TIMES ARE CHANGING! THE FOLKS I PLAY FOR REALLY KNOW HOW TO ROCK!
Quality of life has truly improved for seniors. They sing, dance, swim, study, email...these places have seminars to teach all kinds of things! I meet a lot of great people.  Just sorry my grandparents aren't still around...but I have many surrogate grandparents now!

I really enjoy singing for and with  many DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS, which I am blessed to do because I'm in the NYC area. I especially like singing Yiddish at one show-- and then going off to another one to lead an old-timey Gospel singalong!!!
I have many Hispanic, Italian, and Irish client-audiences as well. I'm working on my Russian and Korean (because I have these groups too). It never gets boring !
MUSIC makes one realize just how much we ALL have in common...something most of these folks know.... the world should take a lesson!!!  Peaceful coexistence can become a reality.

Here's an old photo of MY MOM, Cleo, singing with a big band in the 1940s. She was always encouraging me to get into the music business.  After all these years, getting into the Music-for-Seniors field, many of the songs she loved (and used to sing at home) come back to me. So when I think of one, I learn it.  Hopefully, she's somewhere beyond this world and smiling down on me. Interesting note...it looks like this band has a woman drummer!

11/14/01_JOY COMMENTS: " I Had a wonderful MUSIC THERAPY EXPERIENCE Today. A treasured client of mine used to be very active in the music. She had become ill and gone to the hospital, and when she returned to the program, she was very withdrawn. She  would still move her feet to the music, but with her head down and her eyes closed. Today, after two months of this withdrawn behavior... during 'THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND', she  came out of her semi-trance, raised up her head, opened her eyes and started singing with me!  WE WERE ALL FLABBERGASTED! And overjoyed.  So I spent some extra time talking to her and singing  a couple of her favorite songs.  IT WAS LIKE SHE CAME UP FROM BEING UNDERWATER. MUSIC CAN REALLY DO MAGIC SOMETIMES.  THIS IS SUCH FULFILLING WORK.

"Big Apple Booster Come to The Guild
GuildCare clients and participants in the Continuing Day Treatment Program(CDTP) filled  The Guild's city Center auditorium and danced in the aisles during a performance by Joyous Perrin, singer and incredibly dexterous one-woman band, introduced to The Guild by The Big Apple Boosters.  Midway through her performance, Ms. Perrin  was unexpectedly accompanied on the piano by Terrence Sadler, The Guild's own CDTP client who has perfect pitch and can play from memory any song he has heard just once.  The Big Apple Boosters, a group of big-hearted retirees, raise money from their nationwide membership and recruit entertainers for selected nonprofit organizations. This year, their donation to The Guild will enable our Diagnostic & Treatment CEnter to purchase a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (or TENS) machine that delivers heat to the muscles, facilitating movement."
