Reds Story
On April 7th, 1997 we learned our five year old Doberman Pinscher "Dirty Red" may only live another six months. We were devastated. Then we learned after his exam, with treatments he would live one to two more years. This was wonderful news. The University of Illinois Small Animal Hospital treated my five year old Doberman Pinscher for lymphoma his prognosis was one to two years. Dr. Kitchell treated Red with powerful chemo drugs without the benefit and expertise of a biopsy report. Dr. Kitchell was absent for Reds most important second follow-up and chemo treatment and three days later Reds lymphoma came back. They did minor surgery on Red to remove a lymph node for testing and almost killed him. The lymph node they took during this surgery was ruined and could not be tested, then when they found out this lymph node was ruined and could not be tested they failed to take another one. Red went through this surgery for nothing and as a result of this failed surgery, Dr. Kitchells abscence and lack of proper care Red died just two months and two days into the treatments when his prognosis was one to two years. This was the most terrible experience my wife and I have been through in our lives. We know all animal lovers will understand this even though the University doesn't get it. Now we must sue the University to get our $5869.04 back even though these events are clearly documented on our receipts. All of Dr. Kitchells education, diplomas, and published articles do not mean a thing if she is absent, negligent and does not care about the animals she treats. Dr. Kitchells cancer fighting technics were definately incorrect for Red. New drugs and new technics are changing everyday. I know Red sure wishes he had a different doctor now. This was nothing but a nightmare and the worse experience I have ever had dealing with veterinarians in over 40 years.

My Dirt Man "Dirty Red"
This was my beautiful chocolate red doberman pinscher "Dirty Red". He was five years old. He was special, he was very large and his name really did not fit him as he was very handsome. He would smile, wag not only his tail but his whole rear end. He also loved to ride in the car and van and bark at motorcycles. Red would stand when riding he was like a hawk he didn't miss a thing. He would stand the whole 336 miles to and from the University. He was also my shadow when I got up he got up, he went everywhere with me. He was a great ball player too. He was also special in he would let the veterinarians give him shots and take his pills because he wanted to get better.
Red is rotting in the ground now thanks to the University of Illinois and Dr. Barbara Kitchell oncologist and her crew that treated him. They gave Red a one to two year prognosis after his exam and he only lived two months and two days.
Reds cancer was the most treatable kind and it was caught very early. What the hell happened? We were planing a great summer for Red. We spent 3000.00 in these two months and what the hell for. We went to this University with our hearts in our hand and trusted these doctors and what they said and all they did was take our money and rob our Red of his precious remission time. Had we not treated Red he would have lived 3 to 6 months or longer and again I ask, what did we spend 3000.00 for? When you read Reds story you will see the lousy care and problems Red had at this University and it is all documented on our receipts. Dr. Kitchell and the University tried to convince us Reds cancer was a very bad kind later on in his treatments, but this was after they already made several bad errors. If Dr. Kitchell is so good and Reds cancer was so bad why didn't they tell us this at first? They made mistakes but they would not admit them. Instead of being honest and telling us they screwed up so we could go elsewhere or take Red home and make him comfortable they just kept torturing Red with their terrible treatments. Poor Red was caught in the middle. They told us he would live one to two years and then they screwed him up and they knew it but they would not tell us. This is the part that I will never forgive them for. They did not have any compassion for Red at all. Had we known Red had only two months to live we would have never put him through this misery. No one would do this to a member of their family.
After other doctors have reviewed Reds records we can see where Dr. Kitchell made poor decisions in her judgement about Reds treatments. My poor Red suffered at the hands of click here>Dr. Barbara Kitchell. Her absence on Reds follow-up second treatment is a very big part of why Red is not here. During Reds treatments we were always told he was going to be fine, he looks great, he's in remission, and this is all clearly documented.
