MATH CURRICULUM

Saxon math curriculum is one of many popular programs to teach
your child math. Many homeschoolers use this as well as public schools. Saxon has a lot of repetition that your child may need, but you can determine the amount of repetition they will need. Saxon builds upon what is learned; some other math programs will teach the child division and then move on to another chapter, let's say fractions; Saxon does not drop what was previously learned. As of right now, Saxon works for us because I can teach it to my 4 and 5 year olds with ease, but I know we will be changing soon because we really don't need the repetitious worksheets. We have so much fun with the Kindergarten though! Saxon Math is great for moms who need the prepared lesson plans. You can easily start your 3 year old on the Kindergarten level. My 5 year old is using the 2nd grade Saxon Math.

Ray's Arithmetics teach arithmetic in an orderly fashion, starting from rules and principles, building knowledge piece by piece, leading pupils from simple to complex. From the very first pages, Ray's Arithmetics incorporate what has become the scourge of today's math students - story problems. Students must READ simple sentences which pose real life problems, decide whether to add, subtract, multiply or divide, and finally arrive at the answer - sometimes mentally - sometimes in writing. "These books produce superior math students."

Singapore has great strengths as well as downsides that you'll want to read. Purchase this curriculum at the Sonlight or Singapore site. Strengths: There is a clear presentation of concepts with a focus on "mental math." A lot of people love Saxon in the earlier years and then switch to Singapore because of the "right" amount of practice; not too much repetition. The word problems force students to think and apply math in all kinds situations. Besides looking at the Sonlight or Singapore site for information, look at Paula's archives for the many comments from different homeschoolers. Keep in mind that in Singapore, children started school later than children in the US, so you'll probably need to take a placement test to determine what grade level you'll need. Some may need to choose a level or two lower.

Math-U-See curriculum is another popular program to teach your child
math. A lot of homeschoolers are using Math-U-See. Throughout the Math-U-See videos and curricula these words are emphasized: BUILD, WRITE, and SAY. Building with manipulatives incorporates the visual, kinesthetic, figurative, and tactile; Saying taps into the auditory and semantic; Writing teaches the symbolism of math and bridges the concrete and the abstract. The result? When a student sees the numbers on paper, he is able to visualize the concept.
