A Tribute In the late nineteen sixties to early nineteen seventies, while I was still quite young, I rarely listened to popular music. I didn't have much opportunity because stereo equipment was expensive for a family of eight and my mother was becoming more involved with the church and my father's taste ran more towards some classical music. My older sisters played some of the more recent hits on a low priced phonograph, Simon and Garfunkle come to mind, but access to more popular music was quite limited. The town's local station would play what would be today an eclectic selection that ran the gambit form Tennessee Ernie Ford to Nancy Sanatra. The television received two channels well, the CBS and NBC affiliates. I got to watch the Monkees, so that was something, and I remember someone spoofing the Beatles classic "I Want To Hold Your Hand", so I guess that I was not completely without culture. I still did not have a music that I understood. I think I remember hearing "Country Roads" and I certainly remember hearing "Leaving On A Jet Plane" as it was covered by Peter Paul and Mary. I enjoyed listening to John's music. He sang songs I could and do relate. His music was pure and simple and emotional. Sharing experiences, visions, and feelings in a way that even a child could understand. Trill of flight enjoyed by the hawk and eagle, the rush of energy and power behind the horse's run, the sweetness of love, the anger and bitterness of love's parting. He shared his life, giving of what he understood of it. Through great joy and sorrow he gave to us all. He didn't sugar coat the bitter, but remembered to share the sweet. With that said, I would like to thank you, John, for all that you gave. My love of your song, closeness I feel to understanding you in both joy and sadness is something I share take with me each day. I pray that you have found the peace which you were looking and enjoy it for eternity.