The people in charge and the doctors at this University were arrogant during Reds treatment they only returned a few of our many phone calls while Red was under their care. For some reason Dr. Kitchell thought she could tell us anything and we would believe her. Dr. Kitchell got Reds cancer into remission but because of her negligence and absence she did not keep him there and this proved to be a fatal error on her part for our Red. When Dr. Kitchell would not return our many calls we were forced to drive to the University. Dr. Kitchell gave us appointments but we could never make it to the next one as Red would get sick in between from her improper care. Reds lymphoma was the most treatable kind and in some cases curable but the treatments must be done correctly. Instead of studying the type of lymphoma and drug choice as it should be Dr. Kitchell apparently has a set plan she uses on all dogs to fight the cancer. This is clearly wrong. The cancer must be carefully studied with biopsys and proper technics, each dog, each case, and each cancer is different. Dr. Kitchell made a very poor choice in Reds treatment technics and Red paid the price. She should have taken the time to study Reds cancer and chose the proper drugs carefully. Next she should have been there to watch Red carefully to be sure the drugs were working properly and their were no side effects. Then if their were side effects the drug could be changed or altered in someway. We paid good money and were told Red would get excellent care. As you read Reds story you will see Dr. Kitchell did not approach Reds cancer with proper procedures at all which wore Red down and took his life early in his treatments. Red did not get the type of treatment we were promised by Dr. Kitchell. What really tears us up is we could have had Red another two years or longer had we went elsewhere. Why didn't she treat Red as she promised she would? Had we not treated Red at all he would have lived much much longer. Dr. Kitchell does not give a damn about animals she proved that the way she treated Red especially not being there for Reds second most important check-up to see if the chemo drugs were working properly. How could she do this to Red and us after promising us good care. When Red died Dr. Kitchell said Reds lymphoma was a tough kind. Well now we know it was just her negligence, lack of concern, abscence, and poor care. We think its quite strange there is nothing documented on our receipts about Red getting worse until after her failed sloppy surgery and lymp node mess. This clearly points out what really happened. There was dissention throughout this University and Red got caught in the middle. What a lousy doctor and person Dr. Kitchell is to promise us Red would get the best of care and then after her failed procedures just let Red die. We could have went anywhere else and we would have if Dr. Kitchell would have been honest.
When Red started chemotherapy we really knew
nothing about cancer and were at the mercy of these doctors. I read many books on the subject and studied every day. The internet is a good place to start looking also. After Red died in only two short months when his prognosis was one to two years we were devastated. My wife was very upset and had a nervous breakdown. I hope anyone reading this can understand what we went through. We had a healthy five year old dog we cared for very much. This was not some dog that was tied out back on a chain, we had planned to have Red for many many more years. He was a member of the family and went everywhere with us. We sure know the University does not understand this at all. We noticed two lumps under Reds neck, thats all, otherwise he was the same as always. We took him to our veterinarian and we were shocked to learn it might be a life threatening cancer. Our own vet said Red would live 3 to 6 months if we did not do big chemo. Then we learned if Red had this cancer it was the most treatable kind and in some cases curable. We were very relieved and we wanted the best care regardless of price. Next we found the outlook with proper treatment was one to two years. Wow this was great. We were talking to other people on the internet whose dogs were being treated for the cancer like Red had but with a far worse prognosis and they were still alive even after a year or more. Doberman pinschers have short coats and any lumps are easily seen. so most cancers are caught early as Reds was.
What happened to Dr. Kitchells one to two year prognosis. This was not just Dr. Kitchells prognosis. Reds cancer was caught early and the other treatment centers we called gave us the same one to two years. Our treatments were not inexpensive and Red only lived two months. Had we done nothing Red would still be here. If we could have just had the summer with Red, but only two short months we are very upset. Dr. Kitchell said Reds cancer was a tough kind but we had doubts about Dr. Kitchell from the start. She would tell us a different story every week. After talking to other doctors and letting them review our records I now see why our Red died in only two months. We chose the worse place we could have for Reds treatments but it was Dr. Kitchells false statments that took us there. This was the worse experience we have ever had and possibly one of the worse experiences we will ever have in our lives. We have
never dealt with veterinarians that have no fellings for the animals they treat or the owners.
Our Attorney sent the University a letter and asked them for an explanation as to why Red died so early on in the treatments and they had 30 days to respond and they did nothing. Next we asked them to produce all of Reds treatment records because with all that went on we feel that the lymph node they took (as you will learn later) may have not been destroyed, we feel it showed something else besides the lymphoma. Again they did nothing.
We filed a claim click here>"Dirty Reds" Lawsuit against the University because this is the way the State of Illinois has it set up. I guess there must be a waiting line. It costs alot of money to sue this way, because of expert witnesses and attorney fees. I now see what Dr. Troutt meant as he laughed and told us it would take two years to get our money. Dr. Trott has no business breathing the same air as the animals in the hospital. I have sent a report to the License Enforcement Division in Chicago Illinois and they are doing an investigation. I have also sent a report and my records to Dr. Bromwell at the Humane Society of Illinois about the treatment of Red while at the University. Another report was sent to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine where Dr. Kitchell is a member and we really pointed out the absence of Dr. Kitchell during Reds critical treatments after promising us the best of care. We also showed that she treated Red without a biopsy report. If you would like to hear the whole story of my dog Reds treatment at this University read below.
