Supply list

I am a strong believer that Jewelry Artists should work from a palette and similar set-up as a painter.    But because we don’t want to get bogged down with too much weight – and we all know that beads can be heavy – we need to do some strategic organizing and planning.    You will probably need several weeks to assemble all these supplies, if you have to mail order any of them.

If you have difficulty locating any of the beads or stringing materials, they are available from www.landofodds.com on-line.

If you have any questions about supplies, you can email me at warren@landofodds.com .

I have also created some KITS, if you want to go that route.      See below.

THE SUPPLIES and TOOLS LIST

A.    Sketchbook or notepad, and a few pens or pencils.     Bring something that will easily fit into your day pack or tote bag.

B.   Hobby Boxes, Beads, Jewelry Findings.     Buy the soft plastic, multi-compartment boxes, with lids.    These are found at places like Wal-Mart and K-Mart in the fishing tackle sections, or at Michaels or Hobby Lobby.    You need this number of compartments:        54 to 72         which translates into three or four 18-compartment hobby boxes.

Below is a table of what you need to fill each of these compartments, and bring with you.    Feel free to substitute similar beads.   Select beads you would personally like to use in a piece of jewelry you would wear.    I suggest the “color”, but it’s fine if the bead has a pattern in it or on it, is smooth or faceted, or transparent, translucent or opaque, as long as the predominant color is obvious.

I suggest sterling silver, gold-filled or vermeil findings and metal beads/components, for the most part.   But you can substitute gold-plated and silver-plated base metals in their place.

Put the beads you want to hold in each compartment, into small Zip Lock Bags, and stuff these into the compartment, while you travel.

Secure the lids on these hobby boxes, when you pack them.

COMPARTMENT    WHAT’S IN IT    COMPARTMENT    WHAT’S IN IT
For most of the workshops on jewelry design principles, we will be arranging black and white beads on bead boards to illustrate and trial & error with each point of discussion.

3    10 – 6mm round fire polish beads, crystal;  10 – 6mm smooth round beads, jet matte
For the color workshop, we will play with beads representing the colors in a color wheel, by arranging them on a bead board.   These beads may be opaque, transparent or translucent, smooth or faceted, any shape but round and oval will be the easiest to use in the color exercises we do.

You may want to use some of these beads again during the workshops where we will be designing contemporary jewelry pieces, so you should consider some coordinating in terms of color tones and shades.

Remaining Color and Bead Choices Below:
For Compartments 35 to 54, (up to 72)

You will need these beads for working on your contemporary bead strung and bead woven pieces.

Concentrate on 2 palettes.

Select beads for each of the following two color palettes.

Choose a preferred color scheme within each palette.    There are many subtle variations on these bead colors.  You want to end up with 3 colors in each of the palettes that you feel would work together in the same piece.     Thus, you want 3 rich colors and 3 bright colors.

a.   Rich Color Palette
Golds, Deep Purples (such as purple iris), Olive Greens
Or,
Bronzes, Deep Blues (such as blue iris), Burgundies (rich reds)

b. Bright Color Palette
Chartreuses (or peridot or moss green), Fuchsias (or old rose), Tanzanites (also called Cardinal blue, or deep blue-violets or darker violets or lavenders without a red tone)
Or,
Aquas (or green-blues or blue-greens), Peaches (or lighter shades of orange or padparadscha or orangy-pinks or orangy-reds), Peridots (or lighter, paler greens)

For each of 2 color palettes (3 colors per palette, 6 colors total), you’ll want to bring the following assortment of beads:

3 coordinated colors 11/0 delicas  (5 grams each) (thus, one for each of the 3 palette colors, for a total of 6 colors)
3 coordinated colors 11/0 seed beads (10 grams each) (thus, one for each of the 3 palette colors, for a total of 6 colors)

3 coordinated colors 8/0 seed beads (10 grams each) (thus, one for each of the 3 palette colors, for a total of 6 colors)

