THE JOHN DEERE STYLED A
On the day of August, 1, 1938 the first styled A John Deere rolled off the line. Which would become a 1939 model tractor. The model A’s looked a great deal better than the unstyled version, if you ask me. The exhaust and air stack were reassigned to the centerline of the hood, with the air stack right directly behind the exhaust stack. An instrument panel was made to hold the oil pressure gauge and temperature gauge. The three-way fuel valve and shutter control was also located in the instrument panel. On latter A’s there was a amp. gauge there too. In the year 1940 at serial number 488000 the engine size was increased. It had an increased displacement of 321.2 cubic inches. This was from the 1/4-inch increase in stroke. The head was improved with a ramped design to increase turbulence within the cylinders. The compression ratio was raised from 3.9:1 to 4.45:1. From the increase in power the A John Deere was fitted with different pistons, rings, and connecting rods.
