Keeping The Faith, Our Church History
High Point Baptist Church came into existence as a result of brush arbor meetings. Around 1904 a brush arbor was built near where the old Miley's Greenhouses were on Highway 29. The Rev. William White preached those first meetings. During the coldest winter days, services were held in the High Point School house.
Deacons Monroe Smith, Brice Bridges, and George Bridges were instrumental in initiating construction of the first church building. Mr. Mosley donated the land for this building. The community united to provide stock logs which were carried to the Wright's Saw Mill where they were refined for use in the construction of the church. The shingles used for the church roof were also made by the church community.
High Point Baptist Church borrowed its name from the old High Point School. The Church was organized in 1905 with approximately 39 members. Rev. William White was elected the first pastor. The first Sunday School had three classes, one for children, one for middle ages, and one for older adults. The main transportation was horse and mule drawn wagons.
Later the members decided it was time for a larger building. Mr. Mosley provided a lot on Green River Road. The building was destroyed by fire in February 1938.
The third building was built on land provided by Mrs. Hamp Taylor. This land was on High Point Road. Early in 1964, the community was considering renovating the old building. Instead they decided to begin construction of a new church. Mr. Nathan Poole donated land adjacent to the older building for construction of the church. The first service was held Easter Sunday, April 1965. Services are still held in this building today. The former church building is now the fellowship hall.
