The Friendship Bar in South Houston, is one of a dying breed of taverns left in Texas. The Friendship is a true icehouse, serving it's beer straight from a mound of ice. It's a homey gathering place for new and old friends, a family place where children and dogs are welcome, and swearing isn't. It has never had air-conditioning despite South Houston's hot summers. It's two garage doors in front are always open (glass doors are installed during the winter) and a large barnstyle door swings open to a covered patio and barbecue area out back, allowing cooling breezes to flow thru. During summers a large industrial style fan also steadily hums in the background. The building itself is fairly non-distinct except for it's western saloon style sign on top.
Originally white painted cinder block walls, the longtime owner/propietors Harry and Neva Burch are doing some rennovating. The new interior (rustic barn wood) done mostly by Harry himself, gives the bar an old time saloon/general store feel, more fitting of it's true spirit. Antique tools, sketches of western figures, horseshoes, and flyers announcing birthday parties, dart, and shuffleboard tournaments, adorn the walls.
Many of the regulars have been coming for years and feel a sense of ownership in the place. Some can be quite vocal with their opinions when it comes to making changes in "their" bar! One wall recently painted a bright pink is evidence of Harry and Neva's sense of humor. Upon completion of the pink wall, and with a twinkle in her eye, Neva was overheard to say "This should give them something to talk about".
