Almost two thousand students from 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries attended the Latin American School of Medical Sciences in the year 1999-2000, with over a hundred additional Haitian students at the Superior Institute of Medical Sciences in Santiago de Cuba. The school plans to add 1500 students per year in the succeeding classes.

The full medical school program is six years. The first two will be spent at the Latin American School of Medical Sciences with other international students, the last four integrated into Cuban medical schools. Because many of the students have not had prior access to quality education, classes are small and much attention is given to remedial assistance. As a result of this, and their high motivation and effort, international students at the Latin American School of Medical Sciences bested the Cuban medical students on their first year examinations.
