Play Clay Faux Porcelain Dolls

Instructions here are for making simple shoulder plated faux porcelain dolls. The clay is made from baking soda. It has a slight offensive odor when you cook it. But then it dissapates.
The dolls are simply made. Tho no graphics .By looking thru some dolls book sand some doll magazines you can have an idea of what they are supposed to look like.. There is a link to the Arm and Hammer site, and another site that has other play clay recipies. I like the Arm and Hammer site the best.
To begin with you are going to need:
1- small box of arm and hammer baking soda
1 cup corn starch and a cup of hot water
a small pot.. that you are not going to use for food
a wooden spoon is best
a large plate and some plastic wrap and an old margerine or sealable container.
Follow the directions at the arm and hammer site to make your play clay.
then come back here to find the instructions on making the doll.

Instructions:
After kneading and cooling the clay,, your going to want to make the head. To start you will need to amke an under part or mould.
Take a toilet paper roll and flatten one side so that it rests on the table. then pinch the opposite side so that its not totally curved. To make sure you did it properly, when loking at the end of the tube, it should look like a curved triangle.

Make a small ball of tissue or paper towel and with tape glue to the center of the pinty part of the triangl. usually smack in the middle of the tube is best. This is the base for your head.

Now with smooth pieces of the clay cover the head and part of the shoulder area.Make it look like an oldfashioned shoulderplate doll head.place two holes at the bottom on the front and the back. this will help secure it to the body.
You can make coils or rolls or any hair style from the clay. Moisten the curve of the head lightly with water and press and smoothinto place the heairdo that you like.

Allow to dry by air 24 hours, or if you are in a hurry in an warm low temp oven. for five hours. Small cracks may appear and can be filled in with excess clay and air dried.

To make arms, roll play clay into logs and cut the length so that it looks in proportion to the head. Then gently flatten one end. the hand should be looking like a spoon. Make a groove at the other end so that there is a way for the thread and fabric to be cinched to the arm.

To do the legs, make a log the same way, but gently flatten the end and turn the end up. smooth so that the l shaped log looks like a leg. make a groove at the top like on the arm.

Next step.. Painting your pieces.
For legs arm and face. Use Parchement or a light fleshtone. as a base. allow to dry. Acrylic paints by Delta work best. For shoes.. use black. For eyes, use blue and rim in black, For cheeks and lips use a deep pink or mauve.
To make sure the colors dont fade and it has aporcelain feel. Use Delta Ceramacoat Glaze in MATTE. For a China doll look use GLOSS

to make the body...
Take a tube of fabric wider than your shoulder plate. stitch the back. and stitch one end of the tube closed. stuff.

make four smaller tubes. One for each appendage.
Turn tube inside out and slide down the appendage. with thread secure the tube to the groove or indentation on the arm. turn rightside out.. and stuff.
To set legs on body, stuff and turn the legs so the toes are pointing forward. INsert legs into opening of body tube and Turn raw edges of body under and pin in place. Stab stitch the legs in place.
To do the arms. stuff and turn tube top raw edged under and stitch closed.
Place very edge of arm top under shoulder plate and stab stitch in place.
Now your doll is ready to be dressed.
