Sundgau History Sundgau Today
My great great grandfather, Louis Gruntz (b. 1825 in Franken), married Catherine Hill and had 5 children, Emilie, Louis Joseph, Laurent, Catherine, & Agnis. Louis' wife, Catherine, and daughter, Agnis, died during childbirth in 1868. Louis then married Anna Hattstatt and had 3 children, Rose, Leon, and Alphonse. In 1873, Louis and Anna emmigrated to New Orleans, LA with Louis Joseph, Emilie, Laurent, Catherine,(children of his first marriage) and Rose and Leon (Alphonse was born in New Orleans). Louis was a blacksmith in Alsace and practiced his trade in New Orleans also. Louis Joseph Gruntz, my great grandfather, married Emma Ohr. OHR FAMILY:My great great great grandfather, John George Ohr, also an Alsation blacksmith, emmigrated to the United States in 1850, with his wife and only son George. John and his wife both died in New Orleans in 1852. In 1853 George met Johanna Wiedman, from Württemburg Germany, and in 1854 they married in New Orleans, LA.; shortly thereafter George and Johanna moved to Biloxi, MS. They had five children, Augustus, Louisa, Mina, George E. Ohr, and my great grandmother, Emma. Emma's brother, George, moved to New Orleans in his early twenties and became a potter. His works are valuable today and he achieved notoriety in his day and today as the Mad Potter of Biloxi. According to family tradition, George and my great grandfather, Louis Joseph Gruntz, roomed at the same boarding house in New Orleans. Both being of Alsatian lineage, they became friends; and, as a result Louis met Emma and the rest is history. ![]() ![]() ![]()
