Ever go to buy a pup & the parents were locked up away from vistors? Maybe the parents didn't listen to their owners or were out of control ,aggressive or shy ? Perhaps you were not allowed to pet the pups parents ? Be wary if such was the case, as it could be a cover up for several of following ;poor temperament , lack of training , fear biters , shyness, overly aggressive, unhealthy breeding stock .Whatever the reason given by the owner , if  pups parents are not approachable - red warning lights should be going off in your head to steer clear  .
A puppy buyer should get to see , touch & interact with their pups parents prior to purchasing a  pup . A " hands on approach "shows the buyer what to expect from his pup, by seeing first hand the temperament ,structure & intelligence of the pups parents. This is a important step to  buying a pup, remember a pup is only as good as its parents .You must make sure the pup you buy has parents with  good health ,temperament ,bloodlines & parents who receive good care so you will have a better chance of getting a good healthy well bred pup you can be happy with .
We compiled a few facts & different situations which many of you will come across while pup shopping .We point out things most people over look when searching for a pup . It is our belief that the breeding behind a pup decides how it will look & act when grown. How it is raised before you buy it influences the pup & matters even more. How its parents are in health & temperament matter the most of all .Do yourself a favor visit the links to left " Things to Know "  &  "Helpful links ".You will benefit from the read .

A WORD OF CAUTION BEFORE PURCHASING ANY PUPPY
Newspapers abound with ads for pups, prices range from $50.00 - $500.00 up.Before you go look at pups - learn about German Shepherds .Do not make the mistake to think a cheap will do or take the attitude of a dog is a dog .If you believe that pedigree doesnt matter think again .If all you want is a family pet that has papers & that is all i need -You are mistaken .Papers are birth certificates . AKC papers only mean the owner of the litter ,pup or breeding dog has paid a fee to register the dogs with AKC . AKC does not monitor bloodlines or peoples breeding practices .AKC tells you that AKC papers do not mean QUALITY see here  AKC registration , once there scroll down to paragraph titled AKC REGISTRATION & QUALITY .
People wrongly assume AKC papers equal Quality. You can buy 2 pups from the same litter [brother/sister] breed them& AKC will register the litter .Then you can keep a female pup from the incest breeding , breed it back to its father & AKC will register the litter .This can go on as long as you like. A Pedigree showing titles earned & champions -shows good breeding & Quality.A descent breeder using descent bloodlines is every thing to intergerty of  the breed & worth of the AKC paper !
If you still are lured in by pups at a CHEAP price you will find that most of these type breeders havent much knowledge in German Shepherds , most have untrained dogs , dogs from poor bloodlines ,dogs which are used to breed each heat cycle season after season, never getting a rest from producing pups"poor puppy machines". Most have dogs with no OFA  hip certificate  .You will find dogs used to breed before they are mature[ mature is 2 years] ask to see the mom & dads AKC paper, check date of birth on parents. Many breeding dogs are in questionable enviroments ,dirty conditions , small area, over crowded dogs, cages of wire mesh to walk on ,etc. Most hardly interact with their dogs .
You will run across those that Steal other kennels names & fame to peddle their pups see here . Those that sale pups off the "Family Pet " who at first give impression that they care for their dog & pups they bred but watch their ads ,week after week, their prices fall getting cheaper & cheaper for the pups they created .This puts those pups at risk of going to homes that are questionable & those who will breed them to repeat the ever lasting cycle of inferior bred pups & destruction of the breed of the German Shepherd .Will this type breeder be there for you a year or two later to answer a question  or offer training info  ? Do you think they care at all about the dogs ?
Lets face it ,cheap  items are usually assigned a value of -I can replace it or so what if im behind on shots the dog didnt cost me much .So , what happens to the cheap pup that started out  $350.00 , it often gets sold by a seller in panic that he will get stuck with pups[ he created & claimed he loved  ] for $150.00 to anyone with the money . Sad  thing is these uncaring Sellers do not even care enough to offer  AKC limited registration on  their pups they sold.Within 1 year ,their pups will be getting bred to restart the cycle over again or worse end up in the local pound or mistreated . Its proven poor bloodline means poor health , means poor temperament & it repeats itself in pups .It is our belief that when you pay a descent price for something bred with thought & good lineage you are proud of it and usually take good care of it .If you think a bargain dog is really a bargain see  cost of owning a dog .find out how much a free or cheap dog will cost you in just 1year of owning it .Want a real shocker look at what a cheap dog cost you to own in its life time .