Dr. Kitchell told us Red would get the very best of care but she sure could not deliver it.
We wanted the very best for our Redman. We got the very worse. "Dirty Reds Story"
If you do not understand what lymphoma is scroll
down to the end of this article, read the short description and return.
On 4/6/97 I noticed two lumps under Reds neck.
On 4/7/97 I took Red to my veterinarian. He said it looked like lymphoma and said I should take Red to the University of Illinois for the diagnostic work. I called a program on TV called Ask The Veterinarian and talked to Dr. Rob Hess about the lymphoma Red may have and he said to take Red to the University of Wisconsin at Madison Wis. for Reds chemo treatments, he said they had a one to two year survival rate and they were very good.
On 4/8/97 we got up early and made the 168 mile drive to the University of Illinois for Reds diagnostic work and exam. We arrived and were greeted by Dr. Barbara Kitchell and she examined Red and said it was lymphoma but we caught it early and it was not in any of Reds vital organs. I told her we were going to take Red to Madison for the treatments and she said she was better qualified and could do the same treatments. She also said David Vail has alot of the dogs he treats in intensive care and they are always sick because he takes the dogs to the limit with the chemo drugs. David Vail is the oncologist at Madison. Dr. Kitchell then said she has 5 years more training than most oncologists. She really bragged about herself. I told her Red had a one to two year survival rate if we treated him at Madison and she said her prognosis was the same one to two years. We liked the same one to two year survival rate for Red so we decided to let Dr. Kitchell treat him. I also asked her if she was going to take a whole lymph node for biopsy as at Madison and she said yes. We took Red home and the next morning drove back to the University for Reds biopsy and first chemo treatment.
On 4/9/97 we arrived at the University early and
signed the surgery papers and Dr. Kitchell told us Red was to have an excisional biopsy, surgery to remove a lymph node to see what type of lymphoma it was. We picked up Red later that day but Dr. Kitchell did not do surgery instead she did a needle biopsy and gave Red his first chemo treatment. We asked her about the surgery and why she did not take a whole lymph node and she said not to worry Red would be fine. She told us the first few chemo treatments were very crucial as to how Reds cancer reacts to the chemo so be sure and watch Red and have him here next week. In a few days Reds lymph nodes went down. Now we have learned Dr. Kitchell treated Red with powerful chemo drugs without the benefit and expertise of a proper Histopath report. Red was biopsied and treated with chemo on 4/9/97. The Histopath report was not verbal until 4/10/97.
Read the report the bottom when the veterinarian was contacted and the comments. This histopath wants more samples but Dr. Kitchell has already treated Red the day before with powerful chemo drugs. This is just one of the many many unprofessional way they did things at this University.
On 4/16/97 we returned to the University for Reds second most important follow-up and chemo treatment. We were greeted by Dr. Biller. Dr. Kitchell was out of town. We asked if Dr. Biller was an oncologist and she said yes later we found out differently, she was an intern and also she had just returned from maternity leave. She supposedly treated Red with chemo drugs the exact same drugs Dr. Kitchell treated Red with the week before. Three days later Reds lymph nodes enlarged.
Dr. Kitchell should have been there for this most important follow-up and second treatment as the drugs needed changing or adjusting and Dr. Biller apparently did not have the expertise to see this at this critical time. I now have learned Red was in trouble but not because of his cancer but because of Dr. Kitchells negligence and absence. When Dr. Biller examined Red he was in partial remission from his first treatment. This meant the first treatment killed 50% of the cancer cells and 50% of the normal cells Not Good. Dr. Biller gave Red the exact same drugs in the second treatment. What a mistake? This second treatment killed Reds normal cells and 0% of the cancer cells. How stupid a mistake. This brought Red out of remission and this was very bad.
On 4/21/97 we took Red back to the University and left him overnight as they were to decide what to do.
On 4/22/97 Dr. Kitchell treated Red with
adriamycin. I was still upset that Red had failed his second chemo and confronted Dr. Kitchell. I blamed it on her for not being there for Reds crucial follow-up exam and second chemo as she said it was very important. I told her I did not think Red even had the second treatment because we left the school that day at noon and three days later his lymp nodes enlarged. The first treatment took all day. Dr. Kitchell could not comment because she was not there for Reds second treatment so she knew nothing about it. Now we have learned you get about two trys to get a dogs lymphoma into remission and you must keep it there. Remission is a hault to the cancer and all its symptoms. The first remission on Red should have been about a year at best some dogs have less time three to six months for there first remission, but remember Reds prognosis was one to two years as stated by Dr. Kitchell. When the dog comes out of remission at about a year or whatever a second remission is usually achived for about half of the time as the first remission. Reds first remission according to this was 10 days but Dr. Kitchell never told us he was in trouble had she done this she would have had to admit a screw-up in Reds early second treatment. Our records show Red is doing great. Isn't this deceit?
