It's as though
you were someone I dreamed,
not real till the proof of this paper:
this date, this day,
am's and boxes
circled and xed;
the seconds to first breath,
your first cry
the cord cut
then tied.
I hug this cold paper to my breast;
Circles blur with hot milk,
unsuckled.

Circuit Court published records
even I was allowed to see,
three thousand nine hundred eighty-six
adoptive families on microfilm
one of them Sara's.
Saturdays, I rode the train to the Loop
twenty-five minutes of neon signs
and painted lines of advertising,
where and what to buy rushing past
too fast for me to find.
All week
I imagined the records gone
hidden away behind bars
like massive lead pipes
caging me in
locking Sara out.
I copied months of names
dated every page
checked every date
counted every case
kept the oversized paper close
in folders labeled
PETITIONS.
