Many organizations have provided aid to the infants and young children living in the Nanjing Children's Welfare Insitute over the past few years, and have made a tremendous difference in their lives. On a visit to Nanjing in November, 2000, Homeland staff visited the orphanage, and found a group of adolescents and young teens living on an upper floor of the building. They were of varying abilities and had immediate needs that we were happy to provide for.
Homeland initially provided their quarters with a hot water heater, air conditioner, and music system. At the suggestion of the orphanage director, Homeland arranged for these children to be taken on an outing in downtown Nanjing, in February, 2001, during which time they were able to visit the local stores and select and purchase new clothing for themselves and the younger or less able children in the orphanage. They were overjoyed with this project and so were we! For most of them, it was the first time they were able to make a decision for themselves and others, and it was the first time they actually owned something personal.
This project was so successful that the orphanage invited us to repeat it, which we gladly did in January, 2002, and January 2003!
