After searching for a nice Scorpio for almost two years, I finally found one. The used car dealer just got it in. About a week later he called and said it was ready for inspection. It had about 106k miles, American Racing wheels, Dunlop D60 A2 tires, KYB struts and shocks, only one key, a new battery and seats that didn't always work.
Improving A Good Thing
As we enter this new year, my car has about 170k miles. Looking back it has not been a bad experience. In ’96 the transmission required a total rebuild. That was at about 120k. The water pump couldn’t last any longer than 130k before giving up. About that time the exhaust pipe rotted through. The muffler leaned over to the right and melted part of the rear valance. At that time I decided to go with a DynoMax Ultra Flo muffler. A few months later the right front caliper seized so I ordered a loaded one from Rapido. In ’98 I ran across complete non-running car in the classifieds. I was the first one to show up and he had several calls while we were making the deal. Now it’s mine. A 1988 with cloth interior, no computer but with moonroof. The body is VERY straight but it’s recent paint is peeling. The guy drove it for 3 months before it blew a head gasket. He started to work on it but he already had 3 project cars and a neglected family. His loss, my gain. Already I have swapped out the perfect dash complete with the rubber tray liner, cargo net, window switches and both front seat motors. In ’99, one of the catalytic converters got plugged. I decided to replace them with high-flow versions and relocate the muffler from the rear to where the front one used to be. Also, I changed to the new Fel-Pro blue silicon valve cover gaskets. They are worth the $45 they are asking for it. No more leaks. P/N VS50312T.
