Trapper John,M.D. was a popular Medical Drama/ Comedy that aired on CBS
from 1979-1987. It followed Trapper John McIntyre, a former Army surgeon,
now head of surgery at a San Francisco Hospital. Trapper puts Gonzo, a brilliant
young surgeon on staff. Unlike Trapper, Gonzo is contstantly pulling
pranks on the other doctors. Also on staff were Dr.Stanley Riverside,
who was only hired because his dad already worked at the Hospital.
Nurse Gloria Brancusi, Jackpot Jones and Startch, who Trapper
had known in the army. Startch's character retired in the 1980 season
(actress Mary McCarty had passed away) and Ernestine replaced her.
Stanley was also married to
a female Dentist named EJ in 1983. Many strange events occured
in the Hospital throughout the series. Monsters,Vampires,Ghosts,Curses,
a Robot Nurse, Satanic cults, a patient who thinks he is an alien,
and even a supposed visit from God (in the first episode)
all bothered the surgeons on staff,
but none were as bad as Trapper's Ex-wife Melanie.
Melanie constantly bothered Trapper and Gonzo. Trapper married her
after he returned home from the Korean war. They had two children,
one of them, Trapper's son J.T, joined the cast in the 1984 season.
In the final season Lorna Luft, (Judy Garland's daughter) joined the cast.
During the 1986-1987 season, dramatic and sad events occured to
the staff of San Francisco Memorial, the characters final fates
would be revealed. Trapper John,M.D. is not your
average Medical Drama/Comedy. It was the first show to
deal with Aids or Cancer. Also the first, any probubly only Medical
Drama to have strange visits from the supernatural on many
ocassions.Trapper John was a very exciting series. The terrific mix between Drama and Comedy,
a wonderful cast and terrific plots kept the show on the air for nearly 7 years.
