Macular Degeneration

MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular degeneration is today’s leading cause of severe blindness over the age of 55. It is estimated that by the year 2030, 20 million Americans will have been diagnosed with this disease.

WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION?

Macular Degeneration destroys the macula, the part of the retina that is the center of the eye’s sharpest vision. It thus effects central vision and causes the loss of the ability to read, write, drive, distinguish colors, identify faces and other fine vision. Central vision may become blurry or foggy, straight lines may become crooked. The person may feel a need for a brighter light for close work. Colors may seem washed out or there may be a gradual increase in the haziness of the overall vision. Sometimes there is a blind spot in the central vision.
There are two types of macular degeneration. 90 per cent of the cases are the “dry type” which progresses much more slowly. In 10 per cent the “dry type” progresses to the “wet type”, which may cause rapid damage to the macula and rapid loss of central vision.
Macula degeneration is a progressive disease, if left untreated it will cause blindness. Although conventional medicine offers very little to those whose eyes have begun to deteriorate, Chinese medicine has shown marked improvement.
A report from “Abstracts of Clinical Experience with Acupuncture” (p. 307), noted improvement in 40 to 60 percent of patients with optic atrophy, macular degeneration, and retinitis pigmentosa.

TREATMENT MODALITIES

THERAPIES INCLUDE:
Acupuncture, Chinese eye massage, microcurrent electrical stimulation, Chinese herbal formulations, nutritional supplements, lifestyle and dietary changes.
Acupuncture and microcurrent stimulation are the treatments of choice. Acupuncture is superior to almost every other therapy for bringing Qi or energy to the eyes. No other therapy compares to acupuncture for bringing Qi to the back of the eyeball, the retina, and the optic nerve.
Research has shown that the use of a home-based microcurrent electrical stimulation device is a very effective adjunct to a comprehensive program for the treatment of macular degeneration. Chinese eye massage helps to supplement other stronger therapies.
Macular degeneration is caused by an underlying imbalance of the body, for this reason, Chinese herbal formulations, acupuncture, nutritional supplements, lifestyle and dietary changes are beneficial for the treatment program.

FREQUENCY OF TREATMENT

Bringing qi to the eyes: ideally, treatment should be once a day in the early stages. At the very least, it should be done three times a week for any significant result. If this is impossible, a good second best is to do the eye massages three times a day, or perform the microcurrent electrical stimulation one to three times a day.
In addition, treating the overall body condition involves strengthening any weaknesses and inevitably takes a long time. This of course depends on the person’s condition, their ability to take the Chinese herbal formulations, nutritional supplements, their lifestyle and dietary changes. These treatments are best if scheduled once a week or possibly every other week.

RESULTS

It should be kept in mind that there are two parts to every treatment. One part is to bring Qi to the eyes, which is relatively simple with acupuncture. The other part is to treat the underlying condition, which isn’t as easy since it has taken many years for the condition to develop.
Regular treatment can do wonders in reducing or even halting the progress of the disease. Generally, those who come several times a week show marked improvement.
The state of California has a program that uses the microcurrent electrical stimulation for macular degeneration. It appears that everyone who has used the device has had beneficial results.
Acupuncture results can vary from patient to patient and depend on the severity of the disease, the duration, the patient’s energy, and the possibility of change. If treatment is sufficiently frequent, then, at the very least, degeneration can be halted, if not reversed to some extent. It is rare to reverse it completely. Occasional treatments are necessary to maintain the results.

Colds & Flu

Most people dread that time of year because they hate being sick and don’t like the available over the counter cold and flu medications that make them feel light headed and “drugged out”. Acupuncture and Chinese don’t make you feel that way. Instead, you just feel better. And you get better.

The most common illness is a cold, which is usually contracted one to two times a year. Colds and influenza are both caused from viral infections. It is best not to ignore a cold or flu because they can be painful, become chronic and many complications can result from them. Death from flu is not common. Most of these deaths occur in people over 75 years. However, in 1919, there was a flu epidemic that eventually killed 20 million people. At this time it was an offence to sneeze in public and offenders were locked up.

Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can be extremely beneficial for patients suffering from acute respiratory infections. Chinese medicine not only treats the symptoms but also provokes the body’s immune system to eliminate the virus. A study at the Beijing College of Acupuncture and Orthopedics revealed that the percentage of T-lymphocytes increased with acupuncture, showing an activated immune system.

Before illness occurs the immune system can be boosted with acupuncture and Chinese herbs to help prevent the frequency and severity of catching the common cold or flu.

Conditions acupuncture and oriental medicine treat which are related to colds and influenza are asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsilitis, cough, otitis media (ear infection), acute conjunctivitis. In addition,
acupuncture also boosts the immune system to
prevent many illnesses.
