Our Ferrets ~ page 3
I named the new boy Charlie. He's so cute and just a brat. He tried to be the alpha ferret, but when the others started picking back at him, he found he wasn't as brave as he had made himself out to be.

We ended up having a new Helicobactor test run on Charlie and it came back with an elevated level. As of this writing, our 8 ferrets are on a 3 medication twice a day regimen. Yee Haa Memories of ECE pop in my head, but this is definitely much easier to deal with.

While dealing with the Helicobactor issue at the vet, Kellie told me of a girl that had been dumped at another location of that national petstore chain. She's 2 years old and was adrenal. The store agreed to pay for her bilateral adrenalectomy! She also had a "histo" on an enlarged lymph node. The node was removed. My vet contacted the store or corporate, I'm not sure which, and corporate said they'd pay to have it tested. The girl then needed a home. Guess where she came?  LOL Yes, Bailey found her forever home with us.

We're now  fostering Kellie's two ferrets, Noah and Simon. They are a couple of cuties! We've never fostered before. I'm excited to help Kellie out and to take care of her ferrets until she can get on her feet. Fostering ferrets is somewhat like fostering human children. We'll provide the daily living requirements for Simon and Noah and Kellie will provide medical care. Our agreement is that she can visit whenever she wants. She has also offered to put money on our account at the vet if she has extra. The hard part will be when she takes her boys home again, but I feel in my heart that helping her is the right thing to do, so while I know we'll miss her boys when the time comes, we'll be happy that she has her babies with her again.  She's even offered to help clean the ferret room and pet sit if we need her to!
Because Noah and Simon were spending Kellie's working hours at the vet, Dr. L suggested that they, too, be treated for helicobactor. We're now treating all the ferrets here for helicobactor. So now I'm using 33 syringes to give 3 different medications orally to each ferret.

I had to come up with a system to keep each ferrets' medications straight and to make sure each one got his or her meds. You can read about my system on the Medicating Multiple Ferrets with Multiple Medications page on this website. Apparently Ferrets Magazine thinks my idea is good enough to publish as they published my article in the Jan/Feb 2005 issue of their magazine. :~)

Eddie and Clark
How our ferrets' got their names

Our first 2 busynesses of ferrets' names have come from a couple of our favorite movies. Froderick, Igor, Hans, Darwin, Helga, Elizabeth, Inga, Ab,  Madelyn, and Freddie came from Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein. Freddie is the only who kept the name he had when he came to us. I did change the spelling.

Clark, Eddie, Rusty, Audrey, and Gracie came from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Gracie also kept the name she had when she came to us, and like Freddie, I changed the spelling.

There is no theme for the latest additions. These will be the only additions for another 3-4 years. (Shut up! I know how ferret math works! ROTFL) Jessie kept the name she had before us because it fits her so well and Charlie got his name because it just kept popping into my head when I would look at him and search for a name for him.

Haha When I wrote the above, I really wasn't planning on bringing anymore ferrets into our home for years, but then Bailey needed a home and I wasn't sure we were going to keep her. You can read about that in my Journal. Anyway, the new theme is the alphabet, sorta. Bailey got her name because it was the only name beginning with "B" that I liked and thought fit her.

We're not doing the alphabet theme, although I tried. We've since added two more to the busyness - Phoebe and Tasha. Gregg picked those names and they seem to fit the girls really well.

The ferrets we're fostering are, of course, keeping the names their ferret Mommy gave them... Noah and Simon.
Levitation....that explains how your ferret gets to places you'd never dream it could.
