B O O K & M A G A Z I N E I L L U S T R A T I O N SEvery illustrator lives for the opportunity to do a book cover or a glossy magazine illustration. Over the years I have had some great assignments and whether the money was good or not, these projects allow you to use all your creative juices. One of my favorite jobs was a cover for the book Blue Tree by Bill Freckleton; a mystical novel which takes place in Vietnam and draws on some of Bill's personal experiences. Since I was working at TopGun at the time of the assignment, I was already in that fighter combat mode. Throw in a little sex appeal and viola. Around that time I was working with another fighter pilot, Robert "Mouse" Shaw. He may be small but he knows his ACM. And he liked my work enough to have me illustrate his book Fighter Combat and his contribution to The Smithsonian Book of Flight. Of course, I do non-military illustration too; such as, the over-the-top cartoon cubism for Danny Campbell's academic tome on revenge in literature. The fifty plus drawings I did for Jim Simpson taught me all I need to know about golf etiquette. ComputorEdge is a regular client with always interesting computer related subject matter (check out the Xbox adventure game board illustration). Fine art and illustration come together in a series of sixty acrylic paintings I produced for my own publication, Our John Muir Trail 2000 which I published online free to all those interested in wilderness backpacking.
