Welcome to the Jr
Fueler online Magazine. I have created this newsletter in order to help Jr.
Fuel racers and fans stay apprised of the current state of Jr. Fuel
nostalgia drag racing around the country. In this you will find news
about current racers, new racers, records, race results, and upcoming events.
I will attempt to find all the news I can from all the sanctioning bodies
around the country including Goodguys, NHRA, Heartland Hot Rod Association,
ECTA, California Hot Rod Reunion, and any where else Jr Fuel cars run.
Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try I can not be everywhere at once,
so I will need a little help. If you have any news, photos, or stories
I would appreciate it if you would share them with us.

Goodguys 2nd Northwest Nostalgia
Drags
After three rounds of the VRA points race it
appears that Mother Nature may be the points leader as she once again. Not
a single race car made a pass as it rained from start to finish forcing the
Goodguys powers to cancell the event. This actually leaves Scott Parks at
the top of the VRA points championship with only one points paying event
left in the schedule.
Goodguys 9th Pomona Nitro
Nationals
After the March Meet was rained out, the 9th
Pomona Nitro Nationals became the first points paying event in the Goodguys
VRA schedule. This made the points championship one race shorter and everyopne
was wanting to leave Pomona with the points lead.
Jr Fuel B
Bud Hammer took the top spot in Jr Fuel B
qualifying, with a pass of 7.282 @ 181.67. John Rassmussen was right on Hammers
heals with a run of 7.292 @ 182.65. Fred Notzka took the third spot on the
grid with a 7.306 @ 182.23. Don Enriquez grabbed the fourth spot of the ladder
with a 7.312 @ 181.79. Alan Hull (7.509), Dan fenton (7.677), and Ward Frances
(8.782) rounded out the field.
In the first round of eliminations there wer
no upsets as the top four qualifiers all moved to the second round. Thebig
surprise came when John Rasmussen set a new e.t. record with a pass of 7.140
@ 184.52. In the second round of eliminations, Bud Hammer tood the
first win light as he defeated Notzka with a pass of 7.311 to a losing 7.390.
Rasmussen grabbed the last spot in the final when he laid down a pass of
7.257 to defeat Enriquez's 7.312. In the final both drivers played the waiting
game at the light with Hammer eventualy leaving first with a .158 rt. Hammer
laid down a pass of 7.333, however, Rasmussen drove around him with a pass
of 7.185 to take the win and the early points lead.
Jr Fuel A
For Jr fuel A qualifying the became one
of the tightest and quickest in VRA history. Defending champion J.D. Zink
started the season where he left off a year earlier by grabbing the top spot
with a pass of 6.987 @ 189.60. Scott Parks put the Neil & Parks
machine in the second spot on the ladder with a pass of 7.003 @ 189.34. Jon
Haire was next on the grid with a 7.025 @ 189.36. Dean Carter made it in
the top half of the field with a pass of 7.089 @ 188.31. Jon Rowley put his
Retro Rocket in the fifth spot with a 7.097 @ 187.21. Wayne Ramay (7.115),
Mike Chrisman (7.127) and Kelly Craig (7.152) filled in the rest of the field.
Much like the first round of the B field there
were no real surprises or upsets in the first round of eliminations. Zink,
Parks, Carter, and Haire all turned on the win light and advanced to
the second round. In the second (semi-final) round Zink grabbed the first
win light when Haire turned on the red light giving Zink a free pass to the
final. The second pairing of Parks and Carter became the race of the weekend.
Parks nailed the tree with a perfect .000 light and grabbed the hole shot
win with a pass of 7.034 to Carters quicker but losing 7.022. In the final
Parks was once again off the line first and pulled away with pass of 7.060
to defeat Zink's 7.097. This puts Parks in a familiar spot, at the top of
the points championship once again.

Mother Nature wins 47th March
Meet
The 4th Goodguys March Meet is ussually
the first race of the Goodguys VRA points championship. That would not be
the case this year. The first attempt to run the race was halted shortly
after quailifying began. The rain continued forcing the postponement to the
folloing weekend. However, the race would never take place as Boodguys decided
to cancell the race before the gates were even opened due to a very cold
and wet forecast.
Goodguys 7th Fuel &
Gas Finals
For the second year in a row the Jr Fuel A
championship was still up for grabs when the racers entered the grounds of
Famosa Raceway for the Goodguys Fuel and Gas Finals. Once again Scott Parks
came in as the points leader. However, J.D. Zink entered the race with a
real possibility of taking the championship away from Parks. Zink had to
either win the race or take top qualifier, set both low e.t. and top speed,
and finish runner up to get the title. Either way it would not be easy as
several competitors were not worried about the points and simply wanted to
end the season with a win. One of these spoilers was Stu Sandhaus who made
the tow all the way from Pennsylvania. For the Jr Fuel B group the
title was all but decided. John Rasmussen simply had to take a green light
in the first round of eliminations and the 2005 VRA points titile was his.
