LADY LAKERS
FINISH A SUCCESSFUL 2001 SEASON
The Western New York Lady Lakers White 16-and-under national women’s travel basketball team have completed another highly successful season. The Lady Lakers have now established themselves as a top team in the country in their age group.
The Lakers team consists of some of the best Junior (2001-02 season) basketball players in the western New York area, as part of the AAU/US Junior Olympics program. They recently ended their season at the USJ National Tournament in Washington, DC, held July 26-29. The team played up to the competition, defeating teams from Colorado, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York City to go 5-0 and win their pool.
The team had an exciting 54-52 win over the Philadelphia Belles, a perennial national powerhouse.  In that game, the Lady Lakers made 18 of 22 shots from the free-throw line down the stretch.
The Lady Lakers then advanced to the quarterfinals against the Durham, NC, Triangle Knights.  They survived a hard-fought game, winning by three points to advance to the Final Four for the second straight year.
Up next was the Capitol City Comets from the Washington, DC area.  The western New York representatives played a tremendous game and were beating the Comets by eight, with five minutes to go in the game.  They were not able to hold on and lost by two points.
The season began with an invitation to the Nike-sponsored Boo Williams Tournament in Hampton, Va., in April.   Despite the little practice time together, the western team played extremely well, going 3-0 in pool play and losing in the quarterfinals to the Capitol Classics 58-56.
The highlight victory was the tremendous win over the Beltway Cougars, a team from the Baltimore-DC area, which finished third in the AAU Nationals last year in Amarillo, Texas.
During the Blue Chip Tournament in Philadelphia, July 17-20, the girls played at the 15 year-old level.  The Lady Lakers had a fantastic one-point victory over the New York City Gouchoes Excel - Chamique Holdsclaw’s old AAU team, one of the most competitive clubs in the country.  A tough loss by three to the WNBA Black Knights put the Blue Chip record at 5-1 for the week.
The Western New York Lady have proven themselves as one of the top teams.  They have won 12 tournaments over the past two years. They have defeated some of the top AAU programs in the Nation!  Having just completed their Junior year in high school, the girls are looking forward to their 2002 season with The Lady Lakers AAU Basketball team.

We are very proud of all of you and wish you the very best in your upcoming Varsity Basketball season.

The Lady Lakers are coached by Mike Ryan, Bob Pauly and Hank Dahlman.
