My AOL e-mail address wasn't working properly for the past two years but is okay as of today and i plan on checking the mailbox on a weekly basis so please feel free to ask any questions and your questions, comments and observations are always welcome.
A)Table of Contents... what you are now reading...
B)Place names of each County, past and present,
---1)Key to codes used in Place Names of Illinois Counties
---2)Place names: Elevation, Incorporation Date, Former Names, Later Name, Post Office Dates of Operation, Population, Railroads, Rural Route, Towns, Townships, US Post Offices 1859/60, Zip Code... each county now has "last updated date" at the beginning of each county listing, this listing offers every town and and township that ever existed in Illinois and is grouped by the county (note: MANY towns appear in SEVERAL counties as it was the practice to name a town whatever name you wanted, they didn't care if five or ten other towns already had that name!)
---3)Railroads Operating in the State of Illinois prior to 1965 and in 1980
C)Sources of information used in Place Names of Illinois Counties
D)Links to other pages (located at the very bottom of this long web page) a short cut to getting there is to tap once on your "End" button located on the right side of your keyboard between the "Delete" and "Page Down" buttons... and you'll be there in less than one second.
Looking for a shortcut? Use your Ctrl+f keys and keep in mind that MOST common place names can be found in SEVERAL counties. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although i pay for AOL service i rarely use their browser as Internet Explorer works better, so when i visit my own sites AOL rarely knows it... didn't have any problem visiting it today, but have found a trick that works wonders: Whenever AOL send me a message that its too busy and to come back later i tap a few times rapidly on my "Refresh" button... and presto!... it wakes someone up and i immediately get in!

All i ask from anyone who visits here is... please tell me if something is not right... whether it's a spelling error or not in alphabetical order... we can strive for perfection without expecting to be perfect... i wouldn't want to mislead anyone by purposely offering wrong information. If an older town is missing from any of the counties and you know it... please send me an e-mail at IllinoyGenealogy@dummyaol.com telling me as much about it as you know and please cite your sources... Thank you for your cooperation and understanding

Counties are listed alphabetically below...
Welcome, this is a site that hopes to have the name of every town and township that ever existed in the 25 counties comprising the northeast quarter of the State of Illinois, listed under the present county name. If you've found one that you feel should be added to the list please e-mail the information to me at IllinoyGenealogy@dummyaol.com citing your sources.
Please note: all e-mail addresses have been distorted to read @dummyaol.com to deter spiders that read webpages and send SPAM to and from the e-mail addresses... flooding my e-mail boxes... so if you'd like to use any e-mail addresses then change it from @dummyaol.com to @aol.com
Do you have the name of a town and you aren't sure which county it belongs in? Then please read this paragraph. You should first visit another web page i've set up entitled "Illinois Family History: Place Names of Every Town Listed by County." Careful... common names are frequently repeated and relying on a new road map to find old towns is a sure way to invite troubles. A town by the common name of Washington appears in no less than six counties. It was common to have more than one town with the same name in the state before the US Post Office began enforcing rules against this practice in the 20th century, so you may want to visit the other site before using this one. Compile a listing of towns your ancestors lived in from old letters and documents and list the possible counties, you may be surprized to find you've been looking in the wrong counties. Hopefully this listing will enable you to walk around those brick walls that have been blocking your progress.
This web page is only for the Northeast quarter of the state, comprised of the 25 counties of Boone, Champaign, Cook, De Kalb, De Witt, DuPage, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Livingston, Logan, Marshall, McHenry, McLean, Putnam, Tazewell, Vermilion, Will, Winnebago, and Woodford. Unless otherwise noted the source of information is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Family History Library Microfiche #6051287 "Illinois Gazetteer" from Illinois Place Names by James N Adams, published by Illinois State Historical Society, Springfield, IL, 1968... at the bottom of this page is a complete listing of all basic sources.
Key to codes used in Place Names of Illinois Counties
ca=Circa (about) cf=Compare-used to call attention to similarity of name c h=court house (re: US Post Offices in 1859/60) inc=incorporated PM=Postmaster PO=Post Office RFD=Rural Free Delivery (used when referencing "Illinois Gazetteer" as a source) RM=Rand McNally Commercial Atlas & Marketing Guide (56=1956; 58=1958) RR=Railroad Twp=Township (aft1875) or (known date)=date created after 1875, or a known date
note: Although we commonly use the abbreviations of Ft for Fort, Mt for Mount, St for Saint; Ste for Sainte, they aren't used here in any of the place names for a couple of simple reasons... doing so would make it too hard to keep place names in alphabetical order and this enables you to quickly search for them by using your Ctrl + f keys.
Examples of how to interpret typical place name entries:
Fairbury, formerly Fairburgh, Pattonsburg and South Avoca; Indian Grove Twp; inc 08Aug1864; TP&W/Wab now only TP&W RR; Elev 689' (PO 24Apr1866-active 61739)(3643)
Fairbury, = the place name; a dash (-) after the name signifies it no longer appears on most maps. formerly Fairburgh, Pattonsburg and South Avoca; = former names in alphabetical order Indian Grove Twp; = the Township in which the town is located inc 08Aug1864; = date of incorporation, in this example its was inc under a former name TP&W/Wab now only TP&W RR; = Railroads, past and present as the Wabash was discontinued Elev 689' = elevation above sea level, measured in feet (PO 24Apr1866-active 61739) = Post Office, date established, dte ended or present status, Zip) (3643) = 1990 population
note on small US Post Offices: A story can easily be found in the changes that have taken place in the Post Office history of operations... imagine living out in the middle of no where when it could have taken several hours to make a ride into the nearest Post Office, where one could check up on the national, state and local news through the "town gossip" otherwise known as the local Postmaster. Many Post Offices were placed in business establishments as a way of guaranteeing a minimal amount of traffic and many Postmasters carried on the business of "dry goods" or a "mom and pop" grocery store with an area set aside for the operation of the Post Office... so they would have a steady income off the salary of Postmaster to help make sure their business thrived. Realizing that having a Post Office could easily make or break a business wasn't all that was considered as the survival and continued growth of a small community was dependent upon securing a Post Office for the needs of the community. Would you invest your life savings into property that would probably see a large devaluation because it may soon lose its Post Office to a nearby fast growing town? Perhaps you'd rather buy property nearer the fast growing town in the hopes that your property would steadily be worth more money than see it go downhill? This profit motive, many then would refer to it as simple horse sense, produced a climate where the politician running for US Congress knew how valuable it was to be able to influence where a Post Office would be established and he have some political clout. If the small Post Office continually ran in the red, lost money by expenses being larger than income, its neck would be on the chopping block and only a skillful politician could save it... and think of the votes he would get. When you see a Post Office in a town that straddles two counties you can see how they were "hedging their bets" or trying to make sure that they coud live in the best of both worlds and maintain their Post Office, regardless of how a county's politics might change from one election to the next, every two years. So if you see that a Post Office ceased operations and was later reestablished you'll know it was due to the pressure of the local voters trying to exert pressure to maintain the "convenience" of having a local Post Office. For future reading on this subject you may want to read various biographies of Abraham Lincoln that describe his early days in Menard County of being a shop keeper and maintaining the daily operation of a local Post Office in "Old Salem" now rebuilt and offically named "Lincoln's New Salem" in New Salem Park.