Jr Fuel A
In Jr Fuel A qualifying, J.D. Zink took his
first step in securing the title by ripping off a pass of 6.956 @ 190.63
to take the top qualifier spot. Jon Haire grabbed the second spot on the
ladder with a pass of 6.990 @ 190.55. Scott Parks put the Neil & Parks
car in the third spot with a 7.021 @ 189.23. Stu Sandhaus showed that you
dont have to be from the West coast to be competitive by taking the fourth
spot with a 7.061 @ 187.18. Kelly Craig (7.193), Mike Chrisman (7.211), Jon
Rowley (7.269), and Brett Murphy (7.287) rounded out the rest of the field.
Brad Woodward (7.439) and Marc McCormick (8.641) found themselves on the
outside looking in.
In the first round of eliminations, Sandhaus
grabbed the first win light when he defeated Murphy with a pass of 7.078
@ 185.18. Scott Parks continued to keep his title chances alive by getting
another round victory over Rowley with a pass of 7.101 @ 188.79. Although
the next pairing were not in the championship hunt the race would have a
big effect on the points race as Jon Haire set quick e.t. and top speed with
a pass of 6.940 @ 191.93 to defeat Chrisman. Zink kept his hope alive with
a pass of 6.992 to send Kelly Craig home early.
The first pairing of the second round would
pit the two title contenders against each other on the track. Parks wins
and the title is his. Zink wins and he still has a chance. Parks grabs the
holeshot and runs a 7.121, but it is not enough as Zink lays down a 6.962
and drives around parks for the round win. In the next pair Sandhaus continued
to impress as he rips off a pass of 7.065 to send Haire to the trailer. In
the final round Zink would need to take the win to take the title as Haire
still had quick e.t. and top speed. But it turned out to be more exciting
than Zink wanted. At the hit of the throttle the nose of Zink's car shot
to the sky and went into a blow over. The car then came down and barrel rolled
several times before finally coming to rest sideways at half track. Sandhaus
managed to make it around the carnage with a pass of 7.065 to take the Fuel
and Gas Finals win. However, everyone's' attention was still on Zink. Fortunately
Zink's most serious injuries were to his equipment and his title hopes. .
Although he finished runner up he didn't get the points for low e.t. and
top speed so the championship went to Parks yet again.
Jr Fuel B
In the Jr Fuel B qualifying, Fred Notzka grabbed
the top spot with a pass of 7.263 @ 183.74. Veteran Don Enriquez put the
McKray, Enriquez, and Algire Jr Fueler in the second spot with a 7.271 @
181.56. Bud Hammer grabbed the third spot with a 7.275 @ 180.46. John Rasmussen
put his car firmly in the field with a pass of 7.278 @ 182.40. Kol Johnson
(7.475), Alan Hull (7.482), Ward Frances (8.895) and Dan Fenton (13.355)
rounded out the rest of the field. Ward Frances had a bit of excitement
in the Friday night session when he lost the brakes and ended the run sitting
upside down in the sand trap.
In the first round of eliminations, Bud Hammer
took the first win light when Ward Frances could not make the call due to
his excursion into the sand on Friday. Hammer ran a 7.233 @ 184.46
to take the top speed mark. John Rasmussen put the nail in his 2005 VRA
Championship and the round win when he defeated Fenton with a pass of 7.262.
Don Enriquez grabbed the next win light when he ran a 7.30 to defeat Hull.
Fred Notzka lowered the quick e.t. mark with a pass of 7.232 on his way defeating
Kol Johnson.
In the first pairing of the Semi-Final round
Budd Hammer reset low e.t. and top speed with a pass of 7.199 @ 184.61 to
send grab the win light and send Notzka home early. Don Enriquez apparently
felt Rasmussen needed to get the championship party started early so he outran
him with a pass of 7.268 @ 182.40 to grab the last spot in the final. In
the final, Enriquez grabbed the holeshot and never looked back as he ran
a 7.274 to take the Fuel and Gas Jr Fuel B Eliminator title over Hammer.
NHRA National Hot Rod
Reunion
For the third straight year the nostalgia circus
entered the gates of Beach Bend Park for the NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion.
Every year the event has grown and this year was no exception. The event
set new records for spectator, hot rod, and racer attendance. This year also
saw the first split in the Jr Fuel fields for the event. This meant that
for the first time the B field cars could race amongst themselves and not
be the field fillers for the A field
Jr Fuel B
For the first round of Jr Fuel B qualifying,
Bob Crouse set the tone with a pass of 7.867 @ 166.68 to take the top spot.
Bruce Hacker put his Revolution entry into the second spot with a pass of
8.033 @ 166.68. Mike Milsap grabbed the third spot with an 8.117 @ 169.10.
Troy Wilson (8.126) and Larry "Bud" Hunter ( 8.212) rounded out the
field.
In the second round Crouse remained at the top
of the field with a 7.862. Hacker picked up a little performance and kept
his position with a pass of 7.955. Troy Wilson jumped up into the third spot
with a pass of 7.979 @ 167.93. Millsap improved his performance but dropped
to the fourth spot with an 8.018 @ 161.30. Chuck Rearick overcame starter
finger problems and subsequent flexplate issues to grab the fifth spot with
a pass of 8.086 @ 150.51. Hunter rounded out the field with a pass of 8.178
@ 163.65.
In the final round of B field qualifying the
top three spots remained the same as Crouse improved to a 7.820 @ 166.68.
