I am a veteran of World War II. I served in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 3rd Infanty Division and was wounded by 2 German hand grenades and captured on March 15, 1945 in Utweiler, Germany near the Rhine River.
I was contacted by Bob Cook who was in F Company and was captured on the same day. If it wasn't for him and Earl Reitan who wrote "Disaster at Utweiler" (the truth of what happened to the 2nd Battalion) I would still think the battle took place in France.
I have just finished writing my story about my memoies of World War II and have some pictures  to illustrate it. My wife convinced me to write it. Now that I finally made contact with former members of my regiment I have been able to add more information to it.
I am now retired and presently an avid player AT golf. I really enjoy the game and look forward to playing at least three times a week. My lowest score was 73 but that was a little while ago. I hope to one day make a hole in one but I won't be too disappointed if I don't get one.
I am mostly interested in exploring all phases of the net but my wife is greatly interested in crafts and art and cooking interests. I try to keep up with the space operations (the shuttle and pictures taken by the Hubble telescope) and browse there a good bit.
I also enjoy "talking" to people withe the instant message feature on AOL. I have a substantial "buddy" list and hope to add others to it.
I have been putting out feelers with different veteran organizations trying to get in touch with other veterans I served with in the 3rd Infantry Division It finally paid off when I was contacted by Bob Cook who was in F Company.
I was lucky enough to find Rich Heller's site. He has the history of the 3rd Infantry Division and quite a collection of pictures his father Bill Heller took when he was official photographer for the division.I highly recommend it to all veterans as it tells it like it was. Rich Hellerdid one terrific job telling the story with pictures and the writings on the back of them. He has created quite a tribute to his father.
I played football, baseball and basketball in high school and some independent football after I got out of the Army. I have taken a liking to playing golf. I was one of the biggest critics "Those darn fools hit the ball and soon as they find it they hit it again." But one day my two oldest sons talked me into play a game. I like it so much that I took a week's vacation and walked 36 holes each day for a week playing. I really got hooked. Now that I retired I try and play at least three times a week. BUT my biggest hobby is my computer. I spend a lot of time on it and believe there isn't much that you can't do on it.
I worked 39 years in the Composing Room of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and still look forward to reading it every morning at breakfast but I am disappointed in how the quality has changed.
I don't care for the new style they have gone to. They have taken away the indent paragraphs at the beginning of some stories and I think it takes away from it. I hope they wise up and go back to the attractive style they had in the past. When I worked there we had everything proofread and doublecheked and they took pride in putting out a quality newspaper. I guess nothing lasts forever.
But again golf is what I really look forward to. I am thankful that I am still able to play a fairly decent golf game. I thank the Lord for everything He has given me.
