WHAT'S IN A NAME?
(BRIEF RAT TERRIER HISTORY)
These little dogs were called "Toy Fox Terriers" by my family and people who owned them. (not to be confused by the small boned 5-7 lb Toy Fox Terrier of today) The term Rat Terrier came about much much later.
They were the
"farm dog"
of the 40's and 50's
and were the chief rodent erradicator of the grains and hay that were stored.
They were also chief playmate for the children of the family and entertainment for the whole family.
Most of your grandparents had one "back on the farm" where they grew up.

TUTTIE was a large white male Rat Terrier who captivated hearts with his mischief
and intelligence. My family swears that TUTTIE could read their minds. Smart enough to be defiant, TUTTIE REFUSED to learn tricks! Every other Rat Terrier they owned was taught to do tricks but each time they coaxed Tuttie to learn tricks his knees would suddenly collapse and his body would turn to JELLO.

Trudy adored us kids and took this responsibility very seriously.

TRUDY and PEPPY had several litters of puppies. (BELOW) You have to look closely for
PEPPY. He is in the far left photo with Eileen and brother Ross. My Uncle Hubert is in
the center picture with brother Ross, who is holding little PEPPY in his left hand.

"Thank you for strolling with us down Memory Lane. We had a few other Rat Terriers that were part of our family but no photos of them...Rats!!
I expect a lot of face licking, and wagging tails when I get to the other side of the Bridge."

How fitting!
I found this photo in my camera after Mom's funeral, taken 10 days before she passed away when we were at a friends home. MOM was holding their Rat Terrier puppy on her lap!

|
|
My mother, Eileen Rosella Ross Chandler, passed away suddenly in her home on Easter Sunday morning, year 2000, after garage sailing with my sister on Saturday and shopping with me on Friday. She was 82.
Mom wanted to see the New Millineum come in and she wanted to get her taxes paid. She did both.
I will miss her terribly, but I realize how fortunate I was to have a MOM like her. Mom showed us how to see humor in most everything. She also showed us how to have courage in passing the same way she showed us how to have courage in life.
