The Unsen Family Tree site-geneaology of a Luxembourgen family
--The UNSEN FAMILY TREE site--
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John Baptista Unsen was born Oct. 11 1875 in Beringen, Luxembourg, one of seven children to Johannes and Anna Erthum Unsen. He married Mary (Marie) Wagner of Pratz, Luxembourg, moved to America in 1896, settled in Dubuque Co, Iowa and had seven children. They were Agnes, Aloysius, Arnold, Raymond, Vincent, Richard, and Rosemary. Most of them lived in Dubuque, Iowa. John's brother, Matthias moved to Dubuque, also. He lived from April 3 1885 to Nov 24 1968. This information is sketchy, but Johannes had 7 children; John, Leon, Jim, Joseph, Nicholas, Matthias, and Michael.
There are many Unsens across the U.S., and some in Europe. There are still Unsens in Holdorf and Kalmus, Luxembourg, from the orignal family. At least one family is in Columbo, or Columbes, France.
The 'IOWA' UNSEN family
This post card was sent from Elburn, ILL. to Maple Park, IA in Jan of 1911, to Mary Unsen.
This small card photo was made in Florence in 1901 and sent to Madame Unsen to
 Rte. 4, Dubuque, Ia.
Its no wonder that many immigrants from Luxembourg moved to the Midwest; many parts of Eastern Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin look like the hilly sections of Luxembourg. Dubuque, Iowa could be a twin of Luxembourg, with its many green hills, rolling Mississippi river to the east, and historic buildings.
Beringen is in the central part of Luxembourg, near mountainous Mersch. Luxembourg is roughly the size of Rhode Island, but with one of the most diverse cultures in Europe.
Sepia tone photo with 'Melanie and her husband' written on back.
We're not sure if this is Melanie Wagner or not, nor who her husband is.
Do you have an answer for our brick wall question?
Attention UNSEN families!    This page is very incomplete, and the dates may be wrong! This is only just a start until I have more information sent to me. This page started on June 22, 2001, and will be updated as often as I get any records.  If you have any information you want to add or need to correct, please email me. Thanks for being patient.