Hacker and Wilson did not improve and kept their spots. Bud Hunter continued
to improve and moved up to the fourth spot with an 8.008 @ 166.68. Rearick
(8.011) and Millsap (8.018) rounded out the field.
In the first round of eliminations Rearick took
the first win light with a hole shot win over Hacker. The second pair was
also decided at the tree as Troy Wilson turned on the red and gave Hunter
the free trip to the second round. In the final pairing Millsap improved
his performance to a 7.960, however, it was not enough as Crouse beat him
to the line with a 7.898.
For the Semi final round, Crouse received the
bye and made the easy trip to the final round. Hunter continued to find power
and improved to a 7.950 @168.56 to not only defeat Rearick's 8.042, but also
take top speed of the meet. In the final Crouse continued to dominate and
easily took the win with a 7.826 to defeat Hunter's 8.161.
Jr Fuel A
In the first round of Jr Fuel A qualifying,
Scott parks took up right where he left off in Indy by taking the top spot
with a pass of 7.191 @ 187.95. Stu Sandhaus nailed down the second spot with
a pass of 7.270 @ 182.95. Dave Dupps grabbed the third spot with a 7.354
@ 182.21. Brian Darcy put his Five Star Automotive entry into the fourth
spot with a 7.435 @ 181.47. Jon Rowley (7.560) and Pat Malloy (7.822) rounded
out the field.
In the second round the Parks continued to top
the field with his Neil & Parks entry with a pass of 7.151 @ 183.69.
Sandhaus (7.270) and Dupps (7.306) remained in the second and third
spots, however, Malloy jumped to the fourth spot with a 7.338 @ 182.21.
Darcy and Rowley could not improve and fell to the fifth and sixth
spots.
Parks could not improve in the third round as
he ran into a parts failure, however, his previous efforts kept him at the
top of the order. Jon Rowley found something and put his Neil @ Parks built
Retro Rocket in the second spot with a 7.209 @ 181.47. Brian Darcy
was able to improve to the third spot with a pass of 7.264 @ 182.95. This
filled the top three spots with Neil & Parks built diggers. Sandhaus
(7.270) Dupps (7.288), and Malloy (7.338) filled out the rest of the
field.
In the first round of eliminations Dave Dupps
took the first spot in the semi final round when he defeated Rowley with
a pass of 7.25 to Rowley's losing 7.30. Sandhaus ran a 7.203 which was
just barely enough to defeat tire shaking 7.240 pass of Brian Darcy. Scott
Parks continued to raise the bar as he ran a 7.108 to defeat Malloy who had
to lift when his car made a serious move to the center line at the his of
the throttle.
In the second round Parks received the
free pass to the final with a bye run. Stu Sandhaus dipped into
the teens with a pass of 7.193 to send Dupps (7.253) to the
trailer. In the final Sandhaus once again found some performance with a pass
of 7.18 however, it was not enough as Parks st quick e.t. of the meet with
a 7.104 to take his third strait National Hot Rod Reunion title.

Goodguys Indy Hot Rod
Nationals
For yet another year Mother Nature wins the
Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals held at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Once again
rain put an end to the racing . However, this time it never even made it
to eliminations, as the rain clouds opened up before eliminations could begin.
Despite this qualifying would set the tone for qualifying for the following
weekend at the National Hot Rod Reunion with Scott Parks setting the
pace.
At the end of qualifying Scott parks was at
the top of the order with a pass of 7.075 @ 187.78. However, Georgia native,
Richard Larsen was right on his heels with a pass of 7.095 @ 187.89. Stu
Sandhaus made his presence felt when he laid down a 7.174 @ 182.67 to take
the third spot on the ladder. Jon Rowley put his Retro Rocket in the fourth
position with a pass of 7.346 @ 183.59. Brian Darcy took the fifth spot in
his Five Star Automotive entry with a 7.388 @ 181.30. Jon Rhodes Jr. took
the sixth spot and became the final A car in the field with a pass of 7.521
@ 177.63. Bob Crouse became the highest qualifying B car with a pass of 7.764
@ 170.92. He would repeat this distinction at the National Hot Rod Reunion.
The rest of the field was filled with the B cars of Troy Wilson and Paul
McCann.
Goodguys 17th Nitro
Nationals
As the Infeneon Raceway pits filled with
nostalgia racers it became apparent that the 17th Goodguys Nitro nationals
would not have huge fields in either class of Jr Fuel. However, the cars
that did show put on a heck of a show and there were a few surprises along
the way as well. Unfortunately the fields were not the only thing that were
short. The qualifying was also cut short due to a serious oil down during
the NE1 qualifications.
Jr Fuel B
In the one and
only round of Jr fuel B Qualifying, John Rasmussen flexed his Hemi powered
muscle and put his car at the top of the ladder with a pass of 7.226 @ 181.40.
Bud Hammer nailed down the second spot with a pass of 7.462 @ 179.72. Kol
Johnson grabbed the third spot with a pass of 7.480 @ 180.16. Neil O'Kane
(8.503), and Fred Notzka ( 9.218) rounded out the small 5 car field.
