Although I have said it many times before, this information is worth repeating: The real work of an author begins after the ebook/book is published: Especially if you are using an e-publisher!
The reason why e-authors have to work extra hard in promoting their e-books is that many e-publishers are not equipped to list e-books on major online bookstores. The primary exposure an e-author receives from most e-publishers is inclusion of the e-book on the e-publishers' site. Quite frankly, this exposure just does not cut it...especially if you want to have great sales!
Think about how many times you have actually browsed through the vast listings of books listed on an e-publisher's or traditional publishers' site. Reality is, most of us purchase e-books/books while searching under an authors' name! Perhaps you read a previous book from an author that really conveyed great information. Perhaps a friend recommended a particular book after reading it. We rarely purchase a book at random;especially if it is buried amidst hundreds of other books.
This situation is one that often occurs when e-publishing with a e-publisher. Just recently, I released my first e-book. I had carefully chosen my e-publisher; I knew they had earned a great reputation on the WWW. Their royalty structure was also exceptional. Finally, what attracted me the most was the fact that the e-publisher
published a weekly newsletter that listed new releases: The e-newsletter had in excess of 40,000 subscribers! My immediate thought was that my e-book would receive great exposure; especially since my e-book caters to Internet writers.
I anxiously waited for the next issue of the e-newsletter after my e-book release. When I finally received the newsletter, I eagerly searched for mention of my e-book; I never found it...
It turns out that in order to have my e-book mentioned in the e-newsletter, it must first be purchased! But--relying on the thought that my e-book would get listed on the e-newsletter was supposed to deliver the primary exposure I thought I was going to receive from the e-publisher! Do you see the catch-22 syndrome at work??
Thus, a e-book author must become a glorified salesperson. You must prepare yourseslf to run a massive promotional campaign if you wish to have sales. Do not rely on receiving much exposure from your e-publisher.
