NEWS:  GATHERINGS, HARTMAN - FULMER,  CLARION DEMOCRAT
The Hartman - Fulmer reunion on Saturday, Aug. 14, was not very well attended even though we had good weather.  After a delicious and bountiful lunch a short business session was held and the following officers were elected for the new year:  Clyde Hartman of California, Pa., president; Ray Shook, of Curlsville, vice-president; Mrs. Mack Summerville of Rimersburg, secretary, and Mr. Donald Newell of Sligo, R. D., treasurer.  The highlight of the entertainment program was the reciting of two old poems by Aaron Hartman of mount Airy near Sligo.  The poems,  "the Old Homestead", and "Brown's Mistake", were ones that Mr. Hartman had learned and recited in the 1890-91 term of Nail School in Toby Township.  They were perfectly recited to a highly appreciative audience.  Heber Rankin gave a short talk relating family history that he had found since the last reunion.  The Hartman ancestor, George   Hartman, was born  in Rockhill Township, Bucks Co., in 1776, and married Elizabeth Jacobi of Durham Township in Bucks Co., in 1803.  In 1831, when the youngest of their ten children was 11 years old, they sold their Bucks Co., farm and moved to "Frosty Valley's" Hemlock Township, in Columbia Co., where George died in 1838.  George was buried in the Cemetery in Bloomsburg.  Elizabeth died in 1859 and is buried in Harmony Cemetery at Milton,.  The Fulmer ancestor, Daniel Fulmer, was born in Springfield Township, Bucks Co., in 1784.  He married Margaret Boyer of the same county, and they with their four children, moved to Columbia Co., before 1830.  The Fulmer farm was located where the city  of Bloomsburg is today.  In 1840 the Fulmer's sold this farm and moved to Toby Township in Clarion Co., leaving their youngest daughter, Sarah Fulmer Haugenbuch on the Haugenbuch farm at Light Street.  Sarah had married Jeremiah Haugenbuch. John William Hartman, the third child of George Hartman, came with the Fulmers to Clarion Co.  He had married Susanna Fulmer and five of their ten children were born in Columbia Co., before they came to Clarion Co.  That was the back ground of Fulmer and Hartman families of Toby Township.  The oldest members present at the reunion were:  James Shook, Aaron Hartman and Harry Hartman, all of whom were over 89 years.  The reunion next year will be held at the same place on the second Saturday in August 1966.

SLIGO- Carl M. Heeter, 78, of Sligo, owner of Heeter Lumber Company which operates businesses in Sligo, Rimersburg and New Bethlehem, died in an explosion that occurred in a small tool shed at his summer home along  the Allegheny River at West Monterey at about 8  a.m. Monday July 24.  State police are investigating the fire.  Trooper David Spoharski reports the "fire appears accidental in nature.  It appears the victim was in a shed which contained gasoline when he struck a spark and ignited the fumes; the ensuing explosion killing the victim."  Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department members were dispatched to the scene by the Clarion county Emergency Control Center (9-1-1), at about 8 a.m. Monday with a neighbor reported the incident that occurred along the Allegheny River, about 1/2 mile upstream toward Parker from West Monterey.  Reports indicate firemen could do little except contain the blaze to the shed where Mr. Heeter's body was discovered inside the building.  Clarion County Coroner Rick Goble, summoned to the scene at 8:30 a.m. Monday, says Mr. Heeter "was in a little tool shed area mixing gasoline when it ignited and there was an explosion... We buried Ben Himes on March 19, 1999, close to the first day of spring, "almost planting time," as he used to say to me.  I was assisted by my five brothers-in-law as we carried the wooden casket through the snow to his grave site.  It was a beautiful, bright Saturday morning in the rural peaceful Oatka Cemetery of Scottsville.  His six daughters sat beneath a temporary shelter as their families gathered around in the bright sunshine.  The Reverend Robert W. Sapp officiated as huge flocks of Canadian geese flew overhead, honking their spring salute.  Ben would have liked that, this season was his favorite time of year.  Born in Brookville, PA nearly 89 years ago, my father in-law was like a father to me since my dad passed away 24 years ago.  A long-time resident of Greece, Ben moved his family to their new home on Parma Center Road when he retired from Kodak in 1971.  This is where Ben lived until he died on March 4, 1999.  Ben was a farmer at heart.  At anytime in the fall, he could be found picking apples at his friend Les Haradine's Burritt Road apple orchards.  many of his summer day were spent joyfully helping me on my small Greece farm. He loved planting crops and watching them grow and produce abundantly.  I am going to miss him greatly when busy planting time comes in  May.  Oh yes, he will be there in spirit, but no longer will I see his big smile as he drives my old Farmall tractors.  Without him, I will do my best to see that those rows of tomatoes are planted straight.  Ben was always a stickler on that.  I know that he is remembered and respected for all the kind deeds he performed for countless people. I shall remember him for all those good things, but most of all I will miss him because he was my god friend and a perfect father-in-law.  Ben was a great family man, married to Helen Murphy Himes for nearly 62 years. They raised six wonderful daughters during some rough depression and war years.  My father-in-law loved his family, neighbors, church, woodworking, hunting rabbits, and beagle hounds.  he was also fond of picking sweet corn and apples, making popcorn, eating homemade ice cream, windmills, home and his country.   so it was fitting when we buried Ben Himes in the shadow of a tall windmill and a nearby farm with horses.  He must have planned it that way.  He is now with his Lord.  I sure hope there are apple orchards and old Farmall tractors up there for him to enjoy.

