in front of the club. A lawyer and his wife made love there...happens all the time. Someone should complain to the bar association! Incidently smoking and drinking on the preserve is prohibited.

We have a great view of the famous hill and hairpin turn that Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) nearly rolled off of while unwilling driving intoxicated in a Mercedes convertible in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock movie thriller "North by Northwest". The actual police station and court location used in the film are still in town about a block north of Wendy's and south of the Ferrari dealership.

In the rock area at very low water we can see the rusted remains of a boiler from an old ship. It is rumored to be from J.P. Morgan's Corsair that sunk in the area before WWII.

The famous Station 10 of the NYYC was at one time several hundred feet north of our club location. The building was moved away on a barge in the summer of 1949. It was on display at Mystic Seaport Museum but in 2000 it was moved to the Newport Rhode Island location of the New York Yacht Club.

Because of the natural clay and natural springs it is possible Stone Age inhabitants lived on the clubs site ...a long time ago. Locals claim some of rocks were actually sculptures. An undated ruin of a stone arena surrounds the natural spring. Some decendants of Stone Age people are still in the club.

Several miles Northwest of the club is Execution Rock Light of American Revolution fame. The flashing beacon is visible from our dock.

From our mooring area the Rye, NY, weekly fireworks displays are visible.

A Canadian Submarine Anchored for the night just north of the Breakwater in 1997. Local papers reported that the crew heard that Glen Cove pizza was world caliber.

Several "Tall Ship" gatherings have taken place in the harbor including "Bounty" "HMS Rose" "Clearwater" and varous foreign craft.

1999 a visit to our harbor by La Moore County a 522' U.S. Navel Vessel, in 2000 an Oliver Hazzard Perry Class frigate was hosted in Hempstead Harbor.

The famous Around Long Island Regatta (late July) finishes at the end of the breakwater 500 yards from our dock.

The oldest boats in our club are wood Herrishoff "S-Boats" It retired from our fleet in 2006. The S-Boat Association races weekends out of Larchmont on the north side of the Sound.

In our fleet we have a number of boats designed by the late Carl Alberg of Marblehead Ma.

The largest boat in our fleet was a classic wood Alden 54' but the average boat is 24' - 36'

The real treasure is the golden sunsets on a perfectly situated harbor in the Western Sound with plenty of open space and excellent storm protection by the northern breakwater and the eastern hills of Glen Cove.

Electricity was officially installed in the club in 1998

Sailing and boating. Our members daysail, cruise, race, teach, raftup, birdwatch and fish in the area.

Friday night Pre-Memorial Day gathering

June Pirates of Garvies party. Designed specifically for "Chowder heads"

Forth of July spectacular fireworks display and Tall ship Festival in the Harbor may be sponsored by the City of Glen Cove. Bring loud horns and noise makers. Display the flag. Please do not chase our good British friends out of the harbor. Remember that war was over two hundred years ago.

Mid August (Aprox. weekend of 17th-23rd) 3rd Annual Waterstock Music and Art Festival and Party. Bring your musical instruments and sketch pad/watercolours.

In the later part of the overheated month of September George and friends have a "Fish Kill Party" It is a real stinker. Bring your antique car, bicycle, boat or motorcycle.

Late October Early November the floats and ramp come out for the winter (Decommissioning). Due to lack of manpower floats will remain in place for the winter season sailors.

Enjoying the one of the last little bits of nature in the New York Metropolitian area.

Please obey all the park rules. They are there for a reason. Especially the:

1. No swimming (that means no scuba also). We don't have any phones in the area to call for help if we need it and besides we can't afford lifeguards. See the movie "CHUD"

2. No dogs. The park preserve is designed for wildlife. Dogs as much as we like them have a tendency to chase the coons, red fox, birds and lapin (rabbits) away. Also dog walkers tend to think the Glen Cove area is a suburb of Paris without pooper scooper laws! Unfortunatly dogs easily pick up ticks and bring them into the preserve and also bring them out of the preserve. Yes there have been cases of Lyme disease reported in the area. Recently a hardcore dog walker complained to me that she somehow aquired poisen ivy. I replied "Could you have possibly petted your fido after a walk in the woods?" Think about it the woods are covered with the stuff and dogs and cats are immune to poisen ivy....only people get it. There is a ton of it near the boat racks and and the parking area so be careful. Even if you contact a dead vine in the winter you can contract it. You can tell it is poisen ivy if you see a vine with sort of a hairy red fur in it.

3. Take the trash out of the park and leave the other stuff (rocks, clay and treasure) there please.

4. Don't mess with the bears, wildlife or boats.

5. The Dinghy rack and dock is not a jungle gym. Please keep off. Keep the bows of the boats behind the frame so we can cut the grass.

6. Unless you are going or coming from a boat stay off the dock. Make sure your kids have life jackets while on the dock.

7. Please do not write on the walls or carve in the trees.

Maintaining the waterfront. We are a "Working Yacht Club" meaning we do all the maintenance on the club, grounds, building, ramp, dinghy racks and floats ourselves. We have no launch service and we try to keep things simple. It is a place in the woods to keep our boats! Just sail a little north of the breakwater and there is a distant view of New York City and New Yorkers.

Why not visit and possibly crew on a boat or at least help Whitey mow our lawn! Whitey kicked the bucket a few years ago. He was a retired Merchant Mariner. He was a great person and when he was alive he said when asked why he was taking care of the place, "I worked all my life on the sea, I owe the shore line a little bit and that is why I trim the bushes and pick up the trash"