In the first round of eliminations,
Kol Johnson grabbed the first win light with a pass of 7.466 @ 174.64 to
defeat Notkza's 7.720 effort. Neil O'Kane moved to the semifinal round when
Bud hammer could not make the call. John Rasmussen took the final spot in
the semi-final round with a bye. However used the opportunity to take the
top e.t. and mile per hour honors when he laid down a pass of 7.213 @
183.22.
In the semi-final round O'Kane received
another free pass as he received a bye when Johnson could not make the call.
Rasmussen took the last spot in the final as he defeated Notkza with a pass
of 7.279 @ 180.74. In the final Rasmussen continued his winning ways
with a pass of 7.313 @ 180.14 to defeat O'Kane's pass of 7.934 @
168.30.
Jr Fuel A
The Jr Fuel A field was a little
larger with seven cars filling out the field. Former Champion, Wayne Ramay
made his first appearance of the year and let everyone know that he hadn't
forgotten how to go fast when he ripped off a pass of 6.996 @ 189.04 to take
the top qualifying spot. Scott Parks was right on his heels with a 7.019
@ 190.06 to grab the second spot. Dean Carter was also making this his first
VRA race of the season and grabbed the third spot with a pass of 7.059 @
187.78. Mike Chrisman (7.372) grabbed the fourth spot while Brett Murphy
(7.391) took the fifth spot. J.D. Zink (7.462) and Jon Rowley (7.509)
rounded out the field.
In the first round of eliminations Wayne Ramay
took his first round win of the season when he laid down a pass of 7.078
@ 188.46 on his bye run. Mike Chrisman cut a .001 light and ran a pass of
7.275 to defeat Rowley's 7.344 effort. J.D. Zink grabbed quick e.t. of the
meet (6.898) on his way to beating Carter. In the final pairing Scott Parks
took a shot at the 6 second barrier and came oh so close with a pass of 7.007
@ 188.67 to defeat Murphy who fouled at the tree.
In the semi-final round Ramay's day came to
an end as he had problems allowing Zink to drive around him with a pass of
6.922 @ 187.99. Ramay slowed to a 7.833 @ 131.78. Scott Parks secured
his second final round appearance of the weekend when Chrisman took a shot
at the tree and missed. Chrisman fouled with a -.019 reaction time
as Parks laid down a pass of 7.123 @ 184.27 to take the win. In the
final Parks grabbed a .046 second holeshot and ran a 7.056 @ 186.02, however,
it wasn't enough as Zink once again dipped into the sixes with a pass of
6.911 @ 188.46. Zink was able to drive around Parks at the big end and take
the win light to give him his first VRA victory of the season.

Goodguys 46th March
Meet
The 2005 nostalgia drag racing season
kicked off in grand fashion at the Goodguys 46th annual March Meet held at
Fomosa Raceway in Bakersfield, California. The pits were full of premium
racers and equipment. Many of the teams entered the race track with new
combinations, cars, and equipment all with hopes of taking home the prize
and starting off their seasons with good numbers.
Jr Fuel B
In Friday's first round of Jr Fuel B
qualifying, Bud Hammer put his orange machine at the top of the ladder with
a pass of 7.328 @ 182.44. John Rasmussen put his Hemi powered entry in the
second spot with a pass of 7.346 @ 180.86. Don Enriquez was right on their
heels with a pass of 7.348 @181.05 to grab the third spot. Kol Johnson put
the Johnson Family Jr Fueler in the top half of the order with a pass of
7.508 @178.60 to take fourth. Dan Fenton (7.579), Robbie Morris (8.041),
and Kristen Neumann (8.117), filled out the rest of the field.
Conditions on Saturday were not as good
as Friday so most could not improve on their earlier attempts. This left
the order the same at the top of the order with Hammer, Rasmussen , Enriquez,
Johnson, and Fenton holding down the first five spots respectively. Alan
Hull broke into the field with a pass of 7.567 @ 173.01 to take the sixth
spot. This bumped Morris and Neumann down the order to seventh and
eighth.
Sunday dawned with great conditions for
racing and the elimination rounds would be filled with stellar performances
and some history making passes. However, for the first round of eliminations
Neumann could not make the call and Kol Johnson was given a free trip to
the second round. For the second pairing, Robbie Morris found some power
and improved his performance to a 7.922, but it was not enough as Don Enriquez
put his Bob McKray tuned machine into the second round with a pass of 7.397
@ 181.08 leaving Morris on the outside looking in. John Rasmussen sent Alan
Hull home early with a pass of 7.304 @ 180.90 to defeat Hull. Bud Hammer
nailed down the final spot in the second round with a blistering pass of
7.266 @ 181.85 to defeat Fenton's effort of 7.563.
In the semi-final round John Rasmussen took
the first spot in the final when he defeated Kol Johnson with a pass of 7.358
@ 180.25 to defeat Johnson who improved his numbers to a 7.489 @ 179.06.
The final spot in the championship round would be decided between Bud Hammer
and Don Enriquez. The two veterans left the line together but from there
it was all over as Bud put the Hammer down and ripped off a record setting
pass of 7.216 @ 182.85 to defeat Enriquez's impressive 7.308 pass. In
the final Hammer grabbed the win with a pass of 7.274 to defeat Rasmussen's
7.421 effort.
