Welcome... a table of contents...
Last updated 17Nov2006
My AOL e-mail address wasn't working properly for the past two years but is okay as of today and i plan on checking the mailbox on a weekly basis so please feel free to ask any questions and your questions, comments and observations are always welcome.
A)Table of Contents... what you are now reading...
B)Place names of each County, past and present,
each county now has "last updated date" at the beginning of each county listing, this listing offers every town and and township that ever existed in Illinois and is grouped by the county (note: MANY towns appear in SEVERAL counties as it was the practice to name a town whatever name you wanted, they didn't care if five or ten other towns already had that name!)
C)Sources of information used in Place Names of Illinois Counties
D)Links to other pages (located at the very bottom of this long web page) a short cut to getting there is to tap once on your "End" button located on the right side of your keyboard between the "Delete" and "Page Down" buttons... and you'll be there in less than one second.
Other Illinois research sites you'll find to be helpful:
---Illinois Family History Research: Place Names of the 25 Northeast Counties... offers the details of each town and township, this will help you determine IF you have chosen the correct county to look for records of your ancestors.... http://hometown.aol.com/illinoygenealogy/myhomepage/tv.html
---Illinois Family History Research: Place Names of the 44 Southeast Counties... offers the details of each town and township, this will help you determine IF you have chosen the correct county to look for records of your ancestors... same details as those listed above http://hometown.aol.com/dennisvcarter1/myhomepage/heritage.html
---Illinois Family History Research: Place Names of the 33 Western Counties... offers the details of each town and township, this will help you determine IF you have chosen the correct county to look for records of your ancestors... same details as those listed above http://hometown.aol.com/dcarter956/myhomepage/heritage.html ---Illinois Family History Research: Timeline for Genealogy... this is a chronology of events that has been designed for you to study WHERE one of your disappearing ancestors may have gone (did he go look for gold? to work on a canal? free land was offered? a new coal mining adventure?) as this would supply the missing motive for you to know why he suddenly vanished. The URL is http://hometown.aol.com/livingstoncounty/myhomepage/tv.html
---Livingston County, Illinois, Family History: Genealogy... a master index of every family known to have lived there 1830-1985 with 30 sources cited... you'll easily be able to tell at a glance when the family lived there and each entry has its source is cited, with many sources available over the Internet... so in a few minutes you should be able to confirm anything online. The URL is http://hometown.aol.com/livingstoncounty/myhomepage/business.html
Looking for a shortcut? Use your Ctrl+f keys and keep in mind that MOST common place names can be found in SEVERAL counties.
Welcome... this is a site that hopes to have the name of every town that ever existed in the State of Illinois listed under the present county name. If you've found one that you feel should be added to the list please e-mail the information to me, citing your sources.
At one time it was common practice to have several towns of the same name in the state, and many towns and cities had former names with a few having had several, so if you have used a current map to find an old town name you may have created your very own brick walls or even worse you have connected with the wrong lines. "Bloomfield" is an excellent example of this common practice, just look at any current map and find it now in Johnson County close to Vienna, in 1958 it had a population of 80. Did you know there was another Bloomfield in Adams County? Close to Quincy, in 1958 it had a population of 25. There were others in Edgar, Fulton, Greene, Johnson and Scott Counties and all were spelled "Bloomfield." Plus precincts in Johnson and Scott Counties by the same name of "Bloomfield." Nine localities, all named "Bloomfield." Do you need more examples, maybe hundreds of examples?
Sure hope you can easily see the point i am trying to make... many genealogies are out there now with improper connections because an inexperienced genealogist has picked the wrong county and matched up the wrong "SMITH" or "JONES" or "WHOEVER" because they thought they had the right county to chose from. Wrong connections are now made as the names that were available in that county were close so they figured a few misspellings or similar names would suffice. Or the town was the correct town but the county changed several times? Some still can't make the connection and are experienced enough to know that close doesn't always count, so they know they have hit a brickwall.
My suggestion is that you jot down the towns your ancestors are known to have lived in and look them up on the statewide list of over 16,000 place names using your Ctrl/f keys to do the search. Copy down each county that each town appears in after the town name and you'll probably be amazed to find that instead of them moving all around the state they lived in a few neighboring counties. For details of when the town was active you could consult the web pages listed at the bottom of this long web page for the 25 Northeast Counties, the 44 South Counties, and the last 33 West Counties. BTW every fact is documented on every page. Unless otherwise noted the source of information is Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Family History Library Microfiche #6051287 "Illinois Gazetteer" from Illinois Place Names by James N Adams, published by Illinois State Historical Society, Springfield, IL, 1968... at the bottom of this page is a complete listing of all sources.
For identifying more information on each town, you'll need to refer to the other web pages that have quick links at the very bottom of this page... just use your "End" button to quickly get to the very bottom of this long page and click whichever section of the state you need more details.
Why do we have copyrights? In this case... to make sure the information on this page will remain free for you to use...
