A strong romantic/psychological drama that challenges the fuzzy boundaries separating the so-called normal and abnormal and those who are in the position to draw the line. The plot draws an homage to those classic movies that dared to ask the same questions, such as, “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest,” and even, “Frankenstein“. The theme, loving is letting go, ties in well with the aforementioned premise, in suggesting that smothering someone with too much love and protection, as Benny did of June, can hold them back. Although the theme is serious, there is plenty of fresh and witty banter between the characters to steer the tone far away from depressing. Although the story has the feel of an independent vehicle, its commercial aspect lies in the universality of a theme in which the thin line between love and control is challenged.

The plot is filled with plenty of conflict to keep an audience hooked. Benny is constantly dealing with guilt and moral dilemma, as he wrestles with taking care of his mentally ill sister and his desire to have a life of his own. Benny’s month long deadline for a decision of whether to put June in a group home or not, is the introduction of the ticking clock, which effectively heightens the tension. Every plot point introduces more conflict. An especially poignant aspect of conflict is introduced into the story via SAM, who comes into the picture as a Mary Poppins figure. Benny feels his relationship with June is being threatened by Sam who is able to take care of Benny’s sister almost as well as he can. The romantic subplot is established when Benny falls for Ruthie and realizes that he is missing adventure and romance in his life. However, Benny still feels guilty for not focusing all of his attention on June. As the tension culminates into a powerful realization for Benny, the plot comes to a climax and is wrapped up nicely, leaving all ends satisfyingly tied.

The mix of intelligent humor and almost devastating, in your face reality culminates to perfection. Although June is psychologically disturbed, she is portrayed through her discourse as a witty and intelligent character. It is June who has the insight to point out that an illness does not define one’s character. She says to Sam, “Get it through your head. It’s your dyslexia that is stupid, not you.” Thus the dialogue adds another strong aspect to the story.

The main characters are intriguing as they all have internal conflicts which are played out to satisfying conclusions. As a direct effect, each character becomes a three-dimensional personality. Every character has a solid arc, with Benny’s being the strongest. Benny starts out trying to fix June, yet he himself is not fixed. Benny’s internal conflict is the strongest as he goes from living life on auto pilot to realizing that life is passing him by. He feels guilty that June is sick and to compensate for it, he smothers June with love and protection. By realizing that June must live her own life in order to heal and grow stronger, Benny is finally able to free June and in turn, to free himself. In a moment of desperation and realization, Benny tells June, “You can have your own place, your own sickness, your own wellness…I don’t know shit June, that’s right.”

The script is good on so many levels. It is a touching love story that challenges the concept of abnormality with an intelligent comedic streak throughout. As a character driven piece, there is plenty of potential for this story to touch people with its universal theme of loving enough to let go, giving way for the possibility of a commercial success.
