Avion Senor Vargus de la Salsa
Meet GusGus aka Goose. Gus is a Bouvier des Flandres. Bouviers originated as cattle drovers in Belgium. They are powerful dogs with a high degree of intelligence. Gus is my fourth Bouvier and my first male Bouv. He is trained as a Mobility Assistance Dog. He pulls my wheelchair, carries my things in a backpack and is currently being trained to "brace", which is to say he will stand perfectly still while allowing me to lean on him or pull on him to get me up and running from a sitting position.

My Love of the Bouvier
In early 1983 I happened to read an article in the newspaper about a Bouvier des Flandres in Irvine California that worked on the police department there. It had a picture of the dog at work and one of him at home by the fireplace with the officer's small children. As I read about this dog, I was immediately smitten. I saw my first Bouv in the flesh and fur several months later and knew I had to have one.....or two...... or three..... perhaps I could get away with a small herd of them. They seem to cluster nicely and I now know of virtually no one who owns only one.

NOT FOR EVERYONE
The Bouvier is definitely NOT for everyone. They are large and hairy. They need to be with someone who will definitely train and remain alpha within their pack. They need regular grooming and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of personal attention from their person. These are FAMILY dogs....they MUST be with their family. If you want a dog that will live outside the family home, off the family bed and furniture, and a dog that will pretty much let YOU do YOUR thing.... the Bouvier is not a good match for you. Please read: "DON'T BUY A BOUVIER" by Pam Green for further information on the little idiosyncrasies and endearments of the breed. Trust me....you are or YOU AREN'T a perfect match for a Bouv. I sure am though.
