DOG COLOR GENETICS ARE INTRIGUING BUT COMPLICATED, AND WILL NOT BE ADDRESSED HERE. THIS IS A PHOTO GUIDE TO HELP YOU IDENTIFY THE AMAZING VARIETY OF COLOR AND PATTERN IN THE RAT TERRIER.
MY COLOR LECTURE
When people call and ask for a particular color puppy without mentioning HEALTH , TEMPERAMENT AND STRUCTURE, it scares the BEJABBERS out of me and I just can't afford to lose any more bejabbers! These are living, breathing animals, not drapes.  Sheesh!  Color should NEVER be a first priority.

Once you are sure a breeder focuses on HEALTH, TEMPERAMENT and STRUCTURE, THEN ask about color if you like. "Color Breeders" and puppy mills who breed for popular colors with little or no regard for healthy genetics are clever at hiding genetic issues as they sell you that "PRETTY" color. You are their bread and butter and the dog breed deteriorates as unhealthy genes keep pouring into the gene pool. SO ... SO SAD.
12 STEP PROGRAM TO RESPONSIBLE BREEDING
A Responsible Breeder will  ...
1. NEVER, EVER sell to a pet shop or broker where they have no control over where the puppy goes or his quality of life after the sale.
2. Will check buyers for "puppy breath intoxication" and make sure they want a canine companion for the next 15-18 years and are committed to the long haul of raising a puppy through the challenging months ahead.
3. Ask probing questions to determine the buyers suitability for buying a puppy of this breed and be ready to deny a sale or suggest a different, more suitable breed.
4. Suggest you read the Health guarantee BEFORE they accept your deposit. The guarantee reveals a lot about the breeder and should protect the buyers rights in the event of a health problem ... not just the sellers.
5. Have a history of taking dogs out of their breeding program who have demonstrated or thrown health problems even when the dog is a Champion and represents a financial loss to the breeder.
6. Will have at least one of the parents on the premises and allow you ample time to interact with them and see all parts of the dog's living areas. Trust your eyes.
7. Will have happy, healthy looking dogs who interact well with each other, the owner, and you.
8.  Will have nothing to hide, and can show you their well kept records of vaccinations, breedings, and past litters.
9. Will encourage you to finish the vaccinations on your puppy and start heartworm and flea prevention, as well as encourage spay/neuter for dogs not intended for breeding.
10. Will never give you a hard sell, but will be eager to help you find the right puppy for you by giving you referrals to other responsible breeders.
11. Will be actively involved in rescuing dogs of their favored breed and offer you a lifetime service of taking the dog back for rehoming if you are unable to care for them.
12. I'm still thinking...
~ ~ ~ LET'S START WITH  BLACK  ~ ~ ~
This one is easy with it's black nose leather and eye rims. Like all colors blacks may vary slightly wiith warm tones or a dull shade (especially in baby fur) but still be genetically black.

~ ~ ~ NEXT WE GO TO CHOCOLATE ~ ~ ~
Can be light or dark, liver or reddish. Nose leather and eye rim must be chocolate, not black

~ ~ ~ MOVING ON TO  BLUE ~ ~ ~
Appears gray but called BLUE in the animal world. It is a dilute of black. All black hairs and pigment are diluted at a cellular level.   Nose leather and eye rims blue, not black. Blue puppy eyes should become golden or hazel at maturity.

~ ~ INTRIGUING "PEARL" or "ISABELLA" (formerly called BLUE FAWN...see note below) ~ ~
All-over, even color.  Appears silvery mauve at birth and darkens slightly with age. Mauve colored nose. Called many names by other breeds: Isabella, Weimeraner color, mouse-gray, roe-gray, Blue Fawn, Pearl, Fawn, Lilac, Taupe, Cinnamon and Drapp. Most often called "PEARL" in Rat Terriers.

CONFUSION ABOUT BLUE FAWN: When the ARTA Color Guide was created 3 years ago, two different colors were designated as Blue Fawn. Here's why. These colors were still few in numbers and we were unsure of their genetic makeup. Rat Terrier breeders who had them were calling each color Blue Fawn,  so it became the official name for both of them, thinking they were variations of the same genetics. We goofed!  Now that they are much more common and their genetic makeup is known to us we need to give them their own names ... officially. The ARTA Board of Directors is currently reviewing with UKC a revision in the ARTA COLOR GUIDE and BREED STANDARD are in the future.