Jr Fuel A
In the first round of qualifying for the
A field Jr Fuelers, J.D. Zink started season where he left off the
2004 season, at the top of the order. Zink laid down a pass of 6.964 @ 191.04
to take the number one qualifying spot. The 2004 VRA Jr Fuel A points champions,
Neil and Parks teamed debuted their new chassis in fine fashion by grabbing
the second pot in the order with a pass of 7.066 @ 189.47. Jon Haire finished
his 2005 season with a win, and started his 2005 season by putting himself
in contention for the win by grabbing the third spot on the ladder with a
pass of 7.099 @ 189.15. Jon Rowley grabbed the fourth spot in his Retro Rocket
machine with a pass of 7.215 @ 185.26. Mike Chrisman (7.349), Brad Woodward
(7.386), Brett Murphy (7.512), and Kelly Craig (8.182) filled in the final
spots of the field.
Second round qualifying for the A field
was quite different than that of the B field as many found more power and
the field was shuffled dramatically. Zink continued to dominate the field
by improving his earlier time with a pass of 6.932 @ 191.20. Jon Haire jumped
to the second spot on the grid with a pass of 7.051 @ 189.51. Parks dropped
to the third spot as he could not improve Rowley stayed in the fourth spot
based on his earlier performance. Kelly Craig moved up to the fifth spot
when she laid down a pass of 7.246 @ 183.11. Chrisman improved his numbers
to a 7.255 but still fell back to the sixth spot. Woodward and Murphy could
not improve and dropped to the final two spots of the field.
In the first round of eliminations, number eight
qualifier Murphy was given a free trip to the semifinal round when Rowley
had problems after the burnout and had to be pushed off the track. Mike Chrisman
continued the upsets as he nailed a perfect reaction time to defeat number
two qualifier Jon Haire. Scott Parks grabbed a spot in the semifinal round
with a pass of 7.121 @ 189.07 to defeat Woodward. Kelly Craig was seeing
red as she left the line and gave the final spot in the second round to
Zink.
In the semifinal round Chrisman continued his
winning ways by leaving Murphy at the tree with a reaction time of .022 to
Murphy's comatose reaction time of .197. Chrisman then tripped the lights
with an e.t. of 7.220 to take the first spot in the final round. The best
race of the weekend was between Parks and Zink for the last spot in the final.
Parks grabbed the holeshot win with a .047 reaction time and a pass of 7.164
to defeat Zink's quicker but losing 7.161 pass. In the final Parks and Chrisman
left heads up. Chrisman improved on his first round performance with a pass
of 7.214, however, it was not enough as Parks tripped the lights with a pass
of 7.169 to take the first Jr Fuel A race of the year. This win puts Parks
at the top of the points which just where he left off in the 2004
season.

NHRA California Hot Rod
Reunion
For yet another year the Nostalgia drag racing
circus made the trip to Bakersfield for the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion. The fuel
prices and lack of points looked to keep a lot of the racers at home as had
happened at the last Goodguys race in Washington State. However, although
a couple of the A cars staid home the B field was full with all of the heavy
hitters making the tow.
Jr Fuel
B
In the first round of Jr Fuel B John Rasmussen
showed why he is the current VRA points leader by taking the top spot of
the provisional field. Rasmussen laid down a pass of 7.346 @ 183.07 to take
the top spot. Don Enriquez took the second spot with a 7.368 @ 181.08.
Fred Notzka continued to impress with a 7.410 @ 180.25 to take third. Alan
Hull grabbed the fourth spot with a 7.775 @ 170.94. Brett Hordeman put himself
in the top five with a 7.881 @ 173.27. Kol Johnson (8.258), Bud Hammer (12.338),
and Neil O'Kane (13.259) rounded out the eight car field.
In the second and final round of Jr Fuel B
qualifying the field shuffled up a bit as many found some horsepower between
rounds and put it to use. Rasmussen found a little and retained his
number one spot with a 7.292 @ 183.03. Bud Hammer made a huge jump from the
seventh position to grab the number two spot with a pass of 7.356 @ 181.06.
Enriquez and Notzka could not improve and dropped to the third and fourth
spots. Brett Hordeman found a couple of tenths with a 7.600 but remained
in the fifthe spot. Johnson (7.628), Hull (7.641), and O'Kane (7.848) all
improved but couldnt move up the ladder.
For the first round of Jr Fuel B eliminations
Neil O'Kane took an unexpected win light when Notzka ran into problems. O'Kane
gave up half a tenth at the line but ran a 7.829 to take the win light. Don
Enriquez grabbed the win in the second pairing with a pass of 7.325 to defeat
Hull's 7.584. Bud Hammer grabbed a spot in the second round with a 7.335
pass over Kol Johnson's 7.552. IN the final pairing of the round Rasmussen
took the provisional low e.t. of the meet with a pass of 7.312 to send Hordemann
to the trailer early.
In the second round of Eliminations, O'Kane's
giant killer status came to an end as Bud Hammer grabbed the win light with
a pass of 7.443. In the second pairing Rasmussen again set low e.t. and top
speed of the meet with a pass of 7.228. However, it was a losing effort
as Enriquez caught him napping and grabbed over a tenth advantage at the
tree and ran a 7.305 to take the holeshot victory and the last spot in the
final. In the final it would be Enriquez that left the line late as Hammer
took a hundreth advantage at the tree. Hammer the simply pulled away with
a pass of 7.329 to Enriques' losing 7.371 effort.
