The Voice Incomparable - By Video

Journey Audio and Video Archive

Available on VHS
As I sit here watching this Journey concert from Oakland 1982 I am reminded of many things. Not only the songs of course, but other precious details of that time period. The fashion of the concert goers, the price of tickets, and even the way I looked. This all soon fades as I can't seem to stop zeroing in on Steve Perry and his virtuoso performance.  He sings so hard!  He hits and holds notes that seem to come and end from the deepest corners of his soul. When he is not singing he seems only to have enough energy to just catch his breath! This man is in such a state of euphoria that even time itself does not exist.

He gathers himself and then throws his head back and sings like never ever before. And what amazes me most is that he sings it with his EYES CLOSED. Without peripheral consciousness, without any awareness to whatever may be. While 80,000 people think what they are watching is a performance it is nothing of the sort. It is a total immersion within a moment. That's what he was made to do. He is a vocalist that puts himself into a trance like state and doesn't come out of it till the heavenly shades of night have fallen.

You see, when Perry sings in concert, he sings as though it's the last time he will ever be able to do so. With all the effort and all the glory his voice gives while performing in concert, one wonders how he even makes it through an entire show/. Is this not the epitome of what a vocalist is supposed to be? That's what a singer is to me, and Perry is one of the greatest. He is finishing the ballad now. He still hasn't opened his eyes.

A Must Have Item for any collector.
