When we'd gotten the parakeets, I had wanted finches instead. Gregg wanted the parakeets so I gave in and that is what we got.
My vet always has finches in the clinic in need of homes. I've been watching them for quite a while and still wanted some. I brought home 3 on May 18, 2006. :-)
I was only able to get 2 of them in the first picture and almost got all the 3 of them in the second one.

On July 29th, I brought home two females. Then either two weeks or four weeks later I brought home another female We had eggs October 1st. Four of them! Three hatched on or about October 18th. As of this writing (Thanksgiving Day) the fledglings still don't have all of their adult coloring, but it looks like there may be two females and one male. If I can't find a home for them, I'll take them to clinic to be rehomed from there.
December 2, 2006, I took the young adults to the vet to be rehomed. As it turned out we had three males. Two of them passed away almost as soon as I put them in the cage at the clinic. We figure they passed from stress because there were two older adult males in the cage already. The older adults didn't appear to be bothering the finches I'd taken in, but stress is the only thing we could come up with since they had been perfectly fine here and on the way to the clinic. The other male is doing well. I brought the boys bodies home and they'll be buried with Freddie and Powder (ferrets) next Spring.

The Saturday after Valentine's Day 2007, I was at our exotic vet clinic. There was what appears to be a Carolina Dingo at the clinic needing a home. I talked to the staff about her and considered bringing her home. She was found in our vet's barn as a pup. She kept her until she was old enough to spay, did that, updated her vaccinations and then found a home for her. The guy who took her ended up not being able to keep her so back to the clinic she went, hence why she was there. She was very sweet! Laid her head on my lap and gave me sweet looks and finally ended up on my lap, nuzzling into my neck. Another lady there said she'd like to take her home and give her a try and she did. I stated that IF the dog came back, I'd take her to see if she would fit into our home. A few days after taking this dog, the lady called and said she wasn't a good fit for her home. I picked Bindi up the next Saturday and she's been with us ever since. Our vet believes she was about 11 months old when she came to live with us.

Madison loves having a buddie to romp with and they both love the newly fenced in back yard since they no longer have to be taken out on leashes.
While Madison is definetely Gregg's dog, Bindi is definitely my dog.

Again while at the exotic animal clinic I came home with more pets. This time (on July 7, 2007) I brought home a pair of European Goldfinches. They're really cool looking! The local exotic rescue had gotten them in from someone who had no intention of keeping them, but took them from what the person said was poor conditions. The birds look pretty scraggly and have some features that the vet and rescue operator believe are due to poor diet. I'm hoping they'll get to looking like the beauties they should be with an improved diet and better conditions. I'd really like to house them with the zebra finches, but that remains to be seen. They're currently in the cage they came to the rescue in. Luckily that cage is a decent size - it will be a matter of finding a place for it if they don't fit with the other finches.
Their song is quite different from the zebra finches. It's very soft and pretty.

Sidebar: Madison's picture was chosen as "The Big Sweetie of the Week" by Laura Steele and her dog Jagger in December 2006. A screen print of Laura's page appears in my Journal dated 12/30/2006. Laura is a DJ at radio station Q95 - also home of The Bob and Tom Show.
