SOME BACKGROUND
Who Are You and What do You Write?
We are a writing team, authors of numerous books for young readers. Some of our best known publications are the Children's Choice Books: Two Badd Babies, Six Creepy Sheep, and Six Snowy Sheep all published by Boyds Mills Press. Or perhaps you've seen Nell Nugget and the Cow Caper (Simon and Schuster), What's the Matter, Kelly Beans? (Candlewick) or Something's Happening on Calabash Street (Chronicle). Sometimes we write under the pseudonym Jeffie Ross Gordon. Two Badd Babies, written as Jeffie Ross Gordon, is now available in paperback. You'll also find our stories in Highlights for Children, Spider and LadyBug magazines, and on the Kid's Reading Corner page of the Los Angeles Times.
How did you become a writing team?
We met in a class at UCLA taught by Eve Bunting and became friends. While taking a later class in adult genre fiction, we decided to try writing together and had so much fun that we decided we wanted to be a team.
How do two people write together?
We brainstorm our ideas then one of us does the first draft for a picture book or a chapter outline for a novel. We trade drafts back and forth, do a lot of reading out loud, and after about ten or twelve revisions, we might be ready to mail the manuscript off to our agent. Of course an editor may ask for more revisions. Writing is a lot of rewriting.
Do you ever visit schools?
Oh, yes. We have visited a number of schools, single schools, entire school systems,one-room schools, and grades kindergarten through college. In fact we have a brochure about our school visits, available for the asking.
What are your working on now?
We have just finished a picture book about pirates and are working on two novels for middle grade readers.
