LOCATION
We are located one block from the St. Charles Avenue streetcar and the historic Garden District, an area of many historic antebellum mansions and homes. It is a 10-15 minutes streetcar ride to the world famous French Quarter and Bourbon Street. Canal Street, which is the main thoroughfare for downtown, is only 2 miles (3 km) from the Marquette House. The Amtrak/Greyhound station and the Superdome are only 1.2 miles (2 km) in distance, and the Mississippi River and the Morial Convention Center are about two miles (3 km) away. Guests may also take the streetcar further uptown to Tulane and Loyola Universities and the Audubon Park and Zoo.
Within walking distance of the Marquette House are several hotels, numerous restaurants and bars, a coffee house, a laundromat, several grocery stores and a Walgreen's drugstore. Also within walking distance are the homes of noted author Anne Rice and the Lafayettte Cemetery, the second oldest above ground cemetery in New Orleans.
FACILITIES
We offer both dormitory style accommodations and private rooms. Our facilities include a limited guest kitchen(refrigerator, microwaves, dishes, and utensils)and dining room, lounge area, patio-picnic area, bicycle rack, locker storage, public telephones, and internet access terminals. A laundry is located 3 blocks from the hostel. There is free on-street parking in front of the hostel. Off-street parking is available in a fenced gated parking lot for $5.00 per day plus tax. A number of personal toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc.) and food items are available for sale at the hostel office. Hostelling International- American Youth Hostels regulations prohibit alcoholic beverages in the hostel portion of our facility. Smoking is permitted only in outdoor areas (except for private rooms).
HOSTEL DORM BEDS
The dorm rate for Hostelling International members is $17.70 per night plus tax. Non-members add a $3.00 nightly membership fee or may purchase a full membership ($28.00 for U.S. residents, $18.00 for non-residents) upon arrival. A weekly rate of $99.00 plus tax is available to members. The hostel provides a pillow and blanket to each guest, but guests must provide their own linens and towel, or they may be rented from the hostel office for $2.00 (linens) and $0.50 (towel) plus tax. For sanitary reasons sleeping bags are not permitted on beds.
Dormitories are separated by gender. Dormitories are multi-roomed and generally have 8 to 16 beds per dormitory area, with each dorm having its own bathroom facilities. We cannot reserve beds in specific size dormitories, as this depends upon availability at check in. To reserve a dorm bed, send a cheque, traveler's cheque, or money order in U. S. dollars and payable through a U. S. bank branch for the first night's payment along with a letter listing the number of beds by gender that you need. Also note the date you are checking in and the date you are checking out. You will need to give us your MasterCard or VISA number, the name on the credit card, the expiration date, and the details of your reservation. There is a 24-hour advance notice of cancellation required for a refund of a dormitory bed reservation. For confirmation, please send a self addressed stamp envelope (or two international postal reply coupons if a non-U.S. address) or provide your email address.
PRIVATE ROOMS
Most of our private rooms are located in a 150 year old two story brick building with a wide veranda, and wrought iron columns and railings. They face an outdoor courtyard-patio. These rooms are one room suites with a queen bed, day bed with a pop up trundle bed (or rollaway bed), a private bath, refrigerator, and small living area. They are basically furnished, and can sleep 1 to 4 persons. Linens, towels, pillows, and blankets are provided. Off-street parking in our fenced and gated parking lot is included. There are no TVs or telephones. The member rate for 1 or 2 persons is $49.95 per night plus tax. Non-members add $3.00 per night. Each additional person over 2 persons is an additional $10.00 plus tax per night for adults, and $5.00 for children under 18 years of age.
In the same building is a two-bedroom, two-bath suite with refrigerator, microwave and living room. It can accommodate 1 to 6 persons. The member rate for 1 to 4 persons is $69.95 plus tax per night. Non-members add $3.00 plus tax per night. Each additional person over 4 persons is an additional $10.00 plus tax per night, and $5.00 for children under 18 years of age.
In a separate nearby building we also have Cross Hall, our deluxe accommodation. It consists of a large antebellum style double parlor with marble fireplace mantles, fourteen-foot high molded ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and private bath. It contains a queen-size bed, day bed with a pop up trundle bed, dining table, cable TV, mini-refrigerator, and in-room coffee and tea service. There is no telephone. Off street parking in our fenced and gated lot across the street is included. The member rate for 1 or 2 persons is $69.95 plus tax per night. Non-members add $3.00 plus tax per night. Each additional person over 2 persons is an additional $10.00 plus tax per night for adults, $5.00 for children under 18 years of age.
To reserve a private room, you must send a cheque, traveler's cheque, or money order in U.S. dollars and payable through a U.S. bank branch for the first night's payment, along with a letter requesting the private room you would like to reserve, the number of persons, and number of beds needed. List the date you are checking in and the date you are checking out. We do not accept credit card reservations for private rooms unless it is less than two weeks before the reservation date. There is a five-day advance notice of cancellation required for a refund on a private room reservation.
