RHS Class of 1973 Alumni News

Robert Schanke, currently stationed in Kuwait, expects to return home to Pueblo, Colorado, by Christmas.
Rob's wife, Nancy, had successful surgery to remove her gall bladder on September 22. She spent the night in the hospital and returned home the next day. Nancy has had no complications.
Jeff Root (Fairfax, Virginia) attended the Green Bay Packer's' 28-14 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday at FedEx Field outside of Washington, DC. Jeff's group sat eight rows from the top of the upper deck in the corner of the end zone. The upper deck is steep, so every seat provides a great view. Prior to the game, the group had a tailgate party that was two cars away from the Wisconsin State Society tailgate party. Jeff had a great time!
Jeff attended the "Vote for Change" benefit concert at MCI Center in Washington, DC, on October 11. This concert brought together many of the artists who had performed in swing states over the prior two weeks to raise money for the Kerry campaign. Performers included Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Dixie Chicks, John Fogerty (founder of Credence Clearwater Revival), Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Pearl Jam, REM, and others. Jeff thought the highlight was John Fogerty joining Bruce Springsteen to sing CCR's "Fortunate Son," a strong anti-war song from the 1960s. The concert lasted from 7:00 P.M. to 12:20 A.M.
Jeff served as a poll watcher at his neighborhood polling site on Tuesday morning. From 6:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M., he marked off the names of registered Democrats as they voted. Later in the day, volunteers called Democrats who had not yet voted and encouraged them to vote.
Jeff's 6th grade daughter, Hannah, has switched from the baritone to the tuba. She did well with the baritone, but had some difficulty reaching the higher notes. The middle school band teacher clapped when she heard she might have a female tuba player next year!

RHS Teacher News
Allan Mortenson (Ripon), retired RHS social studies teacher, has been studying the genealogy of his family. His earliest known ancestor, Ralph Hunt, was born in London in 1613. He came to America in 1635 and was an original settler of Newtown, Long Island, in the 1640s. Ralph served as magistrate, surveyor, townsman, and lieutenant in the militia. He provided the land for the first church in that community.
David Schanke (Ripon), retired RHS band director (and father of Robert), had a heart attack in September. He suspected its onset early in the morning and immediately went to Ripon Memorial Hospital. David was flown to Appleton, where doctors put in a couple of stints to open blocked arteries. David suffered no heart damage. Part of his rehabilitation is to exercise, which he doesn't particularly enjoy! Please keep David and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
