Upcoming Gigs:

Columbia Grounds
Saturday, January 19th, 7 pm

I have listened to music at this place a couple times, but this'll be my first turn on stage. Columbia Grounds is in Northeast Minneapolis on Central Avenue, just a coule blocks north of St. Anthony Parkway. Right across the road from the golf course. It appears to be larger every time I drive by, mostly because of outdoor expansion. Since the tea garden is under the snow at present, it's a two room deal--one for mostly food and one for mostly music with a doorway between. I'm hoping I'll have an audience so I
don't end up singing to myself. I plan to perform, among other things, most of the new album. Come, listen, offer encouragement, offer reactions. But, no, I will not perform "Highway to Hell" or, Heaven forbid, "Stairway to Heaven." And please leave the cowbell at home this time, Alice.
COffee Grounds,
Saturday March 1st, 8 pm

I am encouraged by the number of would-be fans who missed the Apple Jacks and October Coffee Grounds shows and have asked "Gee. When
are you playing again. Because of those of you who made it to those shows and made them fun to do and those of you who did not and said you wish you had, I'm booked at Coffee Grounds two more times. Once more in 2007 and then again in March.

Can't say yet whether the mercurial Tim-o will appear or not. Those of you who made it in October saw his first solo appearance at Coffee Grounds. I wisked him off the stage before he stole my audience. I may be a tad biased but I thought he was damn good. So, we'll see.

This is My Story and I'm Sticking to It

I got my first guitar at 10, determined to become the next Elvis. When that didn't happen I started a band called The Comrades with childhood friend, Scott Stevens.  We never made it to Ed Sullivan or even American Bandstand but were the darlings of WPRO radio in Providence for a year and performed on the local version of Bandstand. It was while playing a party with another band  called The Leftovers--because we'd all come from dis-banded bands--that I gave up electric music. During a break we all stuffed tissue in our ears because we were too loud rather than do the unthinkable: turn down the amps! The summer of '71,  I opened for Spencer Davis and later for John Lee Hooker at the Unicorn Coffeehouse in Boston. More recently I've opened for Utah Phillips and Gregg Brown in Minneapolis. Oh yeah, I recorded an album called One Good Friend in 1984 and a few years later bought another electric guitar. 1999 brought The Passing Years, my first CD. I recorded The Beat of Life (2004) at home and it lacks technical polish but includes more contributions by my son's Chris and Tim, now singer songwriters themselves. Both CDs contain a variety of styles ranging from  folk to rock and likewise some voice and guitar only songs as well as some songs where I am backed by a band. ASCAP and BMI have limited live performance options somewhat lately (long story), but I still find several good opportunities to perform a year which--along with teaching and parentling--keeps me sufficiently busy.
Call 763-533-8568 or write hmfamily@aol.com. CD's are $14 for The Passing Years (1999) and $10 for The Beat of LIfe (2004). I'd be willing to mail you one (or two) for a couple additional dollars to pay for the envelope and stamps. Copies of the record One Good Friend  (1984) are also available for $7 but don't mail very well. Pick one up at the next gig, or make arrangements to pick one up in person at the H-M family abode in Robbinsdale.
So, Steve, you ask: how's that new CD progressing?

Well, grasshopper, thanks for asking. I have nine songs written for what will be called "House of Cards," after the song with the most curious birthing process. It just arrived fully assembled. I re-wrote the one line that didn't ring true for Tim and oddly I did it for an entirely different reason that his. For whatever the reason, the muse messed up that one line. I have a demo with a rough version of the whole bunch, so I can begin rehearsing musicians and then get down to the recording itself. Hopefully, it will be available for the March 1st Coffee Grounds gig. Here's the line up:

You Got Me WIshin
 The Ballad of Joanne Little
Western Sky
 The Megabus
 You are home to me
 Cup of Water
Just  So Right
 Feeling Where We Are
 The Staying Kind
House of Cards

Wanna' hear a sample? My son Tim has set up a MySpace web page for me at:                    www.myspace.com/steveharlanmarks

Orders for CD's:
                              Hoffman Guitars

Lots of folks ask about my guitar. It was made by Charlie Hoffman who has also made guitars for Dakota Dave Hull, Charlie McGuire, Jerry Rau, Leo Kottke, and Ann Reed. Use the link to check out an interesting site.