   People who breed using poor specimens purchased cheap, do not care what kind of  pup they create nor who buys their pups nor what happens to those pups .Didnt loose any sleep gambling with the life of the litter of pups as well as their family pet which they "claim" they love, by endangering their dogs life to attempt breeding. Ask yourself the following below before you buy any pup ;
 1. If someone is selling pups cheap, do you believe that they spent the neccassary funds on buying descent breeding stock?  or even keeping the parents & their pups in good condition in vet care , feed , etc .Ask for their vets phone # to check & ask to see a recent vet receipt on litter .
2. Do they care where the pups go , who buys them & what happens to the little ones they created ? where are their letters & pictures from their past puppy buyers ?
3. Can Seller give you several different vet references who back them as well as  letters from past puppy buyers so that you may contact these references  ?
4.Do parents to pups even have OFA  hip certification ?Dont be fooled by Sellers claim that the vet said hips were okay .It cost tops $150 to xray hips at vet .It cost $30 for OFA , so if they paid the vet 150  why wouldnt they pay 30 to OFA for certificatin  paper ?
5.Are the parents of the litter well bred ? Did the breeder offer to show you pictures of the so called fine quality parents & grandparents of your pup ?How about pics of pups they produced from past litters after they are grown so you can see what your pup would look like when grown ? Can you pet parents , are they trained ?
6.What will they do for you if the pup you buy has something wrong with it at  1st vet visit ? Is that in writting ?Is there a written health guarantee that allows you to bring pup to vet  & return it for a refund if something is wrong on the pup at 1st vet check ?
MOST IMPORTANT THING OF ALL  -"The purchase price "of  a pup , is a very small amount compared to how much that pup will cost you in raising it for it's entire life in feed , vet care, training  & love .The pup will be around your family , your children & in your life for a very long time, it is a investment .A pups purchase price is pennies compared to what the dog will cost you in its life time .See Cost of dog .It pays in the long run, to spend a little more purchasing a pup from good lines , rather than dump your $ for years into a poor bred dog -as any dog cost the same to raise -care for in feed , vet , whether its a pound rescue or a well bred one ! Improve your chances of getting a healthy dog by buying a pup whose parents at least have OFA certification & a vet recommendation .
Breeding should be done by people with knowledge of the breed using stock worth breeding ,the best stock they can afford to obtain[ priced higher than $1,000.00 a dog ],so  the chance of  producing a decent pup is far higher compared to using  a inferior  specimen of cheap price .Pups bred from Quality lines have a higher chance of acting & looking  like a German Shepherd should with the added bonus of they come from decent breeding stock, usually schutzhund or champion sire or at least Champion grandparents .Health screening on adult dogs used in any breeding program is very important ! $400 pups are not from Good bred OFA parents.
It's a bad idea to buy a pup from someone who breeds dogs purchased  for $150.00 - $500.00[ pet prices] coupled with not knowing about their stock's back ground ,is foggy about OFA, DNA or knowledge of breed known disorders & has no info on bloodlines or the breed standard. If pups parents are ill bred , not health tested then they are poor speciems & they will produce entire litters of only the same .
Training one's adult dogs used in breeding , shows that you cared enough to put the effort & time into your dogs .Dogs mean more to that owner than a breeding machine. A  trained dog is socialized ,friendly , obedient , has manners ,  it will let visitors handle it with its owner present .These things show that the adult dog is smart ,obedient, has the brains to learn , is of a friendly temperament &has the inclination &  to learn .If you are considering buying a pup from someone  who did not take the time to train the adults they breed from ,chances are very very high that they will not take time to socialize their pups .
The old saying you pay for what you get applies to everything . Of course a good breeder charges a little more for pups .They have a good deal invested in purchasing their breeding stock [ far higher than $ 500.00 a dog ] more invested in  keeping their stock in good health, vet bills, performing health screening OFA/ DNA  ,buying  premium feed as well as tons of hours in training .It takes a good deal of cash to take care of a dog properly .Breeders usually have 5 or 6 or so dogs [ to offer you a better selection ]  -imagine their cost for such a crew .So if you think a descent breeders prices are high keep the above in mind & consider their bloodlines .If their dogs are healthy good dogs & health screened OFA then know the price for their pups is just . Descent breeders know that those who can not afford their prices usually can not afford to take correct care of the dog . So ,for the most part their pups go to good homes , curtailing buyers who may not have funds to care for a dog correctly .Descent breeders  offer a discount on  AKC limited pups [ greedy sellers dont care enough to offer this ] to help stop indiscriminate breeding, over breeding & help the breed over all in the long run - unlike all the others peddling pups .
Buying a puppy from someone who breeds inferior dogs then sales pups at cheap prices - only ensures that the Buyer of such a pup, has just added to poor breeding practices by encouraging that pup seller to create many more pups yet again soon .Such a buyer will find, that their purchase is lacking in more than a few qualities in health & character of the breed along with aiding bad breeders to continue in the destruction of the German Shepherd breed.