Jr Fuel A
In the first round of Jr Fuel A qualifying
Jon Haire set the tone with a 7.179 @ 186.29 to take the top spot. Mike Chrisman
laid down a pass of 7.258 @ 187.57 to nail down the provisional second spot.
Kelly Craig took the third spot with a 7.267 @ 183.89. Brad Woodward (7.442),
J.D. Zink (7.563), and Marc McCormic(7.799)
In the second round J.D. Zink shook of his earlier
gremlins and took the number one spot with a 7.131 @ 181.59. Chrisman picked
up a little with an effort of 7.159 to remain in the second spot. Jon Haire
was not able to improve and fell down the ladder to third. Craig ( 7.267),
Woodward (7.442), and McCormic (7.799) rounded out the field in the final
round of qualifying.
In the first round of eliminations Jon Haire
took a shot at the quick e.t. mark with a pass of 6.985 @ 189.87 to take
the win light over McCormick who could not make the call. Brad Woodward also
had problems giving Chrisman a bye run into the second round. J.D Zink
lowered his qualifying time with a pass of 7.061 @ 189.79 to defeat Kelly
Craig who slowed to a 7.278.
In the second round Zink recieved the bye and
laid down a pass of 7.116 to take the first spot in the final. In the last
pairing of the round Mike Chrisman took a shot at the tree and missed by
8/1000ths to give the win to Haire. Haire slowed to a 7.011 but it was
still good enough for lane choice in the final round. In the final
Haire grabbed the advantage at the tree and dipped back into the sixes with
a pass of 6.990 @ 190.55 to take the win over Zinks 7.031.

Nostalgia Nationals at
Mid State Dragway in Havana,
IL,
In Junior Fuel class of the
2005 Nostalgia Nationals held at Mid State Dragway in Havana, IL,it was the
defending champ Troy Wilson of Jamestown, IN, in his Bob Boulton built FED
who snagged the pole position with a 4.99 ET @ 138 mph. Wilson also took
home the title again this year with a win in the final over Pat Sywassink
of Muscatine, IA.
Goodguys 1st Northwest Nostalgia
Nationals
For the first time the Goodguys nostalgia
circus made an appearance in Washington State. The next to last points race
would be held at Pacific Raceways in Renton, Washington. Unfortunately
the high price of gas prices caused many to leave their diggers in the shop
and the Jr. Fuel fields would not be full. However, with both points chases
up in the air, the racecars that did make the haul were loaded for bear and
ready to push the envelope on the record books.
Jr Fuel B
At the end of the first round of Qualifying
in the B field the two points leaders would be left wondering if they
had made the right decision to leave sunny California. Fred Notkza driving
the chassis formally piloted by Kristen Neumann and now powered by a new
powerplant set the tone by sticking his new ride on the provissional pole
with a blistering pass of 7.242 @ 182.01. Bud Hammer took the second spot
with a pass of 7.350 @ 181.59. Points leader John Rassmussen managed to put
his machine in the third spot, however, he was over 3 tenths off the pace
with a pass of 7.619 @ 171.99. Kol Johnson grabbed the fourth spot with a
7.679 @ 176.10. Brett hordemann (8.340), and Dan Fenton (9.381) rounded out
the six car field.
In the second round of qualifying Bud hammer
took a shot at the record book running a 7.211 @ 181.50 to take the top spot.
Notzka dropped two tenths off his earlier time but managed to fall into the
second spot. Kol Johnson jumped into the third spot with a pass of
7.486 @ 178.28. Points leader Rassmussen still could not find a handle on
his performance as he lost fire on the burnout. He would fall to the fourth
position based on his first round time. Hordemann picked up five tenths with
a pass of 7.810 but remained in the 5th spot. Fenton chose not to make
a pass and remained in the final spot.
In the final round of qualifying Hammer
not only took a shot at the record he took it with a pass of 7.195 @ 182.92.
Notzka still could not find his earlier numbers but continued to hold the
second spot. Kol Johnson found a little horsepower and retained the third
spot with a pass of 7.447. Rassmussen still struggled and kept the fourth
spot. Dan Fenton chose not to make a pass in the second round. He must have
spent his time wisely as he picked up the fifth spot and nearly two seconds
with a pass of 7.62. Hordeman continued to improve with a 7.73 but fell to
sixth and final spot.
The first round of eliminations would turn out
to be one of the most important rounds of the year. With Hammer and Rassmussen
scheduled as the first pair, the championship could be decided right here.
And with Rassmussen struggling and Hammer flying it looked like a forgone
conclusion. However, that is why they run race. Rassmussen grabbed the lead
off the line and found five tenths and grabbed the top speed mark with a
run of 7.235 @ 183.32 to take the win as Hammer fell off his earlier pace
to a 7.307. By taking the win light in this round Rassmussen solidified the
points lead and every round he advanced Hammer chances of being able to catch
him dwindled. In the second pairing Fred Notzka found his earlier pace
and gave Hammer a little hope as he ran a 7.237 to defeat Dan Fenton. Kol
Johnson grabbed the final win light of the round as he beat Hordemann
to the finish line with a pass of 7.496.
