In Memory of Tango, a Dog Who Loved to Run

Jaci's Fandango JH

(Jaci's Kobo City x CH Swift River's Simmerin' Sadie JH)

Breeder:  Doug Phillips

Please take a moment to get to know a dog who was loved and is gone too soon.  He has been gone one year.

Tango was owned and cherished by Deb Duarte of Connecticut.  Deb and I first made contact on the internet and talked about Brittanys at length via e-mail.  She had a spayed Brittany.  One day, we decided to meet at a good halfway point in MA to run dogs.  Time passed and I had a stud puppy and offered him to Deb.

Tango won Best in Sweepstakes at the 1997 National Specialty when he was just seven months of age.  He grew to be a powerful young male, getting his Amateur Puppy and Derby points easily with his first time field trialer/owner Deb Duarte.  He looked good on foot or horseback.  As he grew bolder, he started bumping at the breakaway so his juvenile career was put on hold despite placements in open juvenile stakes.  Deb began working him towards broke performances with trainer Bill Aspinal.  Bill thought the dog was a natural on birds- intense and a quick learner.

Deb put some show points on him, novice owner-handled.  He needed to grow up a bit and, well, we thought What's the rush?  He's young and has plenty of time.  They started agility classes and were having fun.

Tango had beautiful, coltish legs and he knew how to use them.  He loved to run and Deb, like any good owner, loved to run him.  The couch potato life was not for Deb and Tango.  They went often, practically every day.

As Tango was a wide runner, Deb would often wonder if she was really hearing his bell or just imagining it, only to have the sound grow louder, flooding her with relief and confirming that he was out there, in front.  This time, however,  the sound would remain forever in her imagination.  Tango would not be returning.  Tragically, just a couple of months before his third birthday, he went too far too fast in a place he had been run many times and was killed by a car.  He was found dead a couple of miles through the woods from where he was last seen.

If Tango were a person, he'd have been a rebel, a barroom brawler, someone who always found trouble.  We do know that he was meant for another time, a time where there is more room to just be a dog that loved to run.