OBITUARY:  ELIZABETH HULINGS  from the library in Tionesta, Pa.
Mrs. Elizabeth Hulings was born n the city of Erie, Pa., on May 5, 1838, and died at her home in Tionesta, at 1:30 p.m., on Monday, January 25, 1909, aged 70 years, 8 months and 20 days.  At the age of sixteen years she came to Tionesta to make her home with the family of Dr. W. C. Whitley, a prominent physician in his day.  She has since resided here and on January 5, 1865, in the city of Philadelphia, Pa., she became the wife of Hon. S. S. Hulings.   They took charge of the Holmes House, a well known hostelry here, which they successfully conducted until his death, which occurred November 27, 1868.  Soon after the death of her husband she and her sister, Mrs. C.A. Randall, went into   business together at what is now known as the Rural House, where she has since made her home.  Although not enjoying the best of health for the past couple of years, her condition  did not become alarming until last Friday, when she took to her bed and gradually grew weaker, finally passing peacefully away with a smile on her face, that betokened a satisfaction as to the hereafter, that  is very comforting to those who are left to mourn her loss.  During her many years in Tionesta Aunty Hulings was dearly beloved by all.  Her charity is known in many homes in this vicinity, it being a pleasure to her to look after and help the needy.  She was a kindhearted Christian woman and her noble traits will long live in the hearts of the people hereabouts.   And only those with whom she was most closely connected can ever know what it is to miss the touch of the hand that is motionless or the voice that is forever still.   She was the eldest daughter of a family of four children born to Charles and Anna Wanzor, an older brother, James Wanzor, a veteran of the Civil War, dying at McKeesport, Pa., some ten years ago, and Mrs. C.A. Randall and William Wanzor, both of whom reside in Tionesta.  She is also survived by several nieces and on e nephew.  Funeral services will be conducted by Revs Bailey and Calhoun at her late home here this Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, after which the body will be laid to rest beside those of her husband in Riverside cemetery to await the Master's call on the Resurrection morn. The floral offerings from relatives and friends were numerous and appropriate, among them  a wreath from her nieces which was especially beautiful.

MacIver of the Presbyterian church, conducted the services, which consisted of prayer, reading of the Scriptures and the recital of Tennyson's poem, "Crossing the Bar," after which amid a profusion of flowers ad mingling of tears, the body of this kind, affectionate and devoted mother, was consigned to its last resting place in Mount Collins cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers, J.C. OBITUARY:  DEATH OF JARED P. HULING from the library in Tionesta, Pa.
Mr. Jared P. Huling, one of the best known men in Forest and adjoining counties, died at his home in this place, one last Sunday morning at 3 o'clock, aged 63 years, one month and 16 days.  The deceased had been afflicted with a stomach trouble for several months, which developed while he was employed as a carpenter on a new building at the State Institution at Polk, Pa., and he had returned home on last December 4th, soon thereafter becoming bedfast.  Although everything that affectionate care and medical skill could provide was resorted to, he grew steadily worse until the end, when he passed peacefully away.  The subject of this sketch was born on a farm near Lock Haven, Clinton County, Pa., December 1, 1851, and was one of the family of twelve children born to Samuel Coleman Huling and Susan (Fagundus) Huling, whose paternal ancestry had emigrated to America from France in an early day, and had taken an active and honored part in the Revolutionary War, and early Indian warfare in the Susquehanna Valley.  He was educated and grew to young manhood in his native county, coming to Tionesta in 1871, where for some years he became a teacher in the public schools of this county, and thereafter followed the occupation of a carpenter, in which trade he was an expert, and which he followed principally throughout the greater part of his life.   Soon after coming to Forest county he was joined in marriage with Sidania, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Haslet, who died about 1881, one daughter, Susie E. wife of C. A. Childs of this place, survives as a result of this union.  On May 7, 1890, he married Miss Myrta Elder, then a teacher in the public schools of East Brady, Pa., and resided about four years at Pleasantville, Pa., removing to Tionesta in 1894, where he has continuously resided since.  Four children graced this latter union all of whom survive as follows:  Robert C. of River Ridge Farm, near Franklin, Pa.; Jared Paul, of Marion, Ohio; Clair C. of Warren, Pa., and Anna Mary at home.  Besides his wire, Mrs. Myrta Huling, President of the W. C. T. U. of Forest county, he is also survived by the following brothers and sisters; James A. of Tionesta, Pa.; John of Pine Station, Pa.; Miss Annie E., and Frank  of Jersey Shore, Pa., and Charles and Watt of Philadelphia.   Funeral services  were conducted at the late home here on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, by Rev. H. Lee Dunlavy of the local M. E. church, assisted by Rev. H. A. Bailey of the local Presbyterian  church, appropriate music being rendered by the choir of the M. E. Church.  Interment followed in the Mt. Collins cemetery.  The pall bearers consisted of his three sons, Robert, Paul and Clair, two brothers, John and James Huling and C. A. Childs.  The floral offerings were numerous and most appropriate.  The deceased was for many years a useful and most highly respected citizen of this place, is mourned by a wide circle of loyal friends, and had accepted Christ as a persona Savior and become a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.  The desire nearest to his heart was for the welfare of his wife and family, and no sacrifice was too great to make if he believed it necessary to contribute to the education and happiness of his children.   This his chief ambition in life was realized in a most satisfactory sense, for his commendable efforts in this direction during life leave behind him a fruitage that is highly creditable to his memory.
