Hewes Elizabeth Hewes Durham

Elizabeth was the daughter of Isabel Hewes . Sometime prior to 1750 she married John Durham who became one of the leading members of the mixed blood Kent County families. John Durham was probably born sometime before 1733. It is possible he was the son of Daniel Durham Senior but that has not yet been confirmed.

In 1754 John Durham purchased land in Little Creek Hundred, his wife is named in the papers. It is not known where the family was living prior to this purchase.

In 1757 John Durham was mentioned in the will of his mother-in-law, Isabel Hewes. No mention was made in the will of Elizabeth Hewes Durham, so it is possible that she was dead by this time. If all of the children mentioned in her husband's will were Elizabeth's then she was probably born sometime before 1730.

On 9 April, 1788, John Durham, sick and living in Little Creek Hundred, wrote his will. Based on this will and earlier information we have the following children for John and Elizabeth Hewes Durham:

  1. John Durham Jr. (d. 1776)
2 children: left in the care of Rebecca Durham
  2. William Durham (d.1797)
  3. Isaiah Durham (d.1800)
  4. Whittenton Durham (d.1793)
  5. Sarah Durham married John Sisco
  6. Letitia Durham married Thomas Lacount
  7. Elizabeth Durham married to Thomas Concilor