Reds first chemo treatment took all day and Dr. Kitchell told us to plan to be there all day for Reds second treatment too. We took Red home at 1:30 after Dr. Billers supposedly second treatment. Did Dr. Biller really give Red this second treatment?
Why did we even have Dr. Biller an intern for Reds most crucial second follow-up and treatment. When we first took Red to the University Dr. Kitchell said Red would get the best of care. Does this sound like the best of care. We paid alot of money for Reds treatments. The first treatment was 348.00 and Dr. Billers second was 378.00 and we should have had a trained oncologist as promised at least until Reds cancer was under control.
On 4/23/97 I took Red to another doctor for a second opinion and he said to take Red off the cytoxan pills. He said Red was on the cytoxan pills the first two weeks of chemo and failed, this proved the cytoxan pills did not work and if Red stayed on them he would be urinating blood soon, or worse they would damage his kidneys and they were only killing Reds good cells. We tried to contact Dr. Kitchell several times about the cytoxan pills but could never reach her. This also was a problem at this University we could never talk to Dr. Kitchell when Red had a problem, they always said she was busy or gone and she only returned our calls a few times while Red was under her care. One time we called and they told us: When Red was here we treated him, today we have other patients. Then another time we called after failing to reach Dr. Kitchell we were transfered to Dr. Parker and he told us, No wonder you can not talk to a doctor there is only one doctor for every thirty patients. We kept Red on the cytoxan pills as this was Dr. Kitchells call.
On 4/29/97 we returned to the University and Dr. Kitchell examined Red and said his cancer was in remission. She said come back in two weeks for Reds second adriamycin treatment. We now believe Dr. Kitchell was going out of town for the next two weeks. Since she is the only oncologist and Reds second treatment was screwed up by an intern she wanted to treat Red herself. If this is true this is terrible making Red wait 2 weeks when he should have been seen weekly. We will know more about this when we get the records we requested and check her work period for the month of April. We have learned this was some sort of a rescue technic this adriamycin every three weeks and other doctors said Red was not in need of rescue this early on in his treatment. He just needed to be put into remission and kept there. Red should have been seen weekly or had special treatment until he was in remission.
On 5/7/97 early in the morning we called the University and wanted to talk to Dr. Kitchell as Red was urinating blood just like the second opinion doctor said he would. After several attempts to reach her we took Red to an emergency hospital here and later our Red was diagnosed with sterile cystitis from the cytoxan pills. In the morning we took Red to the University and Dr. Kitchell took Red off the cytoxan pills. Now Red developed another problem he was drinking very very large amounts of water and urinating for 2 - 3 minutes. He would drink a litre and a half of water then go outside and urinate come back in drink a litre and a half of water and a half hour later repeat the process. Red was up all night every night and we were too.
On 5/13/97 we took Red to the University for his second adriamycin treatment. Dr. Kitchell took my wife and I in a room and told us the next step was to take a lymph node from Reds leg and send it off to Rhode Island and have it tested to see if there was a better drug to fight Reds cancer. Also she said they or she would make a vaccine from Reds lymph node and inject it back into Red to help his immune system fight the cancer. I asked her why this lymph node was not taken as was scheduled on our first visit when Red was physically ok. She acted absent minded and really did not answer the question at all. I was worried about Red. How could he have surgery in his condition he had not had a full nights sleep for a week the most he had was an hour or so between urinating and drinking water. She said the surgery was minor and Red would be fine. This surgery cost 1500.00.
We left Red at the University and we were told we could pick him up the next day. They would do the surgery in the morning send the lymph node off and we could pick up Red in the afternoon.
On 5/14/97 we called the school and were told Red was not doing well he was not waking up from the surgery. Later we found out Reds kidneys were damaged from the chemo drugs and your kidneys remove the anesthetic from your system and Red was slow to awake because of this. We were told to pick up Red the next day. Other doctors have told us Red should not have had this surgery in his condition also the main objective was to keep Red in remission this surgery did nothing to accomplish this. We now can see what it did accomplish it gave the University 1500.00 of our money. Also if Reds kidneys could not remove the anesthetic why
were they giving him chemo drugs?
