article was wrote to expose 1 of many the scams in the dog world & help educate pup shoppers by showing them what to look for . I have been asked several times to write something on these matters so here it goes .

Every Kennel has a kennel name it goes by , this trade mark logo name is what we breeders are known by .Kennel names are usually part of a breeders reputation & often a kennel's name is known or heard of, long before the actual breeders given christian name is known . Many in German Shepherds recognize the famous kennels of Arminius , Busecker schloss, Kirschental , Tiekerhook ,just to name a few foreign kennels often finding their names hi jacked by others who then use them on dogs not from their breedings .USA kennel names , Valkyre , Steffenhaus , Leerburg ,etc also see their fair share of name stealing .
Reputable breeders , dog judges , and those serious in dogs consider kennels names to belong to 1 kennel /1 owner who coins that name & uses it on all the dogs they breed /show/ trial etc .That trade mark name is stamped on that kennel's dogs .Among Reputable breeders a kennel name is sacred ,more famous a kennel is the more well known its name in the world of dogs yet sadly the more it may be stolen .The famous kennel's above & many others have worked long & hard showing , titling , breeding & earning a reputation with dogs for years .They have earned their respected repuations not for others to steal its fame .Those wanting to build a reputation for quality dogs would NEVER use anothers kennel name .In the dog world , its taboo to steal kennel names & those doing so are frowned upon .

Whats wrong with stealing another kennels name you ask ? When kennel names are used by more than 1 person it becomes confusing for those new to the breed & very misleading to pup buyers who are often told the pups for sale are off this or that famous line when they are not .Pup buyers often do not know how to tell & fall prey to this common scam .They often are charged higher or end up paying for something that really isnt what the sellers claiming.
From a breeders point of view -would you like to spent many years & thousands of dollars buying , raising , breeding , showing dogs and making a name for yourself to have some person take the name you created to use on their kennel or their lesser bred dogs which you did not breed ?

example my kennel name is Von Heisstwessen , it is not famous it is not well known either however it is named by me from a name I made myself in 1992 .I tell those buying a pup of mine they have the right to name the pup they got from me with heisstwessen name if I bred the dog .They should not steal names from the pups ancestors to name their pup . they should not breed that dog then name its pups using my kennel name nor take names from the pedigrees to use .
I own a few imports that are good titled dogs , 1 is Alf Von Silberbach from the kennel Silberbach in Germany . That does not give me the right to use the kennel name Silberbach as my kennel name . It does not give me the right to name a single pup off Alf with the Silberbach name .Just because I bought a nice dog doesnt mean I can call all the pups bred by me using the kennel's name of Silberbach . I dont have the right to pick other famous kennels name from Alfs pedigree to use on any dogs or combine a couple of famous kennel names to use on dogs I breed , own or sale .

Examples of the name stealing scam being used on pup buyers All info below was sent to me by people who contacted me to either see if I wanted to breed using dogs that they thought were wonderful or to tell me what was done to them .This is a very common scam used & I have tons of examples sent to me .
#1 example is person who answered a ad as follows& purchased a pup for $1,000.00 ; import pups ,Tiekerhook pups , large beautiful pups , hip guarantee , shots/worming , pups good for search /rescue , sport of schutzhund , police etc ..call xxxx
I noted several things wrong with papers that were sent to me .Breeder/Seller of pups lives in USA ,pups were born at breeders kennel in USA so not import pups .Breeder of pups on all paperwork is somebody other than Koos Hassing owner of Tiekerhook kennels so not Tiekerhook pups . True Import pups come with foreign registration documents written in foreign langauage . They are born on foreign soil not USA soil .Once imported their AKC registration will list the foreign country the pup came from directly behind that pups name .Breeder of pups should match owner of famous kennel claimed. This buyer was scammed .
#2 contacted me to see if I wanted to use his fine male for breeding .His dog was purchased based on a ad which read - kirschental pups, OFA pups , xlarge pups , vet checked $800.00 .
Kirschental kennel is in Germany ,owner is Karl & Marian Fuller . AKC papers on pups did not list breeder as the Fuller's . SO pups ARENT KIRSCHENTAL PUPS .Pups dad had Kirschental name but his breeder was not Fullers so name was stole .Dam of the sire to the litter was a kirschental dog , which had been sold to USA as a pup . She was bred, breeder kept a son . her son [ only in USA will you see this ] was bred back to her to create the the litter . So she herself was listed several times within the pedigree . In breeding should Not be done period ! Linebreeding should only been done using excellent titled dogs with good hip & done by those who know how to do it . No OFA on any of the dogs - so buyer again was victim of scam .
#3 ad read leerburg lines , xlarge huge pups , hips OFA certified , etc .
this ones a complicated . Leerburg lines implies that the pups have leerburg blood in them. Leerburg kennel is in USA owner is Ed Frawley .Seeing paper & pedigree on this breeding the pups parents had been named using Leerburg name but both parent dogs not from Ed Frawly's kennel .Grand parents in the pedigree also carried the leerburg name & also were not ever owned or bred by Ed frawley .Looking in the 4th generation there was finally a actual Leerburg dog which came from Leerburg kennels ! That means the pups have a great , great , great great grandparent who really came from Mr . Frawley's kennel .Again no OFA found on parents or grandparents .
Here is a classic example of someone selling pups claiming such n such line when the actual blood to any dog of leerburg lineage is way back in the pedigree & therefore so watered down its useless .All the dogs carrying leerburg name before the 4th generation have stolen kennel names . Needless to say this person who had bought the pup was disappointed to learn that their touted LEERBURG bloodline dog was not as special as the breeder told them & most of what was said to them was made up claim by the breeder of the pups .

Buyer Tips
1.if you are NOT shown a certified pedigree on pups & copy of at least parents AKC registration to look over before you buy -walk away from the sale .Most proudly display proof of these items online & allow you a copy to look over long before buying .That is if they have nothing to hide . like wise on OFA info , all claims can be verified with a little homework by you or real proof from breeder .
2. Even though you just want a pet & feel you don't need the best of best dogs from the best breeder - check out your breeders because reputation is everything .Pet dogs spend far most time in your home next to your children, family etc & owners want healthy dogs that live along side them for many years .so temperment & health is of the greatest importance .Find a breeder who test for health , has good parent dogs you can interact with & doesnt mislead you .
3. When breeders claim they have placed pups in schutzhund , search / rescue, show homes or police , etc ask to see actual proof /records of the pups they have placed in those avenues doing these jobs .Anyone can spew hot air , talk the talk .Commenest scam used is the claim that pups parent or grandparents were police dogs or used by law enforcement - always ask for real proof & call their bluff . Ask for law enforcement agency names & names of personel who own pups from their breeding , then check up on it . Schutzhund records can be verified thru schutzhund clubs .Watch out for those who make claims like above yet have no real proof as they may also lie about other more serious things .
5. Read all hip guarantees closely ,many of these guarantees are totally worthless & unenforceable by court of law .If you feel that you need one & are willing to pay extra for one -try to at least get a guarantee that is more fair towards the buyer- as you will be paying anyway for it .Always pay CLOSE attention to wording used in guarantee .You should be given a copy of hip guarantee for review long before any money exchanges hands .See my hip guarantee articles/ web pages for further clues on this subject .