In the semifinal round Rassmussen received
the bye run. However, instead of laying low and taking the easy pass to the
final, Rassmussen decided to send a message. Rassmussen ripped off a pass
of 7.170 @ 184.90 to retake both ends of the record which Hammer
had set earlier in the event. However, Fred Notzka was not done as he ran
his best ever time with a run of 7.204 @ 183.37 to defeat Johnson. In the
final Hammer's hopes of being able to stretch his title chance to the final
race were dashed as Notzka lost fire and could not make it to the line to
challenge Rassmussen. However, once again Rassmussen did not simply idle
down to take the easy win. Instead he lowered the records once again with
an astounding pass of 7.163 @ 185.79. This pass not only gave him the new
record but also made it all but impossible for him to lose the championship.
All Rasmussen has to do is show up at the final event and the
championship.
Jr Fuel A
The high cost of fuel also affected the size
of the Jr Fuel A fields. Actually the A field was smaller with only five
A cars making the tow. However, just as in the B field the racing would be
fast and furious. This race would also be just as important to the outcome
of the season as that of the B field. Both Scott parks and J.D. Zink entered
the grounds hoping to leave with a big points lead. Dean Carter entered the
gates of the track not worrying about the points for himself, but he could
be a big spoiler for someone's championship hopes.
Right of the hit, Carter let it be known that
he was there to race. He grabbed the top spot of the first round with a pass
of 6.998 @ 187.76. Ray Hadford put his machine in the second spot with a
pass of 7.165. IN fact it was the points leaders that were finding
the going rough. Scott Parks didn't struggle as much as Zink, but Parks was
not happy with his 7.244 effort that put him in the third spot. Jon Rowley
was right on Parks' heals in the fourth spot after a run of 7.292. Zink was
so far off the pace with his 7.647 that his pass was not only the slowest
of the round but would have left him next to last in the Jr Fuel B
field.
In the second round Carter improved to a 6.985
@ 188.25 and retained the top spot. However, Zink found his stride and jumped
into the second spot with an effort of 7.041 @ 188.57. Ray hadford could
not improve his earlier numbers and fell to the third spot. The Neil &
Parks team decided to lay out of the second round in hopes of finding the
setup and fell to the fourth spot. Rowley also fell down the ladder to the
fifth and final spot.
In the third round Carter staid at the top based
on his earlier numbers. The decision by the Parks team paid off big as they
found the sweat spot and ripped off a pass of 7.007 @ 187.89 to take the
second spot. Zink couldn't find anymore speed and dropped to the third spot.
Ray Hadford (7.165), and Jon Rowley (7.184) rounded out the field.
In the first round of eliminations it would
be Jon Rowley would be the first to try out the spoiler roll. However, he
could not produce the numbers as Rowley's 7..33 was not enough to overcome
the 7.207 pass of Zink. Scoot Parks continued to hit on all eight and ran
a 7.086 to send Hadford to the trailer early. Carter had the bye and ran
a 6.994 on his free pass to the semifinal round.
In the semifinal round it was Parks who received
the bye run. His car was in the zone running like a bracket car with a pass
of 7.088. The second pairing would be the important race of the round. Dean
Carter grabbed the early advantage and continued to dip into the 6 second
range with a pass of 6.992 to take the win light over the sleeping Zink.
This gave Parks a little more breathing room in his chances of retaining
the championship. The final round was over before it began as Parks broke
giving Carter the bye to win the event.

Goodguys 8th Pomona Nitro
Nationals
With the points battles of both the A and B fields
still up in the air the Pomona 8th Nitro Nationals would prove to be a turning
point for the 2005 season. Scott Parks entered the facility looking to increase
his chances of retaining the VRA points championship, while J.D. Zink was
looking to take the points lead home with him. Bud Hammer came3 to Pomona
with the hopes of regaining the points lead in the Jr Fuel B division while
John Rasmussen would be doing anything he could to leave the grounds of Pomona
with the points lead still in his grasp.
Jr Fuel B
The first round of Jr Fuel B qualifying
would end with neither Rasmussen or Hammer at the top of the order. Fred
Notzka ripped off a 7.393 @ 179.10 right out of the box to take the provisional
top spot on the ladder. Hammer took the second spot with a pass of 7.410
@ 181.08, however, Rasmussen was right on his tail with a pass of 7.422 @
179.39 to take the third spot. Don Enriquez found himself in the fourth spot
with a pass of 7.634 @ 171.36. Neil O'Kane (8.009), Dan Fenton (8.815), and
Ward Frances (9.534) rounded out the first round order.
In the second round Bud Hammer let everyone
know he wasn't there to play by grabbing the top spot with a pass of 7.273
@ 180.94. Bob McKray found more performance for Enriquez allowing him to
take the second spot with a pass of 7.307 @ 181.01. Rasmussen also
improved on his earlier numbers but remained in the third spot with a
7.349@181.41. Fred Notzka lost a little in round two which forced him down
to the fourth spot on the grid. Kol Johnson found a spot in the field after
he laid down a 7.538 @ 178.42 to put him in the fifth spot. Alan Hull also
came from outside the field into the sixth position with a 7.655 @ 171.88
effort. Fenton (7.974) and Neil O'Kane (8.009) rounded out the field.