On 5/15/97 we picked up Red he was slobbering out the side of his mouth and his face was swollen on one side. Reds gums were white. That night when we went for our walk Red could not make it a block when we always walked two miles. Sadly this turned out to be Reds last walk. Red was never the same after this surgery.
On 5/19/97 we called the University to find out the test results and to know which drug would be best to fight Reds cancer. Dr. Kitchell was unavailable.
On 5/20/97 we called again and Dr. Trott told us the lymph node was destroyed when the testing facility received it. Red went thru this surgery that almost killed him for nothing. We were never told this was even a possibility that the lymph node could be destroyed. We asked him what we should do next and he said it was up to Dr. Kitchell. We tried to contact Dr. Kitchell but she was out of town for the Memorial day weekend. Poor Red had no medication and when we called the University they said we had to talk to Dr. Kitchell. What a poorly run University we had taken our dog to. Dr. Kitchell should have called us no matter where she was. Also now we have found out the vaccine they were going to make out of Reds lymph node, if the vaccine would have worked Red would have made history. Red would have been the first dog it would have ever worked on. We were never told this at all. What deceit.
The Tuesday after Memorial day Dr. Kitchell called us to see how Red was doing and I told her what I thought about her so called doctoring. This was
the last time we saw Dr. Kitchell. Can you believe it after telling us she was the best and then screwing up everything she did to Red, and now she has abandoned him.
On 6/2/97 Red was getting worse I thought he needed blood so I took him back to the University and they gave him more chemo. I tried to take Red to other doctors here but they said to take him back to the University after they heard the horrible story and what the University had done. Red was seen by another doctor this day as Dr. Kitchell did not have the decency or guts to face my wife and I. This just proves the kind of doctor she is. Dr. Ravi saw Red this day and on our receipt he wrote what should have been written on our receipts immediately after the surgery and lymph node mess he stated Red was getting worse. Well I guess so after the failed surgery and lymph node mess and all the Universitys plain screw-ups. Red was worse but I really do not believe it was the lymphoma.
On 6/5/97 I returned to the University and again Dr. Kitchell was unavalible. Can you believe they gave Red more chemo, they did what they called a MOPP rescue protocol, but they only gave Red two of the four drugs. Mustargen and vincristine Red did not get the procarbazine the only drug his cancer had not seen. The other doctors that have reviewed Reds records have said Reds blood work does not show a need for a rescue protocol. What is going on here? Did Red need intensive care and blood?
On 6/10/97 at 6:45 am what I had tried so hard to prevent happened Red passed away in my arms with my local veterinarian on the phone something my family and I will never forget. Red died just two months and two days after his first treatment began at this University. Red was 5 years and six months old to the day. What happened to the one to two year prognosis. We have always dealt with honest veterinarians we could not believe it. Also we have learned the day after Reds surgery Dr. Kitchell gave Red a drug called CCNU or lomustine a powerful chemo drug and another drug could not be used for three weeks as this CCNU supresses the bone marrow. What is Dr. Kitchell doing here, if the report from Rhode Island would have indicated a drug to better fight the cancer Red could not have had it on top of the CCNU. Our Red was treated at this University by the worse doctors of animals I have ever seen. We were completely misled by Dr. Kitchell through this whole ordeal. We could have went to Madison and Red would still be here. We could have went to a much better equiped University of Missouri that has a new laser beam treatment to fight cancer. We could have not treated Red at all and he would still be here. We asked the University for our money back for the surgery and lymph node mess and they said no. I called Dean Vallie and told him what happened and he said he would call me back and he did not. We have taken legal action against this University for killing our Red. My Red had the most treatable kind of cancer in some cases curable. Their are dogs that have been in remission for over a year with proper treatment. We have found one lady that took her dog to the University of Illinois and on the first chemo treatment they gave her dog CCNU a rescue drug, it did nothing for the dogs cancer except it almost killed the dog. After that she went to another doctor and her dog is still alive today and he was diagnosed long before Red. Another lady started chemo and took her dog off because it made the dog sick and the dog lived 4 more years.
Three doctors reviewed Reds case and said like any sick person Red should have been signed into the hospital ICU (intensive care unit) on 6/2/97 when we had him there. Then on 6/5/97 we drove their again and they had another chance but they chose to give Red a rescue chemo treatment when his blood work indicated he did not need it. This is just terrible. All three doctors agreed Red should have been put in the Intensive Care Unit as IV fluids can do wonders for an ill feeling animal and if Red started to deteriorate the situation could be brought under control quite rapidly. Intensive care and cancer treatment go hand and hand most dogs that get chemo treatments have a few crisis along the way and need intensive care. The University and Dr. Kitchell should bare the responsibility for Reds early death as it was nothing but their terrible treatment and poor judgement that caused it.
