Notes for ISRAEL CHADWICK:
From Some Known Facts Concerning The History Of The Chadwick Family {was found in a file at Montgomery Co., In. library and says the foregoing data, concerning the history of the Chadwick Family, was gathered and assembled together to be read on the occasion of the Chadwick Reunion held on August 5, 1934 by Edna Chadwick Powell. Later revised by Julia Chadwick McVay.}: Our own family history begins many years before the Revolutionary War, when there landed on the eastern coast of North America, three brothers by the name of Chadwick. The brother from whom we directly descend settled in Pennsylvania, another going to Ohio, and the other to New Jersey. The one who settled in Pennsylvania had three sons, Jesse, Andrew, and Israel. The father of these three boys was murdered by Indians in an old stone house, which was an old land mark in Pennsylvania. After some years, Jesse went to Wisconsin, Andrew remained in Ohio, and Israel went to Virginia. It is to Israel, the youngest of the three brothers that we trace our ancestral descent. After going to Virginia, he settled near Staton. Here he met an heiress by the name of Hannah Thompson. After a romantic courtship of stealing out to meet each other for a few moments at a time, they planned to run away and get married. Her people were bitterly against this match, and told her she would be disinherited for life should she marry this young Mr. Chadwick. Their only objection was that he was a poor man. Nevertheless, he placed a ladder at her window one night, and helped her to the ground. They made their escape on horse back, he having two horses waiting a few steps from her home. They were married, and started their married life in the vicinity near where she had been reared, but her parents never forgave her, and at their death, left her nothing, although they were wealthy. Now this Hannah was the one our fathers called Granny Chadwick, who spent her declining years with our grandparents in the old log house.
