Dave Lukoski has been named the first recipient of the Ripon School District Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes outstanding graduates of Ripon High School who have excelled in career and/or community service efforts. Dave has served on the Ripon Police Department for 30 years, the last 17 years as police chief. He is in his 10th year of coaching Little League, helped form Ripon Youth Football, and is an assistant coach for this year's American Legion baseball team (Source: Ripon Commonwealth Press, July 15, 2004).
Congratulations, Dave, on a well-deserved honor!! You've done the RHS Class of 1973 proud!!

Debbie (Bonsen) Coolidge (Mesquite, TX) was in Chicago for a business meeting in early May and got to attend a Cubs game at historic Wrigley Field. The thrill of the night was watching Sammy Sosa hit a home run late in the game. After the game, Debbie's group went to a reggae bar called the Wild Hare and Debbie ended up on stage singing reggae!
Tom Burling (Markesan) is pictured with his three-year old son, Jacob, sliding down the Riponfest carnival slide on the front page of the July 15 issue of the Ripon Commonwealth Press.
Cyril Daddieh (Cranston, Rhode Island), Director of Black Studies at Providence College, will be on sabbatical to Ghana for the 2004-2005 school year. He plans to leave at the end of first week of August with his son, Charles. Cyril's wife, Vickie, and the rest of family, including Vickie's mom, will follow two weeks later.
A childhood photo of Rick Ehrenberg (Ripon) under the headline "Ain't It Nifty, Rick is Fifty" appeared in the July 1 issue of the Ripon Commonwealth Press. Happy birthday to Rick!
Ken Gitzel, older brother of Dave Gitzel (Ripon), has retired from the Ripon School District after 34 years as an elementary teacher (RCP, June 17, 2004).
Carol (Neitzke) Martin (Clarksville, Tennessee) recently changed jobs. She is an information technology specialist at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Carol's new email address is: carol.martin@se.amedd.army.mil
In April, Carol chaperoned her son Josh's 74-member high school band to the Music in the Parks Concert Festival in New Orleans. This was a national competition with bands from five states. Josh's band came in first in its class and first overall for concert bands. The students enjoyed side trips to Gulf Shores, Alabama; a Dixieland dinner cruise; and Six Flags.
Megan Paulson, daughter of Jeff and Paula Paulson, was crowned Miss Riponfest 2004 on July 9 at Barlow Park (RCP, July 15, 2004). Congratulations, Megan!!
Tricia Classen-Prellwitz, wife of Bob Prellwitz, owns Goodrich Home Furnishings in Berlin. The store had a grand opening on June 24 to celebrate a 2,500-square-foot addition (RCP, July 1, 2004).
Jeff Root (Fairfax, Virginia) was in Philadelphia for three days in late June. He visited Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross's house, the Benjamin Franklin Institute, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (where Sylvester Stallone climbed the outside steps in "Rocky"). Jeff also saw a Phillies game at their new stadium.
Jeff is teaching remedial reading and writing this summer to high school students who failed their Virginia standardized English tests.
Rob Schanke (Pueblo West, Colorado, but currently stationed in Kuwait) will be home on leave from August 9 to August 26. During his leave, the family will visit Rob's in-laws on the Missouri River near Helena, Montana; and drive son James back to the University of Idaho.
Teacher News
Lester Schwartz, retired Ripon College art professor, recently had a show of 35 acrylic portraits of colleagues that he painted after his retirement in 1977 (RCP, June 24, 2004). One subject was Ken Cartier, former Ripon College Vice President of Finance and father of Kerry Cartier (Waunakee).
Lester was a visiting art teacher in Nancy Heydon's 3rd grade class at Roosevelt Elementary during the 1963-1964 school year. Lester is now 92 years old and lives in a nursing home.
Graduations
Timothy Coolidge, son of Debbie (Bonsen) and Doug Coolidge (Mesquite, Texas), graduated from Metro Christian High School on May 22. Following graduation, the Coolidges hosted a graduation party with a nacho bar, lots of Dr. Pepper, and graduation cake. The next week, Tim, Debbie, and Doug (minus three-year old "not too happy" Vicki) went to New York City for a graduation trip. They toured all the usual sites - Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Times Square, the financial district (couldn't see anything after 9/11), Ground Zero, Greenwich Village, Central Park, Brooklyn, the United Nations, Grand Central Station, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chinatown, Little Italy, etc. They also saw a Yankees game and attended "The Lion King" on Broadway. After a great week, they returned home and Tim started college at Texas A&M - Commerce, taking his first of many computer courses. He's enrolled as a freshman with a major in Computer Science and Information Technology.
Stephanie Murphy, daughter of Anne (Schmitt) and Craig Murphy (Puyallup, Washington), graduated from Governor John R. Rogers High School on June 12.
In Remembrance
Ron Stracy (RHS '74), husband of Roxann (Berndt) Stracy (Ripon), died unexpectedly on July 6 (RCP, July 15, 2004).
Virginia Kuharske, mother of Charmaine (Kuharske) LaBelle (RHS '71, Mukwonago), passed away on May 21 (RCP, May 27, 2004).