The Attorney General will be working for the University. Can you believe it, the Attorney General is supposed to wipe out fraud and deceit and he is backing up the most deceitful people I have ever been involved with.
I tried to reason with the University I asked them this:
If Dr. Kitchells dog or child had lymphoma do you think she would have let a doctor treat him with powerful chemo drugs without the benefit of a proper biopsy report knowing if the drugs were not correct the patient was doomed. I Think not. Then what do you think Dr. Kitchell would do if when she returned with her child for the most important second chemo treatment and follow-up to see if the drugs were working and she had discovered the oncologist treating her child is out of town. Now three days later the lymphoma comes back
and she discovers an intern gave her child this most important check-up and second chemo treatment. Would she be upset? Would you? I think so. What do you think Dr. Kitchell would do if someone did surgery on her child or dog when they were in a weakened state and they almost died. Then when she was waiting for the all important results from the surgery she found out they had been destroyed. Then the most terrible thing possible happens the child dies in your arms at home.
Dean Vallie, Dr. Troutt and Dr. Kitchell still don't get it. If they do not have the common sense to see it this way they have no business teaching young veterinarians. My Red was very important to my wife and I and he should have had every opportunity to get better. This hospital and its doctors did not follow standard every day procedures if they would have Red would still be here. We paid good money for proper treatment for our dog Red and we never got it. My poor sweet boy Red never had a chance. How many other animals and people have suffered and will suffer as our Red did from this Universitys terrible care.
When Red was diagnosed with lymphoma, we wanted the best treatment possible so if he did die we would know in our hearts everything possible was done for him. We now will feel miserable forever because our Red was just plain left to die by this Universitys failed procedures. When a biopsy report is not studied first before any treatments have begun, then surgery is done when the patient is weak and the samples taken during surgery are lost and the patient dies, and the Dean of the school says nothing is wrong I say he is wrong along with Dr. Kitchell, Dr. Parker, Dr. Troutt and anyone else that allows this kind of deceit
and dissension to exhist.
sincerely, Jack Austin

What is lymphoma? What is chemotherapy?
If Red had lymphoma (we are not even sure yet
that should tell you how terrible the doctors were at the University of Illinois)
Reds lymphoma was caught very early
Reds lymphoma was high grade they said
Reds lymphoma was the most treatable kind
Reds prognosis was 1 to 2 years
Money was no object.
Reds system was making normal cells like all dogs do. At some point in time Reds system started to produce cancer cells in addition to these normal cells. There are three kinds of lymphoma cancer classes high grade, intermediate grade and low grade. Red had the high grade and Dr. Kitchell would have us believe it was the worse kind. Not true. Low grade lymphoma is a slow growing cancer it grows at the same speed as the normal cells do in a dog. This is the worse kind when it comes to treatment. The problem is when a drug is used to attack it, the drug kills the normal cells at the same rate as the cancer cells, this is not good. All chemo drugs kill cancer cells and normal cells. The better the drug match, and the better the doctor, the better the results. Chemotherapy is the drugs that are used to fight the cancer cells.
