Wilkinson County, Georgia History

Wilkinson County, in central Georgia east of Macon was one of the Original counties. It was part of the Creek Indian Lands distributed in the 1805 and 1807 Land Lotteries. Fort Wilkinson. The counties of Baldwin, Twiggs, Bleckley, Dodge, Laurens, Wheeler, Telfair, and Wilkinson all came from the Original Wilkinson County. See Hall's Map of Georgia The county was created in 1803 and names for General James Wilkinson, an officer of the Revolutionary War and native of Maryland.

The county seat, Irwinton, was named for Governor Jared Irwin.