Plus, in colors that coordinate to each palette (but NOT necessarily in each of the 3 colors within each palette):
4-6       Focal beads (between 8mm and 20mm)
Size #1 and Size #2 Miyuki bugle beads  (about 10-15 grams of each color)
300-400        Assorted 4mm-12mm beads, such as flat rectangles, flat round discs, flat oval beads, bicones, round, faceted or smooth, other shapes
(with:
 4mm, you’ll want at least 100 of a particular style/color
 6mm, you’ll want at least 50-100 of a particular style/color
 8mm, you’ll want at least 100 of a particular style/color
 10mm, you’ll want at least 25 of a particular style/color
 12mm, you’ll want at least 12 of a particular style/color )

About 100 to 300 total of Austrian Crystal Beads, such as
2mm, 3mm and 4mm round  (series 5000)   (about 50-100), coordinating color(s)
3mm and 4mm bicones (series 5301)  (about 50-100), coordinating color(s)
Any other sizes/shapes, if you want

Bring a selection of your favorite beads that you like to work with, if not already covered on our supply list.

Some jewelry designers like to work with smaller size beads; others with larger sizes.  I leave it up to you to select what you sizes you prefer to work with.

Some of the beads listed above and related to specific projects and workshop activities could do “double-time” for this open-ended supply list, as well.

C.   A Short Bead Board, with 3 or more channels.

There is a 9”x12” bead board, 3 U-channels, flocked, will accommodate up to a 28” necklace, that is very useful.

D.  Stringing Materials
FireLine, size D (.008”), in either Smoke Grey (also called charcoal or black) and/or Crystal (which is really white), 125 yard spool
Nymo D or C-Lon D thread in black or white, on a bobbin or a spool or a large bobbin
Nymo D or C-Lon D in a color(s) that coordinates with your two bead color palettes
Soft Flex cable wire, .019”, 100 ft spool
Acculon Tigertail, .012”, 100 ft spool

If you like working with other stringing materials, bring these as well.   If these other stringing materials require special parts to finish off their ends, add those to your supplies.    If these materials require any special tools or needles, add those to your supplies.

E.   Tools
8  Size #10 English Beading Needles
8  Size #12 English Beading Needles
3  Sharps beading needles, Size #10
Crimping Pliers
Chain Nose Pliers

If you need to bring magnifiers, bring them.
If you have a very light weight, portable, battery operated light, you might bring that.

We’ll be sitting for long periods of time.  If you need a seat-pad to make this more comfortable, bring that.

F.  Other Supplies

Box of colored pencils.  You need at least these colors to work with:
Red, Blue, Green
Yellow, Orange, Purple
Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Blue-Violet, Red-Violet, Red-Orange
White, Black, Grey

(NOTE: In many pencil sets today, you may not be able to find all these color wheel colors.   Don’t go out of your way to find them.   Think how you might make the color using two pencil colors.  For example, “Blue-Violet” can be made from Magenta and Blue.)

Pencil Sharpener

Graph paper for Brick 1-drop or Peyote 1-drop for Delica or Cylinder beads.   [If it just says “brick” or “peyote”, this is 1-drop.]     We’ll be working these stitches “flat”.   We’ll be working with beads that are roughly 11 to the inch  (11/0 delicas or cylinder beads and 11/0 seed beads).   This is basically the same graph for both stitches.   If you hold the paper vertically, it’s for one, and then hold it horizontally, it’s for the other.      You can pull off copies of bead graph paper on line.   2 or 3 sheets is more than enough.    Many free web-sites offer these, including http://www.blackgiraffe.com/free.htm

Roughly 3”x6” square piece of ultra suede    (a lot of fabric stores have scrap pieces that they sell)

1 piece of Lacy’s Stiff Stuff, 4 ¼ x 5 ½”

G.  Tote Bag or Case to carry everything in

Plan to pack any items prohibited from the passenger cabins in airliners in your checked baggage.

THE KITS

I realize that sometimes accumulating all the different kinds of things a jewelry designer needs can be daunting.   If you would like to buy one or more kits, instead, I have these options available to you.

You can order the kits directly from me:
warren@landofodds.com
615/292-0610

I’m flexible in terms of putting these kits together.    If you want to add, delete or substitute for any item(s), I can do that.

I can either ship these directly to you, and you then would bring them with your luggage (probably the best option), or I can ship these to the hotel in Italy.    I would need to ship these before May 15th, 2008.   Shipping to Italy through the US Postal Service would run around $81.00.
