RHS Class of 1973 Alumni News
July 9, 2003

Amy Cartier, daughter of Kerry and Jennifer (Daehn) Cartier, graduated from Waunakee High School on June 2.  Amy will attend Edgewood College in Madison this fall. She will pursue a four-year degree in nursing.
Chad Cartier, Kerry and Jennifer's son, is a junior majoring in communications at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Chad played on the Point football team the past two years and was named Special Teams Player of the Year for 2002.

Cyril Daddieh is in Accra, the capital of Ghana.  He sends his regards to all classmates.  Cyril is sorry he can't be at the 30th Reunion in body, but promises to be there in spirit.  He had a nice conversation with Al Mortenson prior to leaving for Ghana on June 20.

Jeff Root (Fairfax, Virginia) started teaching summer school on July 2.  For the fourth time in the past five summers, he's working with elementary students who are behind grade level in reading and writing.  Summer school ends on August 1.
Jeff was extremely busy during the week of June 16.  On June 17, his brother, Rob, and his wife, Wanda, arrived from Colorado.  That evening, Jeff and Penny hosted a graduation party for their son, Andy.  The next day, the family saw Andy and 670 classmates graduate from Robinson High School.  On Thursday morning, Jeff arrived at the local recreation center at 4:00 A.M. to help clean up after the all-night graduation party.  That afternoon, he walked with 450 graduates at the Woodson High School graduation.  On Friday evening, a college roommate and his family from Racine visited.  Jeff and Penny took them to the neighborhood pool party, which they had helped organize.  On Saturday morning, Jeff served as a stroke and turn judge at daughter Hannah's swim meet.  That afternoon, he drove Hannah and her Girl Scout troop to Pennsylvania for an overnighter at a cave.  All this was happening while Jeff was wrapping up the final week of school and administering final exams to underclassmen.  Needless to say, Jeff was relieved to finish the school year!

Rob Schanke (Crawfordsville, Indiana) is the government's design manager at the Newport (Indiana) Chemical Depot, where they will soon begin the destruction of a large stockpile of VX nerve agent.  This summer, Rob will move to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to begin the next project in the program.  The next project is to destroy hundreds of thousands of artillery projectiles filled with mustard agent in Pueblo, Colorado.
Rob continues to serve in the Army Reserve/National Guard.  In March, he was alerted for Iraqi Freedom and went through the initial stages of mobilization.  His biggest worry was not going to Iraq but completing his masters before shipping out.  Fortunately for Rob, the deployment was canceled.  He managed to get his final thesis completed, submitted, and defended (in Boulder, CO) with one day to spare before exceeding the time allowed to complete the degree.
Rob regrets that he will not be able to attend the 30th Reunion.  In addition to moving to Colorado and settling into a new house this summer, he will be busy getting his son up to the University of Idaho and traveling to South Korea for a military exercise.

Adam Wood, son of Les Wood (Ripon), is engaged to marry Leslie Zabrowski.  Adam graduated from Ripon High School in 2001 and enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps.  Lance Cpl. Wood is stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he works on aviation life support systems. (Source:  Ripon Commonwealth Press, June 19, 2003).

Bernie's Italian Steakhouse, owned by Carla (Hunger) and Steve Berndt (Markesan), will sponsor the first Berniefest rock festival on August 8-9.  Bad Company, Foreigner, Head East, and several local bands will perform.  (Source:  RCP, May 29, 2003, and Candy Fitzwater).  Bernie's is located outside of Princeton, and was known as Barnekow's years ago.

The RHS Class of 1973 will be represented in the Riponfest Parade this weekend with a 1973 Mach 1 Mustang decorated with Class of '73 signs.  Steve Meyer (Ripon) is making arrangements.

30th Reunion News

The Ripon Commonwealth Press has scheduled a photographer to take a class photo at the 30th Reunion on August 9.  The photo is scheduled for 6:00 P.M., just before the beginning of dinner.  Thanks to Tim Lyke, RCP publisher, for his help and support.

The following teachers and their spouses have accepted invitations to attend the RHS Class of 1973 30th Reunion:

Keith and Bonnie Bartig
Allan and Mrs. Mortenson
Bruce and Marilyn Patrick
Cal and Jaye Reistad
Cal and Pat Schaub
David and Mary Jane Schanke
Gib and Karen Stoeberl

Nancy Heydon (Green Lake), retired Roosevelt third grade teacher, will not be able to attend the 30th Reunion because she'll be at a wedding in northern Wisconsin.  In her letter, Nancy mentioned that she attended an Elton John concert last month and was not the oldest person there!  She extends a big "hello" to the RHS Class of '73!!