High grade lymphoma on the other hand grows much faster than low grade lymphoma so the cancer cells act quite differently than normal cells. When you introduce and attack the cancer with the correct chemo drug in high grade lymphoma you can kill possibly 99% of the cancer cells and only 1% of the normal cells. This is great. With high grade lymphoma you can start to see that you could possibly kill 100% of the cancer cells and become cancer free if you were a great doctor and knew what drugs to use. This is where the biopsy comes in and identifys what type of lymphoma it is hi-grade, low-grade, t-cell, b-cell or whatever and the drugs are then matched. How could Dr.Kitchell possibly attack Reds cancer properly without a biopsy report. She was just guessing. Next you introduce these drugs into Reds system and you must watch them carefully from week to week to see what % of cancer cells to good cells you are destroying. Also what works one week may not work the next. Why? because these cancer cells quite easily become resistant to the drugs. How do you solve this? One way is to give a protocol that uses a different drug each week. This is what you pay a trained oncologist for, they are supposed to know how to fight cancer and you should not need to learn this. But really the only way to tell what is going on is to watch the effect the drugs have on the cancer week to week. What the doctor is trying to accomplish is a remission which is a hault to the cancer and its symptoms and then a plan or protocol to keep it in remission for as long as possible . A protocol is a proven plan to fight the cancer. But first the cancer must be put into remission. Once a dog is in remission it must stay in remission. Dr. Kitchells absence two critical times during Reds first few treatments is what got Red into serious trouble. She tried to have us believe it was the cancer but we know better now. Sure their are dogs that do not respond to chemo. In a survey done at Madison Wis. on 168 dogs only two failed to respond to the chemo drugs. Dr. Kitchell would have us believe Red was in this group. Not So! Red did respond to the chemo drugs as documented on our receipts. It was Dr. Kitchells improper technics, absence and negligence that kept Red from staying in remission. If you did a survey on the dogs Dr. Kitchell treats the failure rate would be much much higher than Madison because of her improper technics. Dr. Kitchell still uses prednisone in her treatments even though it has been found recently that prednisone can cause a pump effect and actually keep the cancer drugs from working. Dr. Kitchell also uses the same drugs each week even though it has been proven the cancer can grow a resistance to the drugs quite fast. Dr. Kitchell thinks she can get away with this because she thinks nobody understands cancer but her. She is wrong again. When someone cares as we did about our dog Red and we were told over and over by her not to worry he would be ok and then he dies we want to know why. We will pay other cancer doctors to show us why Red is gone and exactly what Dr. Kitchell did wrong. Now when you read the above description of how Dr. Kitchell treated Red for his lymphoma you will understand why he is gone. We wish she would have been honest and told us she would not be there each appointment for Red so we could have went to Madison Wis. Had she been honest and told us this we would have never let her touch our precious Red. We feel she could sense this because she could see we were wild about getting Red better. I was very sincere when I took Red to this University they knew we were very serious and all they did was take our money, laugh at us, and kill our Red. We do not have a very high opinion of this University, Dr. Kitchell or Dean Vallie.
(scroll back to the start of the treatments)
After the failed surgery and lymphnode mess Reds condition was much much worse. We returned to the University on 6/2/97 and again on 6/5/97 why didn't they check Red into the hospital? If I was this sick I know my hospital would have taken me in.
What is proper treatment? What should have been done?
Red should have had surgery to remove the lymph node the first day of his tests as was agreed to and we signed for them to do this. The node then should have been studied by a Histopath specialist and Dr. Kitchell should have gotten a report as to what kind of lymphoma it was. B-cell T-cell or whatever. Then Dr. Kitchell could have started Red on the proper protocol. There really was no hurry here. Next Dr. Kitchell should have been at the University the second week of Reds treatment to examine Red and to see if the chemo drugs were working properly and if not they could have been adjusted or changed. Then according to Dr. Kitchells prognosis in a year or so Red would come out of remission and next another remission would have been tried. This did not happen and as a result our Red paid the price and they should admit their mistakes.
What did we get for taking Red to the University of Illinois for treatment. NOTHING!
What did we get for spending 5000.00 for treatments and expenses. NOTHING!
What did we get for putting 4000 miles on our
car. NOTHING!
What did we get for believing Dr. Kitchells false statements about how good she was. NOTHING!
What did we get for believing Dr. Kitchell as she said she would take care of Red. NOTHING!
What did we get for letting them do minor surgery on Red, that almost killed him to remove a lymph node. NOTHING!
If Dr. Kitchell is so good that she can treat Red without a biopsy report then why was the report even taken. Also why did Dr. Kitchell need to send the lymph node off to have it tested why didn't she just test it herself? We believe any person with common sense reading Reds Story can see the whats going on at this University.
We spent over 5000.00 to slowly kill Red in two months and two days. We put over 4000 miles on our car. If they knew Red was this bad in the begining and they did not tell us then the Attorney General is on the wrong side.
Costs each visit and dealing with the University of Illinois Small Animal Hospital
We had to put a deposit down before they would treat our Red each time and every time. Even after we were going there for over a month we still had to put half of the money down. Once we over heard them telling a group of students who were to be on duty in the night emergency room They said to the students be sure and get the money first, a credit card a check or cash. No money no services!!!!!!!!! What kind of a place did we take our Red to. Money is definately the first thing on their mind at this University.
Although all the treatments below were flawed in some way. These are the most critical Receipts of mistakes that Red could not recover from.
Reds treatments:
4/8/97 Exam 289.75
4/9/97 First chemo treatment 310.14
4/10/97 biopsy report 27.45
4/16/97Second chemo treatment 348.37
4/22/97 Adriamycin treatment 320.69
4/29/97 Checkup 102.94
5/7/97 Checkup 170.00
5/13/--5/15/97 surgery and node mess 1251.41
6/2/97 Chemo treatment 153.18
6/5/97 Chemo treatment 130.70
There were many many other costs we incurred locally because of this Universitys terrible care to our Red.
