Cloud base above Monaco, and at the top of the "stack". Got there with a FLYTEC!

Why should you buy a Flytec? Because Flytec of Switzerland has long been the innovator when it comes to compact instruments for free flight. Now customers in the USA have the advantage of Steve Kroop's authorized USA repair facility and his toll free customer support line. If you accidentally bash up your vario, Steve can usually turn around repairs in 24 hours or less! If in the small chance that Steve cannot repair your vario on site, and you need your vario right away, loaner instruments are available! Now that's service and support!!

Why should you buy a Flytec? Because they are simply the best, most respected instruments on the market. Flytec's new solid state pressure transducer is state of the art, and is only found in the FLYTEC 4000 series varios!! This innovative design (developed by Flytec) is more durable and more sensitive than transducers found in other similar varios. Due to this and other improvements, Flytec varios exhibit significantly longer battery life and higher reliability than other similar instruments.

Why should you buy a Flytec? Because Flytec has been a sponsor of nearly every Paragliding or Hang Gliding event in the USA for many years. When you purchase a Flytec instrument, not only do you have in your hand the best vario available, but you also help support the USA free flying community as well!! Furthermore, if you set a world record with a Flytec 4020 or 4030, Flytec will refund the purchase price of the instrument!

The view: looking west down the Côte d'Azur into Italy.

DON'T BE LURED BY A LOWER PRICED PRODUCT! High Plains carries Flytec because of its proven performance over the years. For the average pilot, a vario is a one time purchase. By spending only a few dollars more, you can buy the best, most reliable vario right off the bat!

=FLYTEC 4000 SERIES FEATURES=

FLYTEC offers an amazing amount of features in one compact, easy to use design. Yes, the FLYTEC varios may look a bit more "simple" than their competitors, but don't be fooled!! The 4000 series was specifically designed to give pilots only the information they need in flight, not a cluttered and confusing display.

Accessing the features is also made simple with FLYTEC's well laid out key pad. Imagine working that multi-core thermal with fifty other pilots, and trying to read your vario...only to have to glance down ten times just to get the numbers you need. NOT WITH THE FLYTEC 4000 SERIES!

These are competition tested designs, and offer every pilot an optimum balance in an accessible high tech flying instrument.

All 4000 series varios are enclosed in a tough, aerodynamic ABS case measuring 142x83x38mm. Weight with two batteries and attachment clip is 240gr. The Flytec varios include a high visibility, padded pouch, Velcro leg strap, two AA alkaline batteries, a detailed instruction manual, and toll free customer support line. Flytec varios come with a 1 year guarantee.

FLYTEC 4005: Mark's personal flight instrument. This is the "basic" vario that offers all the features most pilots will ever need.

-Altimeter 1: Adjustable absolute alt up to 17,000 ft (5,500m) with a resolution of 3ft or 1 m. Display in feet or meters.

-Altimeter 2: Programmable as an absolute or relative (height above launch, for example) up to 17,000 ft (5,500m) with push button zero function. 3ft or 1 m resolution. Display in feet or meters.

-Weather Adjustment (QNH): Variations in barometric pressure will effect your altimeter reading. Also helpful in an area of known barometric pressure and unknown altitude. Adjustable in either mbar or inHg.

-Variometer (analog): A change from other designs, the Flytec Vario gives an ascending/descending rather than a circular scale (makes sense). It uses the "two pass system", allowing the pilot to view, at a glance, his/her rate of climb with a resolution of 0.2 m/s. Has a sensitivity adjustment that can be set to three stages.

-Vaiometer (digital): A display range of +/- 20 m/s with a resolution of 0.1 m/s. can be set to either ft/min or m/s.

-Integrator: Allows the pilot to select how often the vario calculates the displayed rate of climb or sink. Settable to 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, or 35 seconds with updates every second.

-Speaker tone: Scale dependent pitch (as you go up quicker, the tone gets higher and faster). Volume is settable to either soft, loud, or off. Descent tone response point is adjustable.

-Speed display: Digital TAS (true airspeed) up to 80mph (130 kph) in a separate window when an optional vane-wheel sensor is attached. Includes adjustable stall alarm, and sensor correction option. Display can be set to read in mph, knots, or kph.

-Temperature display: Displays current temperature in either degF or degC. Can be set to display continuously or in alternation with the real time clock.

-Real Time clock: Settable hours, minutes, seconds, day, month, and year.

-Stopwatch: Display up to 9hrs 59min 59sec. Can be operated at any time by pressing the start-lap-reset button.

-Flight Time clock: Continuous automatic display of the "switch-on" time of the instrument.

-Flight Memory (flight book): Records the maximum values of the last 19 flights, and the current one, from most recent flight on down. Automatic memory administration means old flights are automatically released to make room or newer ones. Values recorded are: Date, Time of take off, Max Alt 1, Max Alt 2, Min and Max values on the variometer, and flight duration.

-Keypad: Durable, sealed keypad which can be operated with gloves on. Adjustments are carried out with a uniform three tier operating/setting sequence.