In the final round of qualifying there
were a few performance improvements , however, the order remained stagnant
with everyone retaining their spots from the previous round. Dan Fenton found
3/10ths between rounds and improved his numbers with a shot of 7.680 @ 172.28.
Alan Hull raised his numbers to a 7.954 @ 169.17 but remained at the bottom
of the order.
The first round of eliminations in the B field
would be rather dramatic. Neil O'Kane saw his first VRA win light of the
season when he defeated Frances 8.010 to a losing 8.767. Rasmussen aided
his title hopes with a first round win over Dan Fenton. Rasmussen's 7.331
was more than enough to send Fenton's 7.680 performance to the trailer.
The next pairing would be the most shocking as Alan Hull sent the veteran
Enriquez home early. In a rare miscue Enriquez's chute deployed to
early giving Hull the easy round win with a pass of 7.731. Bud Hammer took
the final win light and low e.t.of the round with a pass 7.308 to defeat
Kol Johnson.
The second round of Jr Fuel B eliminations would
turn out to be one of the most important of the season as the main points
rivals found themselves head to head. In the end it would not be dramatic
as Hammer could not make it to the line and Rasmussen was given the single
and the free pass to the final round. However, the round was not entirely
devoid of drama. When Neil O'Kane tried to fire his machine the result was
a shower of sparks and not the usual roar of a zoomie equipped small block.
This left Alan Hull with what should have been an easy pass into his first
Goodguys final. However, as the green light came on Hull's motor zinged
to the moon and the car travelled all of about 2 inches. So much for easy.
In the final round Hull dragged his wounded beast to the line in the hopes
that Rasmussen would stumble as well. It was not to be as Rasmussen ripped
off a 7.351 @ 181.48 which not only gave Rasmussen the win light but also
top speed of the meet. This victory had another outcome as well, as it solidified
Rasmussen's lead in the points making it much harder for Hammer to steal
away with only two more events left in the season.
Jr Fuel A
In the first round of Jr Fuel A qualifying
J.D. Zink set the tone with a pass of 7.065 @ 188.12 to take the top spot
and let everyone know he was here to accumulate some points. Dean Carter
managed to grab the second spot on the ladder with a pas of 7.143 @ 185.87.
Jon Haire took the provisional third spot on the grid when he laid down a
7.148 @ 187.46 effort. Scott Parks put the Neil & Parks machine in the
middle of the field with a 7.152 @ 185.03. Jon Rowley (7.315), Kelly Craig
(7.351),Mike Chrisman(7.497), and Todd Movius (7.582) rounded out the provisional
field.
Round two of Jr Fuel qualifying would
not see a little movement as many found more performance in their pits. However,
Jon Haire jumped into the number one spot with a pass of 7.021 @ 188.24.
Both Zink and Carter slipped in performance and fell to the second and third
spots respectively. Parks also had to rely on his first round numbers and
remained in the fourth spot. Kelly Craig picked up a tenth with a pass of
7.287 and moved up to the number five spot. Rowley picked up his numbers
to 7.296 but fell to the sixth rung on the ladder. Brad Woodward made the
biggest jump as he came from the outside looking in to the seventh spot with
a pass of 7.381 @ 177.23. Mike Chrisman could not improve and found himself
on the bubble.
The third round of qualifying would see the
top five spots stay stagnant as most could not find the performance needed
to move up the ladder. Carter improved to a 7.093 while Parks improved to
a 7.129 which was good enough to keep them in the third an fourth spots.
Kelly Craig could not improve on her previous numbers and staid in the fifth
spot. However, Chrisman found a few hundredths and moved off the bubble into
the sixth spot with a pass of 7.295. Jon Rowley continued to slip down the
order, but managed to lodge himself in the seventh position. Wayne Ramay
managed to bump himself into the eighth spot with a 7.377 effort. Brad
Woodward (7.381), Todd Movius (7.547), Marc McCormick (7.782), and Darell
Perrott (7.989) all found themselves out of the field and on the trailer
early.
In the first round of Eliminations Wayne
Ramay continued to improve his numbers to a 7.260 @ 184.65, however, Parks
continued to improve as well. Parks' 7.099 @ 186.64 was more than enough
to take the win light over Ramay. Dean Carter took the second win light with
a pass of 7.094 @ 186.67 to defeat Rowley who could only muster a 7.369 @
179.53. Jon Haire took quick e.t. of eliminations with a pass of 7.046
to send Kelly Craig home. Zink grabbed the final spot in the second round
with a win over a slowing Chrisman.
Scott Parks nabbed the first spot in the
final as he ran a 7.117 to defeat Zinks skating 7.631. Jon Haire then sent
Carter packing. Haire once again set quick e.t. of the round with a 7.09
over Carters 7.133. In the final Parks grabbed the holeshot and laid down
a pass of 7.097 which was good enough to beat Haire's quicker but losing
pass of 7.086. This holeshot victory allowed parks to leave the facilities
with the points lead and closer to his goal of another consecutive VRA points
title.