I wanted to scan each actual receipt but when I
published the pages they were unclear.
What did Dr. Kitchell do wrong? Why does she get away with this. A better explanation.
When Red had surgery that Dr. Kitchell said was to be minor and he almost died, then the lymph node they took was ruined and they did nothing we just could not believe it. Red died two weeks after this failed surgery. We were very shocked and upset. When I talked to Dr. Trott to explain what had happened and how Dr. Kitchell had misled us
he would not do a thing and we thought he just did not understand cancer. He eventually argreed to give us the 600.00 back for the vaccine Red never got, but as you can see he still doesn't get it. This is one major reason why Red is gone because he never got the vaccine. This vaccine is part of the regular treatment at Madison Wis. and Red was supposed to get this even if it failed. I wanted my money back from the surgery too I was upset because I did not want Red to have this surgery in the first place in his condition but Dr. Kitchell said it would be ok. Then after talking to Dean Vallie and he did nothing we decided to have other doctors review Reds case. Then we learned all the real reasons why Red died so early on in his treatments. Cancer and its treatments are hard to understand at first and its easy for Dr. Kitchell to fool the students she teaches and the people that bring their dogs to her for treatment. At first we thought Dr.Trott and Dean Vallie were fooled also by Dr. Kitchell, but now we know that if they reviewed Reds case as they said they did they had to see the errors. When Reds node was lost with all the secrets it may have held that would have helped Red to get better, that was the last straw. Had these errors not have happened all would be ok but they did happen and they are documented. How can they still believe they did nothing wrong? Now you see why it is so easy for Dr. Kitchell to tell anyone if their dog dies that it was just a bad cancer when it really may have been her neglect as with our Red.
Ordinary people like myself just do not understand and they believe in their doctor. Also after they have spent a fortune for their dogs treatments and the dog dies early they may not want to pursue legal action especially the way the State of Illinois has it set up. If you could sue the University in small claims court you could do it for under 100.00 and believe me this is where it should be handled. For us to sue the University it has cost us so far 800.00 for attorneys fees and 1400.00 for expert witness doctors with more to follow. I must have an expert witness to testify in front of the judge so the judge will understand as any judge would be easily fooled by Dr. Kitchells remarks or for that matter any doctors statements about cancer treatment as it is hard to understand.
These doctors made mistakes that clearly could have been avoided but they would not admit them. We will always wonder, What if the lymph node taken would have been tested and not ruined? What If Dr. Kitchell would have been there for Reds second treatment and changed the drugs. This surgery mess was totally the Universitys fault not ours. Dr.Kitchell lied when she told us Red would get the best of care and then was absent for Reds most important second check-up and treatment. Dr. Kitchell lied when she said Illinois University was as good as Madison where 4 oncologists can be found. If the Court of Claims allows Dr. Kitchell and the University to get away with these mistakes that took our Reds life when they are clearly documented on our receipts then they are at fault also and this type of incorrect treatment will continue at this University.
All statements above on this WEB page are the truth and are clearly backed up by actual receipts of what actually happened. Any removal of this WEB page by A.O.L. or any other person will be met aggressively with a proper lawsuit.
About the Pet Care Forum on AOL.
We got very bad advice from the Pet Care Forum when Red was being treated for his cancer. We also got some good advice and I guess it depends on the vet that answers your post. The Pet Care Forum will stand up for other veterinarians no matter if the other vet is wrong. They believe no vet can make a mistake and will never admit a mistake. Heres the way I see it. If you are a bus driver and you stay up late one night or get drunk and then go to work and have an accident you could possibly go to jail. If you are a policeman and you shoot a kid that has no gun you are in deep trouble. On the other hand a vet or a doctor can stay up late, get drunk, be sloppy and if they kill someone or don't give proper care or make a mistake they just say medicine is not an exact science and everything is supposed to be ok. NOT
SO! This is clearly wrong. If your pet dies and you don't think it should have get an autopsy and be sure it is from a different sorce. Also on the Pet Care Forum I have tried to correct a few mistakes
made by the vets and even though I am right they won't admit it and they removed my posts. This should tell you something immediately. Remember check out all advice from any doctor or vet before you use it regardless of who they are. Once your pet is gone from mistakes as our Red is you will feel very bad forever even though you thought you were doing the right thing at the time. The best way to learn about cancer and its treatments is to read about it and understand it yourself but we just did not have enough time. If Red got cancer today with what I have learned since April I know he would be a survivor for a long time.