-Power Management: Available battery power is displayed during power up. Excellent low current energy consumption will give about 150 hours of operating time with two 1.5 volt AA alkaline batteries. 10 hour battery reserve warning alarm. Data can be retained for up to 10 years without batteries.

FLYTEC 4010: This is a step up from the 4005. In addition to all the features listed above, the 4010 adds the following:

-Altimeters: Both Altimeters can display up to 27,000 ft (9000m) vs 17,000 ft for the 4005.

-Flight Data: Flight book memory can be printed out on any printer with a serial or parallel port.

-PC capability: Comes with FlyChart 4.0 basic for Windows, and on-line program updates. A database which allows the pilot to manage and statistically evaluate their logbooks.

FLYTEC 4020 Professional: The next step up in the 4000 Series contains all of the features of the 4005, 4010, and adds the following:

-FAI Barograph: A must for those record hounds, or those who just like to play with the numbers. This is an FAI approved barograph which records Altitude, Temperature, Speed, and Vario. All units display within the tolerance range of the instrument. Different recording combinations can be set. Internal "photo marker" allows any number of recall points to be set during the flight. Total memory capacity: over 50 hours at 15 second intervals. Includes PC interface cable.

FLYTEC 4030 GPS Access: With an optional GPS like the Garmin 12XL, the 4030 adds the following features to those listed above.

-NMEA interface: Allows the pilot to connect with any compatible GPS instrument.

-Polar Recording: Polar curves are often a closely guarded secret of paraglider designers. However with the 4030, an optional GPS and speed sensor, one can determine the polar curve of their glider. Up to four polar curves can be stored in the form of 50 reference points.

-Glide Ratio Computer: When in flight, calculates your actual glide ratio above ground.

-McCready flight path optimization: Allows the pilot to fly the best possible speed know in thermal conditions according to the formula developed by Paul McCready.

-Final Approach Calculator: Calculates final glide to goal and arrival height above goal at current glide.

-PC Interface: An expanded version of FlyChart is included (FlyChart Pro) to facilitate the route planning, Polar Curve printout, McCready optimization, and a host of other functions.

HIGH QUALITY, ORIGINAL FLYTEC VARIO ACCESSORIES

Wireless Airspeed Sensor: Although airspeed on a paraglider is a rather dubious measurment, if you are looking for polar recording, this is the way to go. A very high quality sensor for ultra precise speed or wind measurement (yes, you can use it as a wind speed meter in conjunction with your 4000 series vario). Only the best components: saphire pivot bearings, light alloy vane wheel, etc.

Paraglider bracket: A VERY nicely made High Impact ABS and aluminum attatchment for your vario. If you are using a front mount reserve, we reccomment that you stay with mounting your vario on the reserve. If not, this bracket may be for you. It offers a much better viewing angle than when the vario is strapped to your leg. The bracket secures to your harness by two velcro straps fixed to a base plate (we reccommend that you ALWAYS use the backup loop). From there, the 6cm arm attaches by circular screw mount base of the vario, taking the place of the leg strap bracket. The ball and socket joint adjusts to nearly any angle. Due to the ball and socket, the vario can be "flipped up" during launch/landing for a little more protection, and then moved into viewing position after you're airborne. Once you're flying, the vario is pretty much in the same position for easy viwing.

Vario leg strap and clip: The same high quality leg strap that comes with all Flytec varios. ABS "clip" that screw to the base of the vario, and 2" wide velcro leg strap with an elastic portion for comfort.

OTHER FLYTEC PRODUCTS

Alti-Windwatch: This incredible little device is like having your own weather station in your pocket!! Measuring just 3.9 x 1.6 x 0.7 inches, you can take the Alti-Windwatch wherever you go. The wind vane is self contained and well protected. It can be rotated to an "off" position for further protection. This amazing instrument is an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, wind-chill calculator, anemometer, and clock all in one. The Alti-Windwatch has the following features:

Altimeter: 3ft (1m) resolution from 0-30,000 feet (9000m). Displays in ft or m. Sampling time adjustable between 1 or 10 seconds.

Barometer: Displays in inHg or mbar. Updates four times per hour. Displays trend of barometric pressure over the past 16 hours to assist in weather forecasting.

Anemometer: Displays wind speed up to 145kph. Calculates absolute peak or average wind speed over a given time (settable from 5 to 60 seconds in 5 second increments). Accuracy correctable +/- 4%. Can display speed in mph, knots, kph, m/s, or Beaufort).

Thermometer: Displays current temperature in Deg F or Deg C. Accuracy correctable +/- 2%.

Wind-chill: Calculates wind-chill based on current wind speed.

Clock: Time display in hours and minutes.

The Alti-Windwatch is enclosed in a tough, water repellent, high impact ABS case. A 3v Lithium battery lasts about 2 years (low battery warning). Guarantee is two years.

Windwatch: The same instrument as above, but only has wind speed, wind-chill, and temperature functions. Battery should last about 4 years. Waterproof to 16 ft. It floats!! Guarantee is two years. Great to carry in your glider pack as a windmeter, for golfing, sailing, etc.
